    Oliver twist

    Well! You have come here to be educated and taught a useful trade, said the red faced gentleman

    in the high chair.

    So youll begin to pick oakum tomorrow morning at six oclock, added the surly one in the white

    waistcoat.

    Oliver bowed low by the direction of the beadle, and was then hurried away to a large ward, where,

    on a rough, hard bed. He sobbed himself to sleep. What a noble illustration of the tender laws of

    England! They let the paupers go to sleep!

    Poor Oliver! He little thought, as he lay asleep in happy unconsciousness of all around him, that the

    board had that very day arrived at a decision which would exercise the most material influence over

    all his future fortune. But they had. And this was it:

    They contracted with the waterworks to lay on an unlimited supply of water, and with a corn-factor

    to supply periodically small quantities of oatmeal, and issued three meals a day of this thin gruel.

    With an onion twice a week and half a roll on Sunday.

    Resignation:

    He was still lying there when there was a noise outside. Someone shouted for him. His young

    daughter went out to look the office. At this moment his wife Sharda was scrubbing the utensils with

    ash before serving her husbands food. She told the girl: Ask him what is the matter? He is just back

    from the office. Why do they want him again?

    The messenger replied: The Shaib wants him. He says its very important.

    Lala Fateh Chands forty winks were disturbed. He raised his tired head from the charpoy and asked,

    Who is it?

    Its the Chaprasi from the office, said Sharda.

    The Chaprasi? Why, does the Sahib want me?

    Yes, he says he wants you urgently. What sort of man is Sahib of yours? He always seem to wantyou. Hasnt he had enough out of you all day? Tell him you cant come. The worst he can do is to

    take this wretched job from you. Let him!

    O Captain:

    O Captain! My Captain! Our fear trip is done,

    The ship has weatherd every rack, the price we sought is won,

    The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,

    While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;

    But O heart! Heart!O the bleeding drops of red,

    Where on the deck my captain lies,

    Fallen cold and dead.

    O Captain! My captain! Rise up and hear the bells;

    Rise up-for you the flag is flung-for you the bugle trills,

    For you bouquets and ribbond wreaths-for you the shores a-crowding,For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;

    I Saw:

    I saw a fishpond all on fire

    I saw a house bow to a squire

    I saw a parson twelve feet high

    I saw a cottage near the sky

    I saw a balloon made of lead

    I saw a coffin drop down dead

    I saw a sparrow run a raceI saw two horses making lace

    I saw a girl just like a cat

    I saw a kitten wear a hat

    I saw a man who saw these too,

    And says, though strange, they all are true.
