welcomeWhen the Statesboro Kiwanis Club made the decision to

bring a rodeo to Statesboro we named it “The First Annual Statesboro Rodeo”, crossed our fingers and hoped it would be well received by the community. Now, here we are at the Eighth Annual Statesboro Kiwanis Rodeo – it’s become a Statesboro spring happening.

It’s with a sense of pride as well as anticipation that we look forward to great audiences, thrilling traditional rodeo events, awesome trick-riding and fun local events – steer dressing, kids calf scramble and treasure hunt.

Our rodeo company, Hedrick Rodeo Company, was 2015 Stock Contractor of the Year for the Southeastern Professional Rodeo Association. They also had the Bronc

of the Year, Willie, and the Trick Rider of the Year, Jessica Hedrick. Danny and Jessica’s children, Justin & Emily Hedrick, won the 2016 & 2017 award for Contract Act of the Year. Colt Hartt, AKA Colt 45, from Waycross, Georgia, will be back again as our Rodeo Clown.

Please take notice of our Rodeo Sponsors. Putting on a first-class rodeo and keeping it high value for you is only possible with their partnership. The best way to thank them is to give them your business. Take particular note that they are local businesses.

Whoop and holler, laugh, applaud the effort in the arena and most of all have FUN!

Hedrick Rodeo Company

Danny Hedrick Hedrick Rodeo Company of Madisonville, Tennessee is celebrating its 15th year producing rodeos. Owners Danny and Jessica Hedrick draw on many years of knowledge and experience rodeo - in 1983 Danny got on his first bucking horse. Danny Hedrick understands rodeo from all aspects…. qualified for the IFR as a contestant, the AFR 12 years in a row, S.E. Regional Finalist and the Southern Rodeo Finals. Danny retired on the rough stock end and began judging rodeos all over the southeast. He was voted in to judge the National Cowboy Finals 10 times, the Southern States Rodeo Finals 4 times, and the Southern Rough Stock Finals. Danny is now one of the official pickup men of Hedrick Rodeo Company. Hedrick Rodeo was proud to be named the Stock Contractor of the Year 2014, voted by the SPRA contestants.

Jessica Hedrick Jessica Smiley-Hedrick started her career in barrel racing in 1990 and has competed in rodeos all over the southeast making numerous finals in both barrel racing and breakaway roping. She is often featured as a specialty act with Patches an American Paint Horse doing tricks from the old west. Trick horses or roman riding, you never now which act will be performed at the rodeo. Jessica was also featured as the “Specialty Act of the Year” for the SPRA Finals in Philadelphia, MS 2014. Jessica is also a full time chiropractor guiding people in her community to better health. The Hedricks are blessed with two wonderful children. – both are fine rodeo performers. Emily and Justin have been trick riding for almost 8 years and have been featured all over the Eastern United States from Florida

to New Jersey.

Justin Hedrick Justin is 18 years old and plays an incredible role in Hedrick rodeos - you will see him flanking horses, carrying a flag, driving out steers and for even more excitement trick riding. Justin not only trick rides at Hedrick rodeos but you will see him all over the country entertaining rodeo fans. Justin was featured as the Specialty Act of the Year for the SPRA Finals 2013. Justin along with Emily, won the 2016 & 2017 award for Contract Act of the Year.

Mark has been entertaining crowds all over America for the past 15 years. He makes his home in New Market TN, a small town on the outskirts of Knoxville.

Growing up with the horse industry and the cowboy way of life made Pro Rodeo a fit from the start. He began his rodeo career as an avid competitor on the timed event end of the arena and one night a last minute cancelation by the Rodeo Announcer caused him to embark on a journey that has led him all over the country.

Now having made his living for over 15 years behind the microphone Mark will tell you his life has truly been blessed by being able to meet so many great people and develop life long friendships along the way.

As the action starts Mark will educate and entertain all of the fans. His experience as a contestant allows a unique view for the rodeo fans and he is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the ways of the American Cowboy.

Great “Family Friendly” fun and entertainment is what Mark strives to achieve!

He believes whether you wear a business suit or a pair of faded jeans, “There’s a

little bit of cowboy in us all”.

Rodeo clown Colt Hartt was riding horses before he was born, literally: His mother was winning rodeo championships during her senior year of high school — when she was 8 months pregnant. His dad was a rodeo champion, too, and his great-grandfather and grandfather were cracker cowboys and worked cows up and down the state.

Colt, 35, grew up in the sport, participating in junior rodeo and high school rodeo and earning a scholarship for team roping and calf roping. He attended Southern Arkansas University and joined the Navy after graduation. Following four years of service, he returned to his rodeo roots.

It was then that he began bull riding, but he has maintained his roping skills. Along the way, he began telling jokes and taking on the role as a rodeo funnyman — and rodeo clown Colt Hartt was born.

He is well-known on the rodeo circuit as “Colt 45.” His acts include “Wild Bill and Widowmaker,” “The Rodeo Queen” and “The Hat Cleaner.”

Colt’s wife, Taylor and their two daughters, 4-year-old Gracleyn Rose Hartt and 1-year-old Hayzie Jo Hartt, travel with him to almost every rodeo.

We’re sure he will have you laughing throughout the rodeo, so sit back and enjoy!

About the

RodeoRodeo has a unique quality of origin to which no

other professional sport can lay claim. It emerged from an industry... from the daily routine and tasks of a low paying job with long hours performed by ranch hands who came to know very well the animals with which they lived. If it were any other kind of job, leisure hours

might have produced another kind of ball game rather than a recreation involving the very animals one had already spent long hours tending. But cowboying has always been more of a way of life than a job or an opportunity to get rich.

STATESBORO KIWANIS RODEO - April 2018 - Page 13 Page 12 - STATESBORO KIWANIS RODEO - April 2018

Page 14 - STATESBORO KIWANIS RODEO - April 2018

Rodeo contests are divided into two categories:1. Those that are scored by a judge... the rough stock events of bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, and bull riding. Rough-stock contestants receive a score from each of the two professional rodeo judges in the arena based on riding style, control, and ability to make the 8-second whistle. Each judge awards the rider from one to 25 points on how well he rides and they score the horse or bull on the same point scale for how well the animal bucks. If the animal bucks the rider off, the judges will record a score only for the animal. 2. Those that are timed for speed... barrel racing, steer wrestling, and the roping contests. Contestants try to complete their event the quickest without receiving any time penalties for breaking the rules of their event. Riding broncs and roping calves are the events that were born on Western ranches. Being able to rope a calf or steer on the open range was a necessary skill if an animal required attention. Riding a bronco kind of horse was part of the territory, as many horses were green broke at best. The contests of riding and roping require only two things of the horses and cattle... either to buck or to run, actions that are natural.

The bald eagle is not only our nation’s symbol, but it is also a huge part of Georgia Southern and Statesboro culture. When Miss Rodeo USA comes to Statesboro for rodeo week, she visits the Georgia Southern University Center for Wildlife Education and the Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center to meet local celebrity Freedom and his handler, Steve Hein.

Miss Rodeo USA 2016 Harmony Latham had this to say about meeting Freedom:

“Meeting Freedom was an absolute honor. I was so nervous to get to interact with one of the most highly regarded symbols of freedom, the United States and the pride of Georgia Southern! Truly an experience that I will never forget and one of my most incredibly treasured memories as Miss Rodeo USA 2016. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be part of this exciting time!”

Miss Rodeo USA 2017 Brittany Howard said, “Meeting Freedom was truly an honor and amazing opportunity that I am so grateful for! I Was captivated by her daily routine with Steve and enjoyed learning her story! Looking back, Having Freedom perch on my shoulder was one of the most amazing experiences of my year as Miss Rodeo USA 2017. I am honored to have been a part of the pride of America and Georgia Southern University!”

bareback bronc riding

The event is judged according to the performances of both the rider and the bucking horse. It is a single-handhold, eight-second ride. It starts with the cowboy’s feet held in a position over the break of the horse’s shoulders. It is held until the horse’s front feet touch the ground on the first jump out of the chute. The rider earns points maintaining upper body control while moving his feet in a toes-turned-out rhythmic motion in time with the horse’s bucking action.

saddle bronc riding

Known as rodeo’s classic event, saddle bronc riding is judged similarly to bareback bronc riding but there are additional possibilities to being disqualified; that is, losing a stirrup or dropping the thickly braided rein that is attached to the horse’s halter. The cowboy sits on the horse differently due to the saddle and rein, and the spurring motion covers a different area of the horse. Saddle broncs are usually several hundred pounds heavier than bareback horses and generally buck in a slower manner.

Summer WeldonMiss Rodeo USA 2018Martin, Tennessee

On January 21st 2018, Summer Weldon was honored to bring the title of Miss Rodeo USA 2018 to her home state of Tennessee. The twenty year old native of Martin, Tennessee is a sophomore at the University of Tennessee at Martin where she is currently studying cell and molecular biology with hopes of attaining a dual degree in physical and occupational therapy. Summer is also a member of the prestigious UT Martin rodeo team where she competes in barrel racing. She is the daughter of Cameron and Beth Weldon, and has one brother, Chance, who is her biggest supporter.

Summer grew up competing in the sport of rodeo from an early age. Rising through the ranks of junior and high school rodeo prior to her college career, she competed in barrel racing, pole bending, break away roping, ribbon roping, goat tying, and girls’ cutting. As a six time qualifier for the National Junior High and National High School Finals Rodeos, Summer is no stranger to the national stage. Rodeo has been a way of life for Weldon for many years, and she has represented the sport of rodeo well by holding fourteen rodeo queen titles across five states prior to her Miss Rodeo USA win.

During her year as Miss Rodeo USA 2018, Summer will be speaking on her platform, “Living Beyond Boundaries”. As a future physical and occupational therapist, Summer hopes to help individuals coping with disability by encouraging them to set goals and work hard to achieve them. Through involvement in special needs rodeos, she also hopes to actively work with individuals with special needs. Summer is extremely honored to represent the International Professional Rodeo Association cowboys and cowgirls as she travels across the country during 2018. Becoming Miss Rodeo USA is the culmination of a life-long dream for Weldon. As she embarks on the nearly 100,000-mile journey, Summer is looking forward to meeting new people, making new friends, and creating memories that will last a lifetime as she promotes the greatest sport in the world.

The bulldogger is assisted by the hazer, who rides along the steer’s right to keep the animal running straight.

teamroping

Team roping is the only rodeo event that features two contestants. The team is made up of a header and a heeler. The header ropes the horns, then dallies or wraps his rope around his saddle horn and turns the steer to the left for the other cowboy who ropes the heels. The heeler must throw a loop with precision timing to catch both of the steer’s hind legs. The time clock stops once both ropers have made a catch and brought the animals to a stop, facing each other.

calf ropingCalf roping is an authentic ranch skill that originated

from working cowboys. Once the calf has been roped, the cowboy dismounts and runs down the length of the rope to the calf. When the calf is on the ground, the cowboy ties three legs together with a six-foot pigging string. Calves are given a head start, and if the cowboy’s horse leaves the box too soon, a barrier breaks and a 10-second penalty is added to the roper’s time. In all of the timed events, a fraction of a second makes the difference between winning and losing.

barrelracing

This event is a horse race with turns. The time begins as they ride their horse across the starting line in the arena. They make a run around three upright barrels, which are in a cloverleaf pattern, and back to the starting line where the clock stops. Tipping a barrel is permitted, but if it is knocked to the ground, a five-second penalty is added to their time.

calf scramble

Calf scramble is a fun family event in which a group of children runs after a calf and attempts to pull a flag from its tail. It is full of laughter and energy as the crowd watches the “future rodeo cowboys and cowgirls.”

This is a hilarious fun event where the steer/calf leaves the bucking chute, and a team of cowboys/cowgirls wrestle the animal long enough to put clothing on it.

bullriding

Bull riders, who might not weigh more than 150 pounds, place a flat braided rope around a bull that weighs almost 2000 pounds. The bull rope is placed around the animal, just behind its shoulders. It is then looped and threaded through itself and the cowboy wraps it around his riding hand with only his grip holding him in place. The rider relies on balance and leg strength to make the eight-second buzzer. Look for bull riders to sit up close to their bull ropes and to turn their toes out because rides are judged on the riding style of the competitor and the bucking ability of the bull.
