CLASS OBSERVATION
Teacher: Bruna Class: Intermediate II - Monday
Observer: Matheus Date: 09 June 14
The class focused on the first and second units of Lesson 11.
Positive points:- The interaction between the teacher and the students is outstanding. They seem to
enjoy the classes a lot and are highly participative. The teacher also proved to know the
students really well, thus being able to help the weaker ones and identify their needs. She
was able to give special attention to them and make sure they had understood what was
being taught.
- The teacher spoke almost only in English with the students and incentivised them to
do the same. She would not answer a question when it was made in Portuguese, tellingthe students to ask in English.
Points to be improved:
- The Teacher Talking Time during this class was 45%, which is considerably more than
the desirable percentage. The use of more pair activities and speaking tasks would help to
improve this. The students worked too much individually and doing things that they would
be able to do in pairs.
- The class could have been prepared in a way that would provide the students with
more opportunities to practise their English. The book activities, for example, can be
adapted to fit the group better, putting their willingness to talk to one another to good use.
In addition to this, some activities, such as writing sentences, can be assigned as
homework in order to maximise the Student Talking Time.
- The teacher can improve her grammar explanation. It is not necessary to pass all the
explanation on the board, given that the students have it on their books in case they need
to check it later. What needs to be improved is the use of examples and the way it is
explained, and moreover, the use of grammar in context by the students, which enables

them not only to understand how to use it, but also to memorise it better.
- The students in general seem not to produce the necessary amount of relevant
spoken language, giving answers that are too short. They do ask a lot of questions,
especially about words that they do not know, but the quality of their speaking can be
improved. The teacher needs to think of possible solutions to this situation. An alternativewould be the use of questions and examples that would spark their interest and generate
longer stretches of language. However, this point deserves further analysis, which I will
carry out in due course.
When it comes to her English command, the teacher demonstrated an excellent
knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, being able to answer the students’ questions and
make them understand the grammar properly. She has some pronunciation mistakes, butthey are not so relevant to be worried about.
