But I wasn’t sure where to start until I stepped into the world of FAWCO. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Many young people in this world suffer from a lack of self-esteem, but so do many adults. Once we learn to believe in ourselves—we can begin to help others. Start small, dream big. It’s important to focus on celebrating your strengths. If you identify your strengths, you can use your talent and resources to help build a fair and sustainable world, close to home and abroad. Giving to others is not a chore. If you do what you love and do it for a good cause, you can help others and feel really great about yourself. Empower yourself with the 4 C’s: Be COMPASSIONATE! : Don’t look away—be aware of the world around you. Be COURAGEOUS! Be brave enough to take the first step. Be CURIOUS! Seek out ways you can help. And COLLABORATE! Find others who share your passion and desire to help. This is what FAWCO is all about. FAWCO Youth Ambassador Julia Goldsby FAWCO Board 2015 -2017

Jul’s Journey: My Year as FAWCO Youth Ambassador Guest Speaker Julia Goldsby, FAWCO Youth Ambassador

I’ve grown up knowing that it is important to help others, to be socially aware of what is going on in the world around me, to volunteer and assist people who need help. But I wasn’t sure where to start until I stepped into the world of FAWCO. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Many young people in this world suffer from a lack of self-esteem, but so do many adults. Empower yourself with the 4 C’s:

• Be COMPASSIONATE! : Don’t look away—be aware of the world around you. • Be COURAGEOUS! Be brave enough to take the first step. • Be CURIOUS! Seek out ways you can help. • And COLLABORATE! Find others who share your passion and desire to help.

This is what FAWCO is all about.

Eternal Fashion: An Italian Perspective 1945 – Present The panel Eternal Fashion: An Italian Perspective was born out of a desire to share the incredible artistic heritage of Rome, in the area of costume, jewelry and fashion design. On Saturday, 28 March 55 FAWCO members, AWAR volunteers and area students from high schools and universities heard the perspectives of leading houses and family businesses that have defined Italian fashion for more than a century, as they shared highlights in words and visual images of their legacies, their current projects, and future aspirations.

Moderated by Fashion & Costume Designer Alessandra Carta, guests included Lupo Lanzara and Adrien Roberts of the Accademia di Costume e di Moda, Simone Bessi of Annamode, Maria Cristina Giusti of Fondazione Micol Fontana, Carla Granieri and Monica Brannetti of Bulgari.

The vision of Lupo Lanzara’s grandmother, Rosana Pistolese, muse, fashion designer and founder of the Accademia, was echoed through a series of slides showing students’ final collections, the extensive and world-renown archive (including the full catalog of Harper’s Bazaars going back to the magazine’s founding in 1867) and the illustrious alumni and professional network of the institution. The Accademia is the only one of its kind that offers a Costume & Fashion Design program together in the same degree program. He also highlighted the Accademia’s new English-language fashion program, its aim to attract a new pool of talent to the Eternal City.

Annamode is Simone Bessi’s family business. Founded by his grandmother and continued by his aunt, he is now at the helm. As CEO of the atelier and President of the Annamode Foundation, purveyor of costumes for films and theater, their warehouse in Formello is full of costume history. He made a unique tribute to his grandmother by showing the audience a trailer of the new Cinderella movie (for which Annamode is providing some of the costumes).

In a video interview, 101-year-old Micol Fontana shared the journey of Sorelle Fontana, Rome's celebrated fashion designers and sisters, who began as young girls in tailoring shop near Parma and set up an atelier in 1936 in Rome. Their fame reached an international scale with the rise of American filmmaking in Italy. Thanks to the Tyron Powers/Linda Christian wedding and the paparazzi surrounding Ava Gardner, Sorelle Fontana became a worldwide name. Ava Gardner, Liz Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Grace of Monaco, Soraya, Maria Gabriella di Savoia and Jacqueline Kennedy are just some of the many icons who have worn their dresses.

In 1994, The Micol Fontana Foundation was established to house its important collection of haute couture creations, designs, fabrics and photographic material to be shared with the public. Maria Cristina described how the Foundation promotes new fashion talents with scholarships. It host fashion and conservation workshops. In addition, the foundation collaborates with Bulgari for conservation and restoration.

Carla Granieri and Monica Brannetti’s shared presentation included a look back through Bulgari’s archives to see the dynamic relationship between jewelry, screen sirens and aristocrats. Film stills, candid video and famous photographs captured the decades through the eyes of Bulgari beginning in the 1940s up to the present. Carla highlighted Bulgari’s exhibitions and branding.
