Welcome to a new season of Arts in Your Neighbourhood. From 9-26 March, let your imagination take flight with an engaging

theatrical performance of puppets, larger-than-life characters, and surprises a-plenty for the entire family. Create your own

soundtracks at a unique installation inspired by the everyday sounds in the neighbourhood and be mesmerised by the splendour of Malay

traditional music in a two-hour music extravaganza.

This season, we travel to the northern part of Singapore torediscover the neighbourhood of Yishun. Follow the trail of the

musicians in Arts Imprints Around My Neighbourhood as they uncoverthe story of Yishun through pop-up performances at familiar landmarks and watch an immersive dance performance, District 27, taking place

at and around the hawker centre and shops.

With an extensive line-up of more than 30 arts activities spanning over 12 locations, there will be something for everyone this March.

A captivating story for all in the family! Grab a seat in a spotted beetle and get swept away in a magical, fun-filled journey where the imagination takes flight of puppets, larger-than-life characters, music and surprises a-plenty. That’s not all! wander through specially crafted Curious Houses and have fun bonding over parent-and-child craft activities.

Following two successful runs in Toa Payoh and Bedok, journey with us on this third and final musical trail around the Yishun neighbourhood.

Starting from either Chong Pang Amphitheatre or Yishun Neighbourhood Park, follow the footsteps of the musicians to uncover the story of Yishun, one of the oldest estates in Singapore. Expect a fun-filled experience from pop-up music performances to learning simple drumming techniques and ending on a high note with a special finale concert at GV Yishun cinema! Whether you are a child, parents, grandparents, or someone looking to explore the arts in your neighbourhood, this will be an immersive musical experience to rediscover Yishun.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Quek Ling Kiong is the Resident Conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) and Music Director of the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO). Recipient of the National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award in 2002, Ling Kiong is committed to spreading his passion and knowledge of music to budding young musicians.

紧接上两次圆满完成的大巴窑和勿洛邻里音乐兜游,这次我们将音乐的步履带到终点站义顺区!

观众(或称“乐游者”)将从忠邦中心剧场或义顺公园出发,跟着 演奏家们游览新加坡早期的邻里之一–义顺,一起回顾昔日和今日的 故事。“乐游者”届时能尝试玩奏乐器,连同演奏家们在义顺具独特色的义顺嘉华院线戏院,来一场前所未有的音乐环节大合奏!

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Angie Seah's multidisciplinary practice traverses the mediums of drawing, installation, performance and sound to respond to the human condition in relation to the social environment. For a decade, she has been active in initiating art projects and participatory workshops with various communities. Since 2000, Angie has presented her works both locally and internationally.

Whisper to a Roar by Angie Seah

Inspired by the everyday sounds of living in an HDB flat, this sound installation draws on the voices, music and sounds from the surroundings such as conversations at void deck or frying of the carrot cake at the hawker centre.

Visitors are invited to select their own favourite everyday sounds to create a symphony of their neighbourhood.

In the third and final instalment of The Real Estates, artist Jean Loo and her team of photographers draw inspiration and uncover the unique sights, sounds and stories from the Yishun neighbourhood.

Visit the installation featuring a rich visual tapestry of photographs that showcases familiar sights and scenes in everyday Yishun and pen down what the neighbourhood means to you.

You can contribute to the installation too (no prior experience needed) by joining us on any of the guided photo walks around Yishun. Be thoroughly entertained as our guides regale you with historical insights and bring to light an intriguing mix of the familiar and the forgotten.

Wow! Wayangby Sri Warisan

Relive the good old kampong days through this traditional shadow play performance, accompanied by live gamelan music, as stories come to life on a larger-than-life jumbo screen.

From traditional folktales of princes and their adventures to modern day superhero characters, watch closely as these stories unfold through puppetry and the juxtaposition of traditional and modern presentation. Audiences will have a chance to try out the different Wayang Kulit puppets during the performance.

Xinyao Music & Movie Night by The Filmic Eye

Reminisce one of Singapore’s unique cultural phenomena – the Xinyao movement in the 1980s and early 1990s through film director Eva Tang’s acclaimed documentary The Songs We Sang. Follow the Xinyao journey and share the tears and joy, the friendship and passion of a group of our homegrown music makers. Be sure to catch pre-screening music performance by Tong Yek Suan and Tristan Ong from ETC Music who will perform a selection of the most popular Xinyao songs.

The screening at Our Tampines Hub will include a post-show dialogue with the film director.

Programme is in Mandarin with English subtitles.
