Lent 2017

I know. It just seems like we celebrated Christmas. But…it’s been 2 months! Lent begins this coming Wednesday with Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is NOT a holyday of obligation, but is a great way to begin the holy season in a commu-nal way. There will be 2 Masses at St. Vincent’s, at 8am(school Mass) and 6pm. There will be a Com-munion Service with distribution of ashes at 7pm at Immaculate Conception. A reminder that on Tuesdays during Lent, beginning next Tuesday, March 7 in addition to Adoration, Rosary, Mass, and Perpetual Help devotions, we add Stations of the Cross. We normally have a great crowd on Tuesdays as an awesome evening of communal prayer. Come

Preparing Before Lent Begins

Taking some time to get ready for Lent will ensure that we aren't going to miss the first week or two of Lent, because we are just getting started. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, but we want to be ready to really take off on that day, rather than just beginning to think about Lent on that day. Part of what makes a vacation or a special anniversary so special is the build-up to it.

Before we get to Ash Wednesday, we should start asking ourselves some questions and we should start with some preparations. "What does God want to give me this year?" This question may require that I slow down a bit and listen to my inner spirit. For exam-ple, even if I'm very busy, I realize I'm hungry when I hear my stomach start "growling." "What am I going to be doing on Ash Wednesday?" Too often, Ash Wednesday is like every other day, except that I manage to get to church and get ashes on my fore-head. Is there anything else I can do on Ash Wednesday? How will fasting and abstaining happen for me, for my family on that spe-cial day?

It doesn't a lot of time to prepare for the beginning of Lent. It just takes desire and focus. God can do so much with that. We can give God more of a space to touch our hearts if we begin to establish some simple patterns. We could wake up each morning, and for something like a half a minute to a minute, stand by the edge of our beds, and just ask the Lord for the grace to let this day be one in which I long for the beginning of Lent. Perhaps we need to ask for specific helps or graces to get ready to begin Lent. Whatever we try to say, our Lord can understand the Spirit trying to speak through our simple words. And all it takes is the time to find and put on our slippers. And each night, in the days ahead, we can practice giving thanks to God before I go to bed. This simple pattern, in the morning and evening can stir our spirits to look forward to and prepare for Lent, as a season of grace.

May our Lord bless us all on this journey ahead.

ARCHDIOCESAN LENTEN REGULATIONS

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eter-nal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:16-17)

The Church has always helped us fulfill these words of Jesus by prescribing very definite penance for all Catholics, so that we too might have Eternal life. Accordingly, the Pope and the American Bishops have outlined obligatory fast and abstinence as follows: Ash Wednesday (March 1, 2017) and Good Friday (April 14, 2017) are days of abstinence for all Catholics over the age of 14. On these two days, fast, as well as abstinence, is also obligatory for those from the ages of 18-59. Abstinence means refraining from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation.

All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again Catholics will not hold themselves lightly excused, but if there is a serious health problem, this obligation would not apply.

We should strive to make all days of Lent a time of prayer and penance. Following are several resources that can aid in finding dif-ferent forms of prayer and penance.

SV Stewardship Corner

Our “Window Saint” and our Steward-ship lesson for this week AND for Lent is the life of St. Isadore the Farmer. St. Isadore lived his daily life by the Christian adage:

“Holiness consists in the doing of common things uncommonly well.” As we enter a new Lenten season, we should use this time to do the daily-grind tasks of our daily life as well as we can and ask for God’s grace to turn them into holy works as Isadore did. This might be more pleasing to God than “giving something up” for Lent.

Born in 1070, he was a poor day-laborer on a farm outside Madrid, Spain. But every morning he attended Mass in the city before he made the long trip out to the fields. {Would we be able to attend Tuesday night Masses in addition to our Sunday obligation during Lent…and beyond?}

He married a good girl, Mary, who was also from a poor family. Their only child died in infancy, but they offered up their deep sorrow to Jesus, knowing that their son was happy with God forever. {Can we offer up any disappointments during our day to God, asking him for perseverance during Lent…and beyond?}

Isadore even spent his days off work praying in church and helping others who had even less than he. Once his parish had a dinner and Isadore brought in beggars. The parishioners were upset because they thought they’d run out of food. But, the more everyone filled their plates, the more there was for everyone else. Isadore said: “There is always enough for the poor of Jesus.” {Can we bring foods more frequently to our Stewardship Basket in our vestibule to help our local Food Pantries during Lent…and beyond?}

Let’s do our daily jobs, tasks, homework etc. as patiently, thoroughly and gratefully as we can and offer up our extra efforts to God asking him to use the graces from those efforts to ease the daily lives of those less fortunate during Lent…and beyond. (see bio on stewardship shelf in vestibule.)

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (material wealth).” (Matthew 6:24)

For many people, God and money run “the neck” as their first priority. Making money and spending money becomes center of their life and they actually become a slave to money. The solu-tion– become more generous. Giving money to Church and char-ity frees us from slavery to money and making money a “god” before God.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Generosity Could there be a more perfect Gospel for understanding generosity and the manner in which God provides for all of our needs? The heart of generosity is seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Mt. 6:33). We seek God and His righteousness by being generous with our time, re-sources, and gifts that He has given to us. Maybe we can give more money to the parish. Perhaps we can spend more quality time with our spouse and children and pray with them. All of us can spend more time with the Lord in prayer and do more to serve our brothers and sisters in need. God tends to our needs as a good Father and knows all of our needs before we even tell Him. Dur-ing this year when we focus on generosity, let us heed God’s words and trust in His unique way of being generous to us. He will never be outdone in generosity. As we hear in the prayer of St. Fran-cis of Assisi, “It is in giving that we receive.” archstl.org/dynamic

Fat Tuesday, as it is known in English, is a long-standing tradition of the Catholic Church and it marks the last day of ordinary time before the start of Lent, a time of fasting and repentance. While the parties in many parts of the world have gained the most attention in popular culture, they seriously misrepresent the Catholic intent of the holiday. Historically, different cultures celebrated the last day before Lent in their own ways, adapting the practices to suit their cultures. In France, the holiday became particularly popular as people feasted on foods that would be given up during the forty days of Lent. Meats, eggs, and milk were finished off in one day, giving the holiday its French title of 'Mardi Gras' which means Fat Tuesday. In other parts of the world, the holiday became a season unto itself each branded with unique cultural practices. For example, Venice, Italy is famous for the masked balls that take place on Mardi Gras and the days before. Still, the origi-nal intent of Mardi Gras has always been to indulge, within the context of Catholic morality and reason, the last day before the start of the Lenten season. While Lent is a season of self-sacrifice and repentance, it is not meant to be a period of self-punishment or extreme hardship. How are you preparing for Lent? What will you do to spiritually participate in the season?
