Example #1:  Finding Least Common Multiples

Find the least common multiple of 4x2 ­ 36 and 6x2 + 36x + 54.

Step 1  Find the prime factors of each expression.

4x2 ­ 36 = 4(x2 ­ 9) = 2(2)(x ­ 3)(x + 3)

6x2 + 36x + 54 = 6(x2 + 6x + 9) = 2(3)(x + 3)(x + 3)

Step 2  Write each prime factor the greatest number of times it appears in either expression.  Simplify where possible.

(2)(2)(3)(x ­ 3)(x + 3)(x + 3) = 12(x ­ 3)(x + 3)2

The least common multiple is 12(x ­ 3)(x + 3)2.
