Warren Olsen Chief Executive Officer

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER The Shire of Mount Magnet has recently received a grant from Tourism WA to get accreditation for the Mount Magnet Visitors Centre, develop a proper five-year business plan, install a proper visitor centre website with online shopping and book-ing facilities, and to make other improvements to enhance the sustainability of the Visitors Centre.

If we play our cards right, this represents opportunities far beyond the Visitors Centre and should impact on tourism in Mount Magnet more broadly and also the Murchison region generally. The business plan should integrate with the proposed Murchison Geotourism development project as proposed by the Mid West Development Commission and supported by all the local governments of the region through the Gascoyne-Murchison Tourism Development Strategy and the associated memorandum of understanding. It should integrate also with local and regional events such as the 2016 Astro Rocks Fest that is to be held this coming May. It also represents an opportunity for all tourism-related businesses in the Shire (both existing and potential start-ups) to walk forward together. The Shire will certainly be taking the opportunity to get the Mount Magnet Caravan Park ac-credited as well as the Visitors Centre. We are engaging Dr John Gates to manage the accreditation and to prepare the business plan (and to assist with the other aspects of the project). He will be visiting Mount Magnet in early March to meet stakeholders and gather informa-tion. There will be a public forum on the evening of Tuesday 8 March to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to meet, learn more about the project (and the importance of tourism accreditation), to express their aspirations, ideas (and possibly their frustrations), and have an exchange of information in relation to the project and in relation to tourism in the Shire and the region more gener-ally. I encourage all tourism operators, people who may be interested in starting a new tourism enterprise, and everyone else with an interest in tourism in Mount Magnet to make the effort to attend this forum.

RAMELIUS RESOURCES COMMUNITY BENEFIT FUND The Shire of Mount Magnet has an agreement with Mt Magnet Gold Pty Ltd that that company will make a series of community benefit payments to the Shire over a three year period, and the Shire will establish a fund known as the Ramelius Resources Community Benefit Fund. The purpose of the fund is to provide funding for worthwhile community programs and/or community infrastructure on application from bona fide Mount Magnet community groups. These grants are available to local members of the Mount Magnet community who need money to assist with projects that will benefit the community. Projects should provide long term benefits to the community and involve local participation (volunteers). Projects may be jointly funded (that is money may come from other organisations, grants or fundraising).

Community Benefit Fund Application Forms are available at the Shire Administration Office or online at http://www.mtmagnet.wa.gov.au/pages/94-community-benefit-fund Applications close Monday, 29 February 2016

1080 BAITING STATIONS

Mt Magnet Gold Pty Ltd (MMG) would like to advise the community of Mount Magnet of their intention to continue with the use of 1080 poison oats for the control of rabbits on rehabilitated areas on MMG Mining Leases. Bait-ing stations have been installed within fenced and signposted areas. Baiting will continue until the 30th of April 2016.

Please be advised that 1080 is highly toxic, the consumption of an animal that has ingested a lethal or sub-lethal dose of 1080 poses a serious risk of secon-dary poisoning to humans and animals. Access to MMG Mining Leases is re-stricted at all times, please ensure you do not enter these areas without au-thorisation from Mt Magnet Gold. The hunting or trapping of animals or re-moval of hides or carcasses on MMG Mining Leases is prohibited and MMG recommends pets and stock be restrained from entering baiting areas.

If you would like further information about this baiting program please con-tact MMG’s Senior Environment Coordinator Dolly Pett, or Environmental Officer Jareth Howard, on 0417 069 828. Alternatively you can speak to a Biosecurity Officer at the Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA). More information about the use of 1080 is available from DAF-WA’a website: www.agric.wa.gov.au

On behalf of Councillors and Officers at the Shire of Mount Magnet we would like to con-gratulate the Sisters of the Good Samaritan for 30 years of service to our Community. We express our gratitude of the Sisters' contribution to the community life in the Shire of Mount Magnet. Apart from station visits, to support families there, they have always been very involved in town and for benefit of the people here. Many organisations and people have been supported in some way. Four Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict arrived in Mount Magnet on 4th March 1986. This year marks 30 years of their presence in our community. Since this time, some sixteen Sisters have lived and worked in Mount Magnet and surround-ing region - being valuable members of and for our community in many ways, including "being neighbour".

Hello Everyone. Happy New Year everyone. The Festive Season and New Year were another very busy period for us and criminals, in town. Burglaries were the high priority incidents, which we dealt with along with alco-hol related anti-social behaviour. Those on School Holidays were dealt with for several of the burglaries and some of the stolen property stolen was recovered. A Majority of the Burglaries were on houses, when people were away from town. We hold a Register for houses unoccupied for any period of time and do as many security checks and patrols, as we can when time permits. We ask if you are leaving town for any length of time, please let us know, by phone or in person at the office, so we can check and patrol your house. Also please let someone you trust in town know and maybe leave a spare key with them, so they can do the same thing. We have access to UV Pens, for members of the community who wish to mark property which is important to them. The UV Pens can’t be seen under normal light and can only be read using a UV Light, which we have. If you wish to do this, crime prevention packs are available from the office, be-tween 8.30am and 11.30am, Monday to Friday. We completed a small search for members of the community who went out bush and didn’t return. We want to again thank those who helped us in search. If you go out bush for any activity, please let your family know where you are going, when you are coming back and what water and food you are taking with you. It helps us to know, if we have to go looking for you. It’s been very hot recently and hope that everyone is keeping cool and drinking a lot of water. If you don’t feel well during this hot period, please see our people at the Nursing Post and GRAMS. Stay safe and have a good month. Matt FOGARTY. Sergeant – Officer in Charge. Mount Magnet Police Station.
