Minister of Infrastructure Development at UAE Government His Excellency Dr. Eng. Abdullah Al-Nuaimi joined the Federal Government in 2013 as Minister of Infrastructure Development, which is responsible for developing the infrastructure of the federal state road networks and federal buildings (schools, hospitals, government buildings, research centers, cultural and sports centers, police stations and civil defense, housing for the citizens, and other governmental projects). Beside his responsibilities as a Minister, Dr. Eng. Abdulla Al-Nuaimi is Chairman of Sheikh Zayed Housing Program and also a Chairman of Federal Transport Authority.

Dr. Chih-Ping Lin is a Distinguished Professor and the Chair in the Department of Civil Engineering at the National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. He received his MS in Civil Engineering (1996), MS in Electrical & Computer Engineering (1998), and Ph.D. (1999) degrees from Purdue University. His primary research interests are engineering monitoring based on electromagnetic waveguide and engineering geophysics. He received the ASTM Hogentogler Award in 2008 and served on the board of the Environmental & Engineering Geophysical Society from 2010 to 2013.

Dr. Lee Slater, Distinguished Professor and Henry Rutgers Professor in Geophysics at Rutgers University Newark, is an internationally recognized expert in hydrogeophysics. He has published extensively, including 145 papers in peer reviewed international journals of hydrogeology and geophysics. Dr. Slater has served as principal investigator on multiple research and technology demonstration projects funded by the US Department of Defense, US Department of Energy, US Department of Agriculture, US National Parks Service and National Science Foundation. He has also served in prominent

leadership roles in the academic geophysical community, including Chair of the Near Surface Geophysics Focus Group of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), Chair of the AGU Hydrogeophysics Technical Committee, and President of the Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society (EEGS). Dr. Slater currently serves as Associate Editor of Water Resources Research (WRR) and he recently edited a new volume on Near Surface Geophysics published in the 2nd Edition of the Treatise on Geophysics, part of the Elsevier Major International Reference series. Dr. Slater has served on multiple advisory boards for large interdisciplinary hydrogeological research projects in Europe. His numerous PhD graduates have mostly gone onto academic positions and are now making their own contributions to advancing research in hydrogeophysics.

Prof. Dr. Ugur Yaramanci (1950 Istanbul) graduated in geophysics at Clausthal University of Technology, Germany (1975) and received his PhD at University of Liverpool, Great Britain (1978). He was Assoc. Professor at Istanbul Technical University (1980-1986), scolar of Alexander Von Humboldt-Foundation at University of Kiel (1987), and a research associate at Research Centre for Environment and Health, Braunschweig (1987–1993). Later he was professor for petrophysics at Clausthal University of Technology (1993-1996), professor for applied geophysics at Berlin University of Technology (1996-2016) and

director of Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics, Hannover (2008-2016). His scientific fields are applied geophysics, rock physics, geoelectrics & electromagnetics and magnetic resonance. He is author of about 100 peer papers and about 20 peer projects. He contributed to EAGE as Chief-In-Editor of Near Surface Geophysics (2003-2015), to German Geophysical Society (president 2009-2011), and Academy of Geosciences and Geotechnologies, Hannover (president since 2016).

Xiaolin Hou, a professor at the Center for Nuclear Technologies, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Nutech), is a radiochemist with expertise in environmental radioactivity, radioecology and environmental radioanalytical chemistry. He has coordinated and actively participated in a number of research

projects funded by EU, Nordic Reserach Councils, Denmark and China. He has authored/coauthored more than 180 research articles in peer reviewed scientific

journals. Prof. Hou has supervised many MSc, PhD and postdocs. He is the associate editor of Journal of Environmental Radioactivity and Journal of

Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry, and committee member of Division of Nuclear and Radiochemistry of the EUCheMS and International Nuclear Chemistry Society (INCS) and was the chairman of the LSC-2017 conference.

Women in Geosciences (Journey from Student to Young professionals)

Moderator: Dr. Estella Atekwana received a B.S. and MS from Howard University, Washington, DC and a PhD from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She is currently the Dean, College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment at the University of Delaware. Before coming to Delaware she spent 11 years at Oklahoma State University as the Sun Chair Professor, Regents Professor, and Head of the Boone Pickens School of Geology. She was previously a professor at Missouri University of Science and Technology and Western Michigan University. Her research on geophysical studies of

geomicrobiology processes helped to pioneer the field of biogeophysics. She also has research interests in tectonophysics with particular attention to continental rifting. She has published over 100 papers and more than 200 presentations at national meetings. She has served on the executive committee of the American Geophysical Union, Board of Directors for the Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society, Committee of Special Merits, and Women’s Network Committee (Society of Exploration Geophysicists). She is a member of the American Geophysical Union, Geological Society of America, Society of Exploration Geophysicists, National Association of Black Geoscientists, European Association of Geoscientists, and Engineers, and Geochemical Society.

Bukki Balogun is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over sixteen years’ experience working on the geotechnical aspects of a wide range of projects such as near shore marine structures, highway roads, rails and bridges, tunnels, deep basements, and building schemes. She provides geotechnical advisory and technical supports for the design of marine works, foundations to bridges, structures and earthworks design. Her experience and capabilities include ground investigation planning, design, administration, procurement, supervision and interpretation including the production of factual and interpretative report, geotechnical analysis and design of geotechnical structures such as cutting and

embankment slopes, earth retaining and quay wall structures, undertaken Geotechnical Asset Management

Inspections for Motorways and Trunk roads, geotechnical analysis and design of geotechnical structures such as

cutting and embankment slopes, earth retaining structures, deep foundations and foundations to marine

structures, settlement analysis and Impact assessment to third party assets, preparation of specifications and

undertaking Finite Element Analysis to assess soil structure interaction.

Salma Al Hajeri is currently the Director Reservoir Engineering at Mubadala Petroleum. She is responsible for quality control, technical assurance, and standardization of Mubadala Petroleum’s reservoir engineering and subsurface studies related to the company’s operations in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Oman, and Qatar. Salma has been in the oil and gas industry for more than 16 years. She is the first UAE female to manage a key international project in Mubadala Petroleum’s South East Asia (SEA) assets. She was responsible for leading a multi-discipline team of subsurface technical practitioners in the

evaluation of the development options for commercializing a multi-trillion cubic feet off offshore gas discoveries made by Mubadala in 2013-2014.

Salwa Thani is a geologist in Geology and Mineral Resources Department in the Ministry of Energy. Graduated from United Arab Emirates University in 2015 with a bachelor degree in Petroleum Geology and a minor in Geographic information System. She joined the Ministry in June in 2016. She is member of GeoHummer student group and the Emirates Foundation.

Nadia Halawi holds a MSc Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of

Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, Sofia, Bulgaria. She started her career in

Bulgaria working in the area of control of environmental factors and microclimates in

living and working spaces. In 1993, Nadia joined ACES, one of the leading companies

in the UAE and Middle East for geotechnical investigations, materials testing,

geophysical studies, land and marine surveying, environmental sampling and testing, and special studies. Nadia joined ACES as an entry-level chemist and progressed

within the organization to the role she holds today, assistant branch manager of ACES Abu Dhabi. Throughout the past three decades, Nadia has contributed to the growth of ACES by focusing on technical and business development, quality management, and strategic planning. Eng. Nadia is lead auditor for ISO9001, ISO17025, as well as, senior assessor in the Sheikh Khalifa Excellence Award Abu Dhabi.

Best Practices in Near-Surface Geophysics

Moderator: Richard D. Miller (Rick) received a BA in physics from

Benedictine College, an MS in physics (emphasis geophysics) from the University of Kansas (KU), and a PhD in geophysics from the University of Leoben, Austria. Since 1983 he has been at the Kansas Geological Survey, a research and service division of KU, where he is senior scientist and courtesy associate professor of geology. His scientific interests focus on applying shallow-seismic methods to a wide assortment of problems from energy to engineering to the environment.

Ian Unsworth graduated in 1983 with B.Sc. (Hons) in Geology from Leicester University, UK. Since 1984 he has been working in the geophysical services industry with experience in the oilfield, environmental, groundwater, minerals, and engineering sectors. His first experience of working in the GCC area was in 1984 and he has been based in the area permanently since 1994 with work experience in Oman, UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain. He is a member of SEG, EAGE, SPWLA, and a Chartered Geologist with the Geological Society of London. Currently he is studying for an MSc in Hydrogeology.

Satar Hasan is a Geophysicist with more than 38 years of experience in the field of near surface geophysics. After graduation with a B.Sc. in geology/ geophysics in 1975, he worked at the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission for two years performing ground follow up radiometric surveys. In 1979 he obtained an M.Sc. degree in Applied Geophysics from Birmingham University in the UK and worked for four years as lecturer of Applied Geophysics in Libya and an additional four years in the UK in academia. Since 1989 he has been involved in Near Surface Geophysics Applications in the UK, Europe, India, Hong Kong, Africa, and the Middle East region. He joined Furgo Ltd. (UK) in 1993 as head of

the Geophysics Department and moved to Fugro Middle East in 2008 as regional manager of the onshore geophysics division.
