Y Dear Parents and Students
As we enter the season of Lent we seek to reflect deeply upon our lives and the way in which we choose to live. May we be people of compassion, love and service, who seek out possibilities, with open hearts and minds, to make a difference in all we do.
“All around are possibilities of doing good, and making the world richer for your having lived in it”. Mother Gonzaga Barry IBVM 1893 “Cultivate large‐mindedness; let there be nothing petty and narrow in your views, judgements and opinions”. Mother Gonzaga Barry IBVM 1897
May your pathway lead you closer to God. A pathway to the Chapel of “Our Lady of Mount Grace” in Osmotherley, Yorkshire. This was a special place of grace and prayer for Mary Ward. It is a place of ‘Holy Ground’. In 1642, after recovering from serious illness, Mary Ward walked up the hillside from Hutton Rudby to pray in the Mount Grace Chapel in thanksgiving for her renewed strength.
MARY WARD CONNECT This week twelve of our beautiful Year 10’s will travel as ambassadors from Loreto Coorparoo on exchange to Loreto Ballarat and Loreto Normanhurst in celebration of our heritage and our national Loreto story. At the same time, we will welcome visiting students and staff to Queensland from both of these Loreto schools in Victoria and New South Wales.
This exchange aims to strengthen our interstate Loreto connections and to deepen the students’ understanding of the Loreto story in Australia. It will be an exciting time for all Loreto schools around Australia this week as we share and rejoice together in what it is that makes Loreto schools so special. I will certainly be very keen and interested to hear the girls’ reflections at week’s end upon the experience.
Dear God, During this Lenten Season we give thanks for places of simplicity and peace. Let us find such a place within ourselves. We give thanks for places of refuge and beauty. Let us find such a place within our‐selves. We give thanks for places of nature’s truth and freedom, of joy, inspiration and renewal, places where all creatures may find acceptance and belonging. Let us search for these places: in the world, in ourselves and in others. Let us restore them. Let us strengthen and protect them and let us create them. May we mend this outer world according to the truth of our inner life and may our souls be shaped and nourished by nature’s eternal wisdom. Amen.
We wish the following young ambassadors safe travels and a wonderful time.

Hannah Wixted, Samantha Firrell, Brittany Ryan, Madeline Fisher, Courtney Milligan and Hannah Williams THANK YOU To the delightful Year 11 students who “hosted” so graciously on Sunday, at our annual enrolment interview morning. They were wonderful ambassadors for the College, representing themselves with pride and distinction. This followed an evening of celebration and fun for them at their Semi‐Formal last Friday evening. These young women were joyful, dignified and elegant. I commend them on their behaviour and their manners. It was a privilege to share the evening in their company. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY Today in our assembly we reflected upon the many improvements that have been achieved for women over the last 100 years and we sought to focus our continued efforts upon improvements we wish to see during the next 100 years. In many parts of the world today, girls and women are denied opportunities and pathways that lead to happy and fulfilling lives. Let us together work to improve the outcomes for all women everywhere as we seek to make a difference for good in our world.
Yours sincerely
Cheryl Hamilton Principal

Language News
Japanese ‐ We would like to extend a very warm welcome
to our guests from Kanagawa Gakuen in Yokohama, Japan who arrived at Loreto yesterday. The Japanese exchange students will spend their time in Brisbane learning English, assisting with Japanese classes and visiting places of interest. Many thanks to those families who are hosting the girls and to Mrs Hada‐Baxter for her excellent organisation. The visit‐ing Japanese students will be attending Loreto until Wednes‐day 16th March.
German ‐ Thanks also to those families who attended last
Monday’s meeting about the German exchange program at Loreto. Families who have indicated that they would like their daughters to travel to Germany at the end of the year are reminded that a non‐refundable deposit of $800 must be made by 8:30am Friday 11th March. Payment can be made by cash, credit card or cheque made payable to Loreto College. Cash or cheques should be handed to Mrs Bongaarts in the office or, if paying by credit card, please call Mrs Bongaarts
with the details. Louise Tilly ‐ Languages Coordinator
St Vincent de Paul News Our thanks to members of the Executive ‐ Flynn Hall, Kirsty Wrice, Sophia Markey‐Towler and Elise Fort ‐ who participated in the Rosies Street Outreach last Wednesday. They were a credit to the College in the way they interacted and helped those at Kemp Place in the Valley. Their job was to serve tea, coffee, milo and soup as well as to be good listeners for the homeless and the lonely. Thanks, members and well done! Next Friday morning some of our older members will be assisting at the Sumner Park St Vincent de Paul warehouse and shop.
Easter Eggs for the Elderly Loreto St Vincent de Paul is conducting its annual Easter egg collection. These will go the local elderly of the Holland Park Meals‐on‐Wheels. We have always found this activity to be very worthwhile. Each year the College receives letters of appreciation or phone calls praising our students and their kindness. Members will personally deliver the colourfully wrapped eggs. We need over 200 eggs but have very few at present. The collection box is in the office and is well marked. Students might like to give a gold coin as an alternative to buying the eggs. We should not forget that the egg is used as a Christian symbol of resurrection and renewal in line with the Easter message of hope and joy. The Loreto community has always been most generous with this collection. Thanks everyone.

Mathletics Mathletics is an interactive e‐Learning resource with the primary aim of improving Maths results. The College recognises the benefits of Mathletics for students and has paid for all Year 8 students and students of Years 9 and 10 Ordinary Mathematics to be registered users for 2011. Students in these classes will have been issued a username and password for accessing Mathletics. At the most, one lesson per week in school time can be devoted to Mathletics. Where possible, we encourage parents to promote using Mathletics at home in order to maximise the use of this valuable learning resource.

Music News Music Tour ‐ The due date for return of acceptance forms
and deposits was Monday this week. While I understand that this has come up very quickly, competition entries and plane and accommodation deposits are due this week so it is vital that we confirm all places urgently. Please return all forms immediately or contact Mr Langford at the Music Office to discuss any difficulties.
Queensland Symphony Orchestra Excursion ‐ All classroom music students in Years 9, 11 and 12 are attending tomorrow's Queensland Symphony Orchestra Concert. Students are to leave period 2 at 10:10 AM and meet in the Mary Ward Centre mezzanine with their morning tea. It is important that students DO NOT go to lockers at this time as classes will still be underway. Students who would like to leave any bags or books at school will be able to lock them in a music classroom. We will return during lunchtime and attend normal classes in the afternoon.
Congratulations to ‐ Ms Hartung and the members of
Chorale who performed at the wedding of former student Danielle Harrop and Villanova Old Boy Andrew Garton on Saturday. You represented our school with perfect behaviour and impressed with your musicality. Well done!
Ben Langford ‐ Director of Music
Zumba Zumba classes have started again for all interested students in the Mary Ward Centre at 6:45am until 7:45am on a Friday. The lessons will start this Friday 11th March. Cost is $5 per session and all students are welcome.

Volleyball 2011 This Week’s Draw ‐ Round 4: 9 March Open A v STU Home: MWC Open B v SJF Away: St John Fisher College Junior A v MTA Home: Southbank Tafe Junior B v LHC Away: Lourdes Hill College Junior D v SRC Home: Southbank Tafe Junior E2 v STU Away: Stuartholme College Girls are reminded to change into their playing uniform at Lunch time and report to the MWC at 3.05pm ready for a 3.15 departure. If there is a change to your daughter’s pick up arrangements a note needs to be given to Mrs Gore by morning tea on game day. Supporters are always welcome! Best of luck to all teams.
Results: Round 3 ‐ March Open A ‐ Loreto 3 def LHC 0 In their second game of the season the open A team continued their form and strong serving abilities especially in the first set against Lourdes Hill. The girls did not lose focus or momentum throughout the game through good communication especially during rallies. This enabled them to develop their attacking skills further will some great outside hits.
Open B ‐ STU 2 def Loreto 0 In the first set we were trailing by a margin of about 7 and then Sarah Pettiford had a great serving run to bring us on par with Stuartholme. Unfortunately, we just could not hold to win the set. It was a similar story in the second set trailing 10 ‐ 0. After a time‐out the girls once again staged a comeback, but ultimately were denied by only a few points. In every game we have played we have only lost the sets by a small margin so hopefully next time we can get past this and get a win!
Jnr A ‐ Loreto 2 def LHC 1 The girls had a tough game this week against Lourdes Hill, fighting all the way to win 2 ‐ 1. Great defence by Emily Cumming and serving by Sophie Atkinson and Maddie Dinnen, with all the girls showing huge progress in their spirit, game tactics and skills! The girls are going to work on their front court covering for next week.
Jnr B ‐ Loreto 3 def SSC 0 After a disappointing loss last week to Our Lady’s College, the Junior B Volleyball team has sprung back with a convincing 3 ‐ 0 win against San Sisto College. Focusing on improving the areas of the game that let the team down last week, the girls’ serve‐reception was outstanding. There was more attacking play present, with many points being won off a strong spike from such players as Sarah Toohey and Wade Bilton. Well done, girls!
Jnr D ‐ Loreto 2 def STU 0 Second game, second win! The girls are to be congratulated on using the "W Formation" for the first time, and with such pleasing results! Kate Hutchins led the way with her superb serving and Isobella Scott's excellent movement around the court allowed her to keep many rallies going, which gave this enthusiastic team a big advantage.

CSGSSA SWIMMING CARNIVAL ‐ Next Monday, 14th March is
the Catholic Girls’ Swimming Carnival at Chandler. All Year 8 and 12 students will be attending to support our Swim Team. This is a wonderful opportunity for Big Sisters and Little Sisters to get to know each other and for Year 12 students to induct Year 8 students into some important Loreto traditions, such as the College war cry.
Attendance is compulsory on this day as on any other. Students who do attend feel very let down by other students who stay away without valid reason. We would like this to be an occasion to build community rather than damage it. All non‐attendance will be checked. Students are not to bring magazines, or electronic devices such as IPods. They will be fully engaged in cheering on our swimmers.
Dress for the day for spectators is perfect formal school uniform. A school hat is not required. Students in the swim team will receive a letter with specific details regarding events, uniform, arrival and departure times. All students should bring food and plenty of water. Only very limited canteen facilities will be available for a short time. Students will be travelling to and from the carnival by bus. No student will be able to leave from Chandler unless they bring a parental note to Ms Carty beforehand and a parent is there
to collect them by 2.00pm. Helen Carty ‐ Deputy Principal – Pastoral Care
ST PETERS LUTHERAN COLLEGE SWIMMING MEET ‐ Last Friday 4th March, 33 competitors from the Loreto College swim team competed at the St Peter’s Lutheran College Lead‐Up Swim Meet. It was a very successful meet with the opportunity to compete in a 50m pool and practise the relay changeovers. Congratulations to the girls for their excellent behaviour and support of each other on the night. A special thank you to Loreto parent Mrs Debbie Firrell, our School Captain Emily Poncini and Grace O’Sullivan for timekeeping. A reminder that there is compulsory swimming session on Wednesday morning and a Swim Breakfast for the squad will be held on Friday 11th March at 7.00am. All girls will have a final relay practise Friday morning at 6.30am before breakfast. If any parents would like to assist with the breakfast please call Meg Stevens on 33949980 by Thursday morning.
CROSS COUNTRY ‐ Cross Country training has started in
preparation for the up‐coming season. The training times are from 6.45am to 8.00am on Monday, Thursday and Friday up until the Interschool Cross Country. All girls are welcome, but students MUST sign up at the Sports office before participating.
PRIVATE TENNIS LESSONS ‐ There will be private tennis coaching lessons available on a Friday afternoon directly after school from 3.30pm to 4.15pm at the Loreto tennis courts. Any students who are interested in attending this lesson will need to register with Lifetime Tennis at 1300 301 530 or 3261 7777. Thank you.

Jnr E2 ‐ Loreto 2 def BRI 1 This team continues to grow in strength and game awareness! They are now 3 wins out of 3 matches. Consistent serving is the difference between us and other teams and Georgia Garrett is to be congratulated on her performance in this area. Great improvement by all players, Megan Laycock deserves a special mention here! Well done, girls. Keep up the good work next week.
Other results: Round 2 ‐ Open A ‐ Loreto 3 def MMCK 0 The girls game out firing in their first set of the season with some great serving to win the first set. Good team work kept the intensity up in order for them to win the second set also. The girls adjusted well to playing on a grass court for the first time. Throughout the game the team utilized their middle attack successfully. At the end of the match we all enjoyed a lovely breakfast at the Mary Mackillop Home Economics building. The sportsmanship demonstrated by
both teams was admirable. Kirsty Gore ‐ Volleyball Coordinator
