In an effort to provide additional support for eighth
grade students, Kennedy Road Middle School is
offering Saturday School beginning on
December 11, 2010. Students in need
of additional support have been identi-
fied utilizing data collected from writing
prompts administered to student s
during the months of September,
October, and November. If
your child has been selected to
attend Saturday School, he/she will be provided
transportation to and from school. Students will
also receive breakfast before each session. Four
sessions have been scheduled: December 11 & 18
and January 8 & 15. The 8th Grade State Writing
Assessment will be administered on January 19,
2011. All Georgia 8th graders who
are not eligible for an alternative
assessment are required to demon-
strate writing proficiency on this
exam. If you have additional ques-
tions, please contact Mrs.
Lubin.
Georgia StudiesStudents will be participating
in our role play activity for
the Civil War unit. Students
will choose and assume the
role of a Union or Confeder-
ate soldier in the Civil War.
Assuming the role of a sol-
dier, students will write letters
home explaining all the thingsthey are experiencing while
fighting in battles such as
Gettysburg, Chickamauga,
and Antietam. Other topics
such as Andersonville Prison
and the Union Blockade ofGeorgias Coast will be re-
corded and discussed in first
person perspective letter for-mat.
8th Grade Writing Assessment will
be January 19, 2011.

Science Fair Projects

Reading and Language Update
Math News
Science Fair8th Grade Students will be
working on Science Fair pro-
jects for the remainder of the
month of December and into
January. Students will explore
the scientific method as a part
of 8th Grade Georgia Perform-
ance Standards. All projects
will be due on January 29,
2011. The project is to be
completed in stages and will
account for 6 assessment
grades. Information will be
sent home periodically. Please
check with your student in
order to monitor their pro-
gress. Materials needed for
the completion of the projects
include a log book, tri-board,
and inexpensive household
items for the experimentation
part of the project. If your
student is experiencing diffi-
culty completing their project,
afterschool assistance is avail-
able on Mondays and Tuesdays
from 4 to 5 p.m. If you have

English Language Arts classes
are focused on activities
geared towards writing in
preparation for the upcoming
assessment. Students have
been flexibly grouped accord-
ing to data gathered from
three different writing tests.Instruction has been individual-
ized to assist students with
improving their writing profi-
ciency. It is important for stu-
