CLERMONT TOWN NEWS

From the Principal’s DeskOn behalf of the Clermont Lions Club,

Town Councillor Nancy Baxter (also a Lions Club member) invites area residents and businesses to participate in the upcoming Clermont Festival on September 15.The festival will consist of a parade

through town at 11 a.m., vendors with booths and activities at the Lions Club Park at noon, and the annual Clermont Rodeo at 7:30 p.m.

PARADE FLOATS, ENTRIES

If you want to be in the parade, there is no cost, but you do need to register. Visit the Town of Clermont’s website to download the form, and then submit it to Nancy. Groups and individuals are encouraged to build their own floats to show off their creativity and restore the competitive spirit the parade historically has had among the float entrants. Besides a float, possible ideas for parade entries could be show cars, antique tractors, dance teams, horses, music groups, and members of your local business or organization passing out free goodies.

VENDORS, ACTIVITIES

Space for vendors is available for $30, and electricity can be had for an additional fee (limited availability). Food vendors are welcome, as are those wanting to sell arts and crafts, antiques, services, and so on. More information on setting up a booth is available at the Town of Clermont’s website, and there is a contract there for you to download and submit to Nancy. If you or your group would like to perform or host games or activities, contact Nancy at [email protected] or 317-833-2435.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Volunteers are still needed to help run the parade and make sure the time at the park goes smoothly. The next meeting for volunteers will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at Lions Club Park.

Festival Prep Now Underway

Recently, we have concluded a wonderfully successful 2017-18 school year at Robey Elementary, and we know that the accomplishments we enjoyed are a direct reflection of the positive relationships we have between our staff, students, families, and community partners.Among a few of the highlights

of the year were earning a school letter grade of an "A" based on our ISTEP performance and growth as well as being recognized as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) certified school by the Department of Education. We are one of only 18 elementaries in the entire state with this designation, and the MSD of Wayne Township has more STEM certified schools than any district

in Indiana. Ensuring our students are prepared for their junior high and high school experiences, as well as the challenging careers that lie ahead of them, will continue to be a major focus for us.We are so thankful for the

many ways that our community and families support our school through HOSTS mentoring, volunteering at events, donating supplies, and holiday assistance programs. Our school would not experience success without the amazing community that surrounds us. The new school year begins on

July 26, and we look forward to another year of growth and improvement for our students. We are also excited to welcome the new families of the Tansel Creek subdivision who will be joining the Robey and Clermont community. Go Rockets!

This spring, local girl scout Jacy Earle (Troop 2795) constructed and donated two park benches and a little library to the Town of Clermont. They have been placed in Miller Park on Tansel Road for you to enjoy. Jacy has been nominated for a Girl Scout Silver Award for this project, and the town thanks her for the gifts.

New Non-Emergency NumberIn Marion County, cell phone

users can now call 311 for non-emergencies instead of 317-327-

3811 (landlines should still call this number). The goal is to help ease 911 phone line congestion.

Representing Clermont as your City-County Councillor is an honor. I also enjoy participating with your Town Board on various projects, both work and fun, to help improve Clermont. One project that has always

been special to me, not only in Clermont, but throughout District 6 is "The Great Indy Cleanup." I want to thank everyone who has participated in helping to keep our area clean—either by picking up trash along our streets and roads, cleaning and working in the parks, or other projects in the right-of-way. For everyone’s information

30th Street between Tansel and Raceway is on the resurfacing list for this year. I have had this on

my list for several years and am glad that this improvement will be happening. Most of you have received a

yellow card that tells about my next Town Hall Meeting. In case you did not, it will be on Monday, June 25, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan Community Center at 2950 North High School Road. Dr. Virginia Caine from our Marion County Public Health Department will be the guest speaker. She will be presenting information about the proposed Needle Exchange Program for Marion County. Message From Your City-County Councillor

Keeping Clermont Beautiful

Wish your town a happy birthday on July 11 as it turns 115 years old!The Town of Clermont was incorporated

in 1903 after the Marion County Board of Commissioners was petitioned to hold an election. The election took place on July 7, 1903, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Merritt McConaha’s barber shop. Twenty-four ballots were cast for incorporation, and 19 were cast against, leaving a majority of 5 in favor of Clermont becoming a town. Four days later, the county commissioners declared the territory a new town. The first town officials (elected

afterward) were James M. Robey, Muratt Brown, Vincent K. Johnson (trustees), Lee R. Appleget (clerk), John T. Jones (treasurer), and Bert L. Appleget (marshal).

Clermont Turns 115 on July 11

What makes a place like Clermont an attractive community to live and do business in? While the answer to that is certainly multi-faceted, a key factor is keeping properties clean. One of the most important things

that town residents and businesses can do to help keep Clermont a safe, healthy, and beautiful place to live and do business is to prevent litter accumulation on your property. According to Keep America Beautiful Inc., people are much more likely to litter at a dirty or already-littered location than a clean one. And the vast majority of littering (80%) is done on purpose. So simply by picking up trash that

finds its way into your driveway or the easement in front of your house or business can make a big difference in the life of our community.Whether you plan to stay in

Clermont for decades or are

considering moving in the near future, cleaning up the trash on the ground where you work or live can help improve your property values when you go to sell. Potential buyers notice when you (or your neighbors) aren’t taking care of the property. As we enter summertime, more

residents are out and about walking the community. By keeping your

corner of Clermont litter-free, you help set a community standard and promote personal

responsibility among your neighbors. If you want good neighbors, you should be a good neighbor. What easier way to show you care than to pick up the paper, plastic, cigarette butts, and other miscellaneous stuff that ends up right where you go in and out every day. Who would complain about neighbors keeping their property too clean? Probably no one.

If you’re passionate about keeping your neighborhood a good place to live, in addition to taking care of your property and the easement in front of it, please consider becoming part of a local volunteer group. Town Councillor and Main Street Coordinator Nancy Baxter is looking to organize like-minded individuals to patrol their streets and pick up trash on an ongoing basis. Contact her at 317-833-2435 or [email protected]. If you’re really passionate, you

can become an Adopt-A-Block captain in conjunction with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, a local nonprofit dedicated to doing just what its name says. KIB’s Adopt-A-Block program has engaged and empowered thousands of neighbors to beautify and revitalize their neighborhoods by keeping their blocks clean. KIB offers free help—like gloves, trash bags, and brooms—to get you started. Go online to kibi.org to learn more and sign up to be a block captain. Businesses and schools can join too.

Another way to make a difference is to plant trees on your property!

You can also apply for a community tree planting from Keep Indianapolis

Beautiful. Just go to kibi.org and apply before July 6 for a planting in 2019.
