WOMEN AND MEN, FREE TO BE #8thmarch european action for self-determination We are students, young people, girls and boys. Our mothers and our grandmothers, with the greatest pacific revolution of the last century, Feminsm, gave us a world of equality and rights, at least formally. March 8th is a day in which we celebrate women's achievements in social and political fields. A chance to give a new strength to the struggle against discrimination and violence, a time to think about our next steps. International Women's Day is more than this: a way to remember our past and wonder our future. We are a generation of women that can and want to decide on their own lives. We are a generation of women living in a men’s world. We want to be a generation that lives in a world of both women and men. Our desire of knowledge, our will to take part in public life, our passion for politics, culture and our engagement in social aspects, most of the time are clashing with the backwardness of our Country. When the economic crisis spreads out so bad, like in the time we are living in, it’s us, women, who pay the highest price: the rate of female unemployment, especially in the South, is now dramatically high. Lack of job means lack of autonomy. Also, the crisis is being used as an excuse to cut on welfare and all the care-taking roles are considered to be a female “natural tendency”: so the State can cut on public Education and Public Health Service, because, anyhow, every women will take care of it, in private, without getting paid and without getting the opportunity to search for another job. Our opportunities are getting smaller and smaller and the Country is not growing in any sense. We live in a Country that was never really concerned about our freedom and our right to self-determination: our Country is ruled by men, most of them being outright sexist, so the long path to build equality between genders, a path that starts from schools, is very hard. We live in a Country that responds to women’s desire of freedom with violence, with femicide. We live in a Country that responds to self-determination of women trying to keep us from getting an abortion but, at the same time, cutting on maternity rights and assistance, so that we cannot really decide if we want to become mothers or not, and when. We are a generation of men living in a men’s world. Though it seemed to be “natural” in the beginning, we now know that in fact it is pretty much anomalous. We have been raised up by our mothers who used to see themselves as self-determined and free, and we want to share our lives with women that are also self-determined and free. We are tired of living in a stereotype that tells us how to be “real men”. We want to take part in the challenge of creating a new world of freedom and equality for both genders, not to do a favor to women, but to do a “favor” to all of us. In these days the Spanish government wants to approve a law that limits the possibility of getting an abortion: it will be possible only in case of rape or very serious consequences for the woman’s health. Just before this, the European Parliament said no to the Estrela Resolution that wanted to protect women’s rights about health and maternity in Europe. We can add that in Italy, the law 194 concerning abortion, is practically no longer working because of the “conscientious objection” (which means that people working in the public health service can refuse to do an abortion because of personal/religious beliefs) that is around 90% in the South. We won’t let you play with the indifference of a generation that may think that some rights are acquired forever. We want freedom and we want even more freedom and rights than before. We want Europe to be our hope, not a menace. That’s why we want female rights to be a constitutive part of the idea of European citizenship and of the European community. That’s why we ask to all students around Europe to take part in this challenge and to fight with us, just like we did in the past for many other reasons, to build our Europe of Rights. This is not just about women’s rights, this is about who we want to be and the Europe we want to live in. We can win this battle only if we fight together. #8thmarch #differentbutequals #yodecido

LIBERE E LIBERI DI ESSERE #8marzo mobilitazione europea per

l'autodeterminazione

Siamo studentesse e studenti, ragazzi e ragazze.
