Timing Magneto to Engine

Before timing spark to engine, inspectfaceof Magneto and locate timing marks. Ifthe timing marks are two lines, one on theMagneto face and one on the Coupling, pro -ceed by Method 1. If the timing marks area line and a dot on the Magneto face, and aline on the Coupling, proceed by Method 2.

MAGNETO FACE PLATE

To accomplish by Method 1. (TVo Lines)

1. Remove Air Cleaner, Air CleanerBracket.

2. Loosen Magneto Coupling Nut until itslipsonthe Camshaft. It may be necessaryto tap coupling gently.

3. Remove Cylinder Head.

4, Bring Piston to Top Dead Center on thecompression stroke (both valves closed) .

Measure, accurately, ttre distance from topof Piston to top of Cylinder Wall. Recordthis measurement, then add 5/L6 of. an inch .

5. Turn the Starter Pulley counter clock -wise until the Piston goes down the cylinderapproximately an inch. Then bring Pistonback up Cylinder slowly until it is the dis-tance calculated in step four. (5/16" plusdistancefromtop of Cylinder Wall to Pistonat TopDead Center)" This procedure takesup any back-lash in the gears.

6. Hold the Magneto Shaft Extension withVise-Grip Pliers so it will not move. Ro-tate the Magneto Impulse (inoperative) untilthe timing marks line up.

7. Be sure that there is at least L/641' endplay in the Magneto coupling so it will notcramp the impulse. Use a L/64tt (.015)Feeler Gauge between the Fiber Block andthe Coupling Flange before tightening nut.Tighten nut while holding timing marks to-gether.

8 " Check your settings by backing the Pistonnot more than two inches down the cylinderbarrel (to avoidpicking up Magneto impulse)and review the procedure.

9. When timing is correct, lock MagnetoCoupling Nut.

10. NOTE: Timing Marks will not line upwhen piston is at Top Dead Center.

MAGNETO I'ACE PLAllE

To accomplish -ioy Method 2. (Lines and dot)

1. Remove Air Cleaner, Air eleanerBracket.

2, Loosen Magneto Coupling Nut until itmovesonthe Camshaft. Itmay be necessaryto tap the coupling gently.

3. Crank Starter Pulley r:ntil you feel thebeginning of the Compression Stroke. Re-move Spark PIug, observe by eye or, moreaccurately, measure to piston surface until

Temperature range from 32o to 10o F.Use Mobiloil Arctic (SAE 20-20W) L00 andbelow, Mobiloil Special (SAE -10W -30)

Oil is checked by having tractor level.Remove Try-Cock Wing Nut on Chassis. Ifoil runs out, youhave enough. When filling,be sure to fill only r:ntil oil runs out.REPAIRSCrqnkpin

Crankpin dlameter is L.497 /L. 498, andthe Connecting Rod big end Bushing must bereamed to 1.500. The Crankpin diameterhas been changed. We suggest you acou-rately t'rrriket' the Crarrkpin. If less thanL.497, rearn the Bushlng to give .002/.003clearance.

Connecting Rod has bronze Bushing,pressed into Rod. Crankpin into Flywheelis a . 001 to . 003 interference fit. An inter-ference fit means that the Crankpin is ac-tualty .001 to .003 larger tban the hole inthe Flywheel. The Crankpin must be a verytight fit to keep it from turning. Thereforethe Cranl*pin is pressed into the Flywheel.(Note that Flywheel must be pressed tighUyto shoulder on Crankpin.)

Piston, Pin, Rings

Piston is equipped with three rings.1 Chrome Compression Ring

(Ring Gap: .01-2 to .020)L Steel Compression Ring:

(Ring Gap: .008 to .016)1 Oil Scraper Ring:

Old Styte Ifon Ring, (Gap:.008 to .016) or New StyleThree Piece Chrome OilRing: Ring (Gap " 015 to .055)

We have recently put into production anew, chrome-plated steel, three piece oilring,part number LH-546. Both our labora-torytestsandfieldtests show this ring muchs up e r i o r to the old style cast iron ring.Therefore, even though it is more expen-sive, we are using it now in all productior4andthe rings ate avanlable on repair orders.

The rings will be furnished in standard,"010, .020. and.030 oversizes.

The standard size canbe used up to .009oversize, the .020 up to .029 oversize, andthe .030 up to .039 oversize.

We recommend the use of the ring es-pecially when rrsmokingrr occurs in the equip-ment, and yet the compression rings arestill in good shape. Quite often, the simpleexpedient of changing the old cast iron ringto the new style will stop the I'smokingilcompletely.

Of course, it is better to refinish thecylinder bore, and ude the proper size ofoversize pistons and rings. The LH-546new three-piece oil ring should have from.015 to " 055 end gap for the two flat seg-ments. In contrast, the old style cast ironoil ring should have " 008 to .01-6 end gap.The LH-548 top chrome compression ringshould have .012 to .020 end gap. Measuretheendgapwitha feeler Sauger with the ringr e m o v e d from the piston and held in thecylinder bore"

Installation of the new ring, though notdifficult, must be carried outwith care,following the instructions given below care-fully and accurately.INSTRUCTIONS FOR I}TSTAJ,LTNG THREE-PIECE OIL RING

1. Place stainless steelexpander spacer ingroove with ends butted.2" Install steel segment on top side of ex-pander spacer with gap of segment approxi-mately 90o beyondgap of stainless steel ex-pander spacer, making certain that the ex-pander spacer is still in a butted position.3. Install second segment on bottom sideof the e xp an d e r spacer with segment gapapproximately 90o from the expander spacergap in opposite direction from which the topsegrnent has been installed.4. Recheck assembly - rings should be freeto move in the groove, however, a slightdrag will be evident because of the sidesealing action of the ring as sembly. BESURE EXPANDER SPACER REMAINS INBUTTED POSITION.5. When pistons are ready for installationin the cylinders, compress rings carefully,and slip the cylinder down over piston andrings. Since the Cylinder is chamfered, aslight twisting motion will allow this pro-cess to be carried out easily, without forcing.

If any difficulty is encountered, the ringsshould be checked for correct installation inthe groove.

SEGMENIGAP

PistonPin(WristPin) is . 859 diameter.Small end of Connecting Rod holds BronzeBushing which should be reamed to .860/-.861.

Piston Pin (Wrist Pin) is a solid fit inthe Piston. It is a light push fit in a hotPiston.

Piston skirt clearance is .003/.005,measuredwith a FeelerGauge at right anglesto the Piston Pin.

To determine if cylinderneeds reboring:1. UseanyPiston Rlng, inserting it in thecylinder L/2 Lnctr from the bottom of thebore, using the piston to square it with thesides. Measure the Gap with Feeler Gauge .

2, Use the same ring, L/Zlnch from thetop of the Cylinder, seated true with piston ,measure the gap.

3. Subtract smaller reading from largerreadi:rg, then dlvide by 3.4. If resultis more than .006, we recom-mend the cylinder be rebored to the next.010 over size. Pistons and Rings are fur-nishedinoversizes: .005, .010, .015 .020, .025.030. Diameter of Standard Cylinder is3.2545/3.2535.Crankshaf!

Drive Pinion Shaft Bushing should bereamed to 1.0005/0.9995. The Drive Pin-ion Shaft is factory toleranced to .9975/-.9965, which gives an overall clearance of.002/.004. (Drive Pinion Shaft Bushing isfurnished in .005, .025 O. D. Oversize) .

(DrivePinionShaJt Bushing is fitted in-to hot crankcase.)

The Timing Pinion Shaft is fitted intotheBall Bearing at rnanufactured tolerance.Camshafts

Camshafts must be timed very accu-ratelyto engine forbest results. See timingdiagram.

On Tractors manufactured before Sep-tember 1955, the appearance of the Cam pro-files in relation to a straightedge will varyas shown in the same Timing Diagram. Onall rnodels, when checking Timing, carefullyobserve the Camprofile and position. If notas shown in sketch C, replace Camshafts.

Camshaft Bushings are reamed with a. ?50 reamer. Camshaft diameters are pre-cision ground to .7480/.7490, Clearanceshould be .001 to .003.

NOTE: Bushings shouldbe line reamed,in place in bolted-together Crankcases.Crankcases must be replaced, when neces-sary, in Pairs.

Oil Pump is a precision gear PumP.Fits and tolerances must be held closely toineure good oil supply at essentlal lubrica-tion polnts.

Oil Pump Bushing should be reamed to7/L6,, (.4373/.4388). The oil Pump MasterGear Saft is toleranced at .4363/.4368,which means clearances must be held to.0005 to .0025.

Oil Pump Gears must be a snug fit lnthe Oil Pump Cap.To Accomplish:1. Pressldler Gear Pln. into place bystarting it fir the Crankcase, placing the IdlerGearoverit, and pressing it until it is flushwtth the top surface of the Idler Gear.2. P1ace Dowel Pin in Crankcase. As-sembleOilPump Gears and OiI Seal in Cap.Check that the Gears are flush with surfaceof Oil Pump Cap with the Gashet ln place.3. Assemble to Crankcase, using a g/L6"socket and speed handle on the O i I P u mpIdler Gear Pinion Shaft Nut.4. After cap is seated, wash out and checkby putting oil in large opening and turningspeed handle to check pumping action andwash out pump.

Note that the Idler Gear Stud must bechecked carefully to see that it is the sameheight as the gears. Also, be sure to checkOitPumpGearstobe sure they are the samethickness and that they are free of burrs.Never put new gears in an old Cap"

TROUBLESIIOOTINGTractor Englne Falls to Start

Probable causes are, ln order of theirfrequency:

1. Out of Fuel2, Fuel shut off at sediment bowl3. Stuck valve4. Fouled or out of adjustment Spark

Plug.5. Magneto failure6. Timing failureTools needed for this service work:

4. Remove Spark Plug, checkfor for.rl-ing, burning, wetness, Remove carbon,dry if necessary, reset at .033. If SparkPIug appears to need replacement, replacewith Autolite TT-10.

5. IfyouDO NOThave COMPRESSION,you usually will have a valve stuck open.The primary sympton is a sudden (usuallyovernight) 1o s s of compresslon. Lack ofcourpression due to Ring Trouble is a gra-dual loss, getflng progressively worse, andcharacterizedby oily smoke fromthe extraustfor someperiodbefore actual complete com-pression loss.

6. Remove cylinder head. (ObserveGasket. Replace if necessary).

7, Check to see if there is any bit ofcarbononthe Valve seatwhich might be pre-venting the Valve from completely closing.If so, removeandgrind Valve to a good seatif necessary.

8. If no carbon bits are present, floodthe Valve and stem with penetrating oil. Letrrsoakt' a few minutes, flood again. Using ascrewdriver in the slot on top of the Valve,beginworkingtheValve by attempting to ro-tate the valve. If this is unsuccessful, floodagain with penetrating oil, (IMPORTANT:Ttrrn engine over until impulseclicks-tobesure you donrt break Cams.) Then tap theValve ltehtly with the hammer. Again usethe Screwdriver" The Valve will usuallybreak loose in a very strort time. Continueto work untll lt is perfectly free, and risesandfallswiththe turning over of the engine .

Chronic cases of Valve sticking can beeliminated by one of the Bronze VaLve Guides.

9. Observe the seating and the actionof theValves. If a Valve Grinding Job is in-dicated, recommend it to the customer atthat time. If Valve s need replacement,recommend it.

10. Occaeionally a Valve is stuckclosed. This is rare, however. The symp-toms will show up immediately when youattempt to turn the englne over by HAND.The Englne will "stop deadt' at a certainpoint. Reversing the direction of hrrn, the

Englne will stop again at the same point lnthe firing cycle. The procedure is exactlythe same as for releasing a Valve that isshrck open. WARIiIING: Never attempt totest for a shrck valve by turning the englneover in any manner except by HAND. Tura-inganEngtne over with a strap, or by forc-ing, when a Valve is stuck closed will re-sult in fracture of the Crankcase, necessi-tating replacement.

11. If the Engine has compresslon,the Spark PIug is ln good order, etc., testthe spark"

L2. The Spark should jump at least3/t6,'when tested by putting the end of theMagneto Cable connectionthis distance fromametalobject. (Usually the Cylinder Head) .

13. If the Spark ls weak, it is usuallycaused by condensatlon within the Magneto.Remove the Cap, dry out the Magneto. (Youcan observe the wetnesswhenthe Cap is re-moved.)

L4, Normally, if the Magneto is notfiring correctly, routinely replace Coil,Condenser, and points.

15. If itis impractical, or undesirable,to replace all of these parts, observe thePoints first, to make sure they are breaking,and are not burned or dirty.

16. If the Points are dirty or wet, cleanby using a piece of hard paper. (A piece ofpaperfrom a "slickt' magazine works well.)Spread the Points by hand, release on thepaper, and pull the paper through.

L7, Adjust the Polnts. On Wico Mag-netos, the setting is .015: on Bendix-Scin-tilla, . 018.

18. To adjust, release the adjustingscrewby turning the locking screw slightly.Make the adjustment by turning the adjustingscrew, then lock in place with the lock screw.See separate Magneto instructions. If youreplace, remember to lubricate the feltwasherontheWico Magneto. BE SURETIMING MARKS ARE LINED UP when youmake this adjustment!

19. If the Spark you get is very red,instead of blue or yellow-white, it is pro-bably the condenser. A bad condenser willusually allow the E ngine to start, but theEngine wiII backfire and spit, and quit. If

thereisno sparkatall, lt ls usually the Coil.

20. ToreplacetheCoil, Condenser, ordo any other work on the Magneto, it ls bestto remove the Magneto from the Tractor.

2L. To remove, turn the Engine overbyhandrrntilthe Timtng Marks are lined up.DO NOT MOVE THE ENGINE UNTIL YOUHAVE REPLACED THE MAGNETO. WhenYou are ready to replace the Magneto, llnethe Timing Marks onthe Magneto and replaceIt. The englne will be Tlmed the same as itwas when you removed the magneto.

22, Loosen ttre Bolts from the bottommounting, and remove the magneto, pullingstralght back (away from engine) so as tonot disturb the Tlming.

23. If the Magneto is furnishtng a strongSbark, and all other factors mentloned areconect, then the difftculty is probably inthe ttmtng. See "Tlmlng Model L Englnerr).

IINUSUAL FAILURES

24. Clogged Gas Llne: You can usuallyspot thts by observing the earburetor.

25. Alr pocket in the G a s I ln e: Oc-caslonally, when a User rune completelyout of gag and reftlls the tank, a "pocket" ofalr ls trapped ln ttre system. If the Englnels not getttng gas, observe the SedlmentBowl. If tt ts fiill, thore ls no alr pocket.If the Sedtment Bowl gas level ls downsltghtly, the alr pocket ls preeent. Tocorrect, wrscrewthe nut that holds the gtassbowlenowh to break the vacuum ln the sys-tsm. The Bowl wtll flII' and you have cor-reotBd the condltlon.

26, A bufld-up of mud or dlrt on theMagneto Etop Button, or a bendlng of theButton whtoh keeps lt ln contact wlth theMagneto. Thls, of course, shofts out theMagneto and allows no sparks to reach theEnglne.

27, Very rarelY a User forgets to re-place the oap onthe Magneto connection to the

Spark PIug, and coincidentally the hood willbe bent down. Tttts wtll short the Magnetoout also.

28. Carburetor adjustment may causehard starting, but rarely causes a tractornot to start at all. Usually the tractor wlllrun, even if adjustment ls off. See frCarbu*retor Instnrctionsrr.

ALIGNING FLYWHEELS:Method 1

Dealers who desire to check Fly WheelBalance should acquire the following items:

1 Anderson Balancing Way Size 1-AManuJactured by Anderson BrothersMfS. , Co., Rockford, Illinois.

1 Piece Cold Rolled Steel 3/4tt Dia.about 3" Iong weighing eight ounces.

To Check Fly Wheel Balance:

L. Remove piston from connecting rod.

2. Put the FIy Wheel Assembly on balanc-ing ways with the corurecting rod hangingdown.

3. Insert eight ounce weight in wrist pinbearing" This will give the equipoise neces-sary for good engine operation.

The Crank Bearing producesalightdampening action on the operation and due tothis fact good balance depends somewhat onthe judgment of the operator.

Give the assembly a slight rolling startin different directions and position. If inyour judgment there is a heavy spot, correctthis by removing some metal, (preferably bydrilling, ) from the side of the fly wheel rim.

Notknowing whether this error is in oneor bothwheels it wouldbe better to divide themetal removed and take some from both.Method 2

If youdonot have ordo not wish to obtainthe Balancing Ways, a field method that is

satisfactory is as follows:

1"Aligning Flywheels by eye as closely as

possible, and prdss in place"

2. Using a machinest Depth Gauge andSquare, place it on the flywheels so that therrsquarerr part of the depth gauge is on themachined flat face of the flywheel' and theGauge part is lying along the outside diameterof the Flywheel.s, parallel to the centerlineof the bore in the flywheel.

P1ace the Drive Pinion Shaftandthe Tim-ing Pinion Shaft in the centering spindles.

Clamp or otherwise attach a piece of flatsteel to the Grinder frame, in such a manneras to allowyou toplace an f rtrdicator Dialil onthe steel. An Indicator DiaI is one that willshow out-of-roundness in thousandths.

Then, by putting the pointer of the Indi-cator in contact with the OD of the Flywheel,and rotating the flywheel assembly slowly inthe Centersryou can determine quickly if theflywheels are out of alignment or out of bal-ance.

ZENITH 68 SERIES CARBURETORFOR GRAVELY TRACTORS

The Zenith 68 Series carburetors are of updraft singleventuri desigrr. These carburetors are I'balancedil andt'sealedt', and the semi-concentric fuel bowl allowsoperation to quite extreme angles without flooding orstarving.

FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM(See Fig. 1)

The fueL supply system is made up of the threaded fuelinlet, the fuel valve seat, fuel vaLve needle, float andfuel bowl.

The fuel supply line is connected to the threaded inlet.The fuel travels through the fuel valve seat and passesaround the fuel valve and into the fuel bowl The levelof the fuel in the fuel chamber is regulated by the floatthrough its control of the fuel valve. The fuel valvedoes not open and close alternately but assumes anopening, regulated by the float, sufficient to malntaina proper level in the fuel chamber equal to the demandof the engine according to its speed and load.

The inside bowl vent as illustrated by the passageoriginating in the air i.ntake and continuing through tothe fuel bowL, is a method of venting the fuel bowlto maintain proper air fuel mixtures even though theair cleaner may become restricted. This balancing isfrequently referred to as an t'inside bowl ventt'.

IDLE SYSTEM(See Fig. 2)

The idle system consists of two idle discharge holes,idle air passage, idle adjusting needle, idle jet, andfuel pick-up passage.

The fuel for idle is supplied through the main jet to a well

directly below the main discharge jet. The pick-upp:rssage is connected to this well by a restricted drill-ing at the bottom of this passage. The fuei travelsthrough this channel to the idle jet calibration. The airfor the idle mixture originates back of (or from behind)the main venturi. The position of the idle adjustingneedle (normally one turn from its seat) in this passagecontrols the suction on the idle jet and thereby the idLemixture. Turning the needle in closer to its seat re-sults in a greater suction with a smal,ler amount of airand therefore a richer mixture. Turning the needle outaway from its seat increases the amount of air and re-duces the suction, and a Leaner mixture is delivered.The fuel is atomized and mixed with the air in thepassage leading to the discharge holes and enters theair stream at this point

HIGH SPEED SYSTEM(See Fig. 3)

The high speed system controls the fuel mixture atpart throttle speeds and at wide open throttle. Thissystem consists of a venturi, controlling the maximumvolume of air admitted into the enginel. the main jet,which regulates the flow of fuel from the float chamberto the main discharge jet; the well vent, which main-iains uniform mixture ratio under changing suction;rnd engine speeds; and a main discharge jet, whichdelivers the fuel into the air stream.

The main jet controls the fuel delivery during the partthrottle range from about one-quarter to full throttleopening. A main jet adjustment permits a limited con-trol of the main jet fuel. Ordinarily an adjustment of2-L/4 turns from its seat will give proper mixture.To mainLain a proper mixture ration a smaLl amountof air is admitted through the well vent into the dis-charge jet through the air bleed holes in the dischargejet at a point below the ievel of fuel in the meteringwell.

The choke system consists of a valve mounted on ashaft located in the air entrance and operated exter-natly by a lever mormted on the sha-ft. The chokevalve is used to restrict the air entering the carbure-tor. This increases the suction on the jets whenstarting the engine. The choke valve is of a "semi-Automatic" type, having a poppet valve incorporated inits design, which is controlled by a spring.

The poppet valve opens automatically when the enginestarts and admits air to avoid over- choking or floodingof the engine. The mixture required for starting isconsiderably richer than that needed to develop powerat normaL temperatures. As the engine fires and speedand suction are increased, the mixture ratlo must berapidly reduced. This change is accomplished throughadjustment of the choke vaLve and the automatic openingof the poppet valve to admit more air when the enginefires ,

(2) Make match marks with file on throttlebody (6) and all levers to act as a guide toassemble these parts in the same positionas removed.

(3) File off the riveted or peened end of thethrottie Plate screws (2)'

NOTE: When such screws are riveted or peenedthe threaded end of the two screws must be filedflat before removal to avoid breakage or strip-ping of threads in the shaft. In some cases itmay be necessary to use a smaLl (1,/4") roundfile and cut slightly below the surface of theshaft because of a slight counler bore aroundthe screlv hole.

BE SURE TO AVOID STRIKING AND CUTTINGTHE SIDE OF THE THROTTLE BODY BORE ORTHE THROTTLE PLATE WHEN FILING THESCREWS.

(4) Remove the screws (2) and pull out thethrottle plate (3).

(5) Remove the throttle shaft and stop leverassembly (3).

(I) Remove the throttle shaft packing (8) and pack-ing retainer (9) from the throttle body shaft asfollows:

(1) Screw a 5/LGt' fine thread taper tap intopacking retainer (9) urtii it is firmly seated.

(2') Insert long punch or rod through oppositeshaft hole and drive punch against the endof the tap until retainer (9) is free of thebody. (Repeat operation for other packingand retainer )

NOTE: Do not disassemble the throttie plate,(3), throttle shaft and stop lever assembly (1-3),throttle packing (8), and packing retainer (9)from the throttle body (6) unless the throttlesha^ft is bent or otherwise damaged or unlessthere is damage to any of the other componentparts of the throttle assembly.

E. DISASSEMBLE FUEL BOWL BODY

(a)Remove the main jet adjusting needle assembly(21) and fibre washer (22) using a I/2" wrench.

(b)Remove the drain plug (hex) (26) from bottomof fuel bowi (20), using Zenith Tool No. C-161-10

(c)Remove main jet (23) and fibre washer (24) withZenit}r Tool No. C161-83.

(d)Remove main discharge jet (43) and fibre wash-er (42) from center of large opening in ma-

chined surface of the fuel bowi (20) withZenith Tool No. C161-9.

(e)Remove well vent jet $\ from center of largeopening in machined surface of the fuel bowl(20) with a small screwdriver.

(f) Disassemble choke as follows:

(1) Make match marks with a file on air intakebody (20) and lever (31) to act as a guldeto reassemble these parts in same posi-tion as removed,

(2) Remove the choke shaft thrust washer (49)and taper pin (41).

(3) Remove the choke plate screws (40) andremove the choke shaft (31) and chokepiate (39).

NOTE: This earburetor employs choke shaftpacking washers (37) and packing washerretainers (27) in the choke shaft holes aroundthe choke shaft. The disassembly of thesepacking washers and retainers should be per-formed in the same manner as the disassemblyof the throttle shaft packing washers and re-tainers which is described in detail in the dis-assembly of the throttle body.

NOTE: DO NOT DISASSEMBLE THE CHOKELEVER AND SHAFT (31) AND PLATE(39) UNLESS THERE IS DAMAGE TO ANYONE OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED PARTSOR DAMAGE TO ANY OF THE OTHER COM_PONENT PARTS OF THE CHOKE ASSEMBLY.

9leaning and Inspection of Parts

CLEANING PARTS

(a) Clean all metal parts thoroughly with cleaningsolution and rinse in solvent.

(b)Blow out all passages in the air intake and fuelbowl casting (20) and throttle body (6).

NOTE: Be sure aLl carbon deposits have beenremoved from throttle bore and idle dischargeholes. It is advisable to reverse flow of com-pressed air in all passages to insure that alldirt has been removed. Never use a wireor fuill to clean out iets.

INSPECTION OF PARTS

(a) Float Assembly. Replace float assembly (16)if loaded with gasoline, damaged, or if floataxle bearing is worn excessively. Inspecttop side of float lever for wear where it con-tacts fuel valve needle.

NOTE: Such wear can affect the float level.

Float A-rle. Replace if any wear can bevisually detected on the bearing surface.

Fuel VaLve Seat and Needle Assembly. Alwaysreplace fuel vaLve seat and needle (18) be-cause both parts wear and may cause improperfloat 1evel.

Idling Adjustment Needle and Spring. In-spect point of needle (5). This must besmooth and free of ri.dges.

Throttle Plate. Inspect plate (3) for burrsor damaged edges. Never clean a throttleplate with a buffing wheel or sharp instru-ment.

Choke Plate (39). Inspect for bends, burrsor damaged edges.

Choke Shaft. Check bearing surfa.ces forwear; see that shaft (31) is straight.

Gaskets: Replace all gaskets and fibrewashers every time the carburetor is dis-assembled.

(i) Throttle Shaft. Replace if throttle shaft (48)shows evidence of wear on the bearing sur-faces.

REASSEMBLY

FUEL BOWL BODY

(a) Choke Assembly

(1) lnstall the choke shaft packlng (37) andretainers (27) in fuel bowl body (20) asfollows. Use bushing drlver tool Zenithct67-72-7.

(2) Assemble packing (37) and retainer (27)and place completed assembly on bushingdriver tool with packlng facing small endof too1.

(3) Insert sma1l end of tool into choke shafthole, start retainer (27) irfto eorurter borein body (20) and lightly drive retainer (27)into body (20) until it is flush with ma-chined surface.

(4) Insert ehoke shaft and lever (31) into airintake (20).

(5) Insert choke plate (39) into air intake (20).

NOTE: Be sure the choke plate (39) is 1o-cated in the same position in the air intake(20) as regards the poppet valve as when itwas disassembled.

(6) lrstall choke plate screws (40) using a

small screwdriver.

(7) Install the choke shaft thrust washer(a9) and taper pin (41).

NOTE: Use the "Match Marks" put on thechoke lever (31-) and air intake body (20)during disassembly to properly align thechoke assembly during reassembly.

(b) Install main discharge jet (43) and fibrewasher (42) in fuel bowl (20) and tightenflrmly with Zenith Tool No. C161-9.

(c) Install well vent jet ${ in fuel bowi (20)and tighten with a small screwdriver.

(d) Inshfl main jet (23) and fibre washer (24)using Zenith Tool No. C161-83.

(e) lrstall the drain plug (hex) in threaded passagebottom of fuel bowl using Zernth Tool C161-10Wrench.(f) Install main jet adjustment (21) seat lightlyand back out 2-L/4 turns.

THROTTLE BODY

InstalL the two new throttle shaft packings(8) and retainers (9) in throttle body (6) asfollows. Use bushing driver tool ZenithcL6L-72-L.

(1) Assemble packing (B) and retainer (9)and place completed assembly on bush-ing driver tool with packing facing smallend of tool.

(2) Insert small end of tool into throttleshaft hole, start retainer (9) intocounter-bore in body (6) and lightlydrive retainer (9) into body (6) untilit is flush with machined surface.

NOTE: The packing retainer (9) must beflush with machined surface or slightly be-low to avoid striking throttle lever (11).

Install the throttle shaft and stop lever as-sembly (13), throttle plate (3), screws (2)as follows:

(1-) Insert the throttle shaJt and stop leverassembly (13) in throttle body (6).

(2) Rotate throttle shaft (48) to wide openposition, insert throttle plate (3) androtate to closed position hoiding theplate in positi.on with fingers.

(3) Start throttle plate screws (2) and tightenwith small screwdriver, being surethat the throttle plate (3) is properlycentered in the throttle body bore.

(c) Install idle adjusting needle (5) and frictionspring (4) in threaded passage on side ofthrottle body. Seat lightly with screwdriverand back out one full ttt.rn.

(d) Instarl idle jet {4).

(e) Install fuel valve seat (18) and fibre washer(17) using Zenit}: Tool No. C1"61-82.

(f) Place new throttle body to fuel bowl gasket(19) on machined surface of fuel bowl cover(6), making sure venturi flange is set inthrottle body recess below gasket.

(g) Insta"tl fuel valve needle (l-B) in seat (18)followed by float (l-6) and float axie (15).

SEE FIG. 5 The !'A" dimension should beL 5/32tt plus or minus 3/64".

(h) Float Level. Check position of float as-sembly for corect measurement to obtainproper float level using depth gauge.

NOTE: Do not bend, twist or apply pressure onthe float bodies.

(1) With bowl cover assembly (6) in aninverted position, viewed from free endof float (16) the float bodies must becentered and at right angles to the ma-chined surfaces. The float setting ismeasured from the machined surface(no gasket) of cover to top side of floatbodies at highest point.

(2) Bending Float Lever. To lacrease ordecrease distance between float bodyand machined surface use long nosedpliers and bend lever close to floatbody.

NOTE: Replace with new float if position isoff more thar. L/!6tt.

(i) Insert venturi (45) in throttle body bore,large opening first. Making sure venturiflange is set in throttle body recess belowassembly gasket.

ASSEMBLE CARBURETOR BODIES

(a) Assemble the two completed bodies (6 and20) and four screws (25) and tighten screwsevenly and firmly.

(b) Hold the throttle lever (11) in a clos.edposition and turn the throttle stop screw(12) 1r:. rurtil it just contacts the stop onbody (6), then turn screw (L2) in J,-L/zadditional turns.

TIMINGThe magneto is properly timed to the en-

gine at the factory. If it becomes necessary toretime the magneto to the engine, refer to theinstructions in the engine instruction book.

LUBRICATIONThe only iubricating point in the magneto

is the cam wiper felt, 5077. This felt, whichIubricates the breaker arm at point of contactwith the cam, should be replaced wheneveritisnecessary to replace the breaker contacts.IMPORTANT

Incorrectly adjusted spark plug gaps causemagneto failure more frequently than any othercondition.

Sparkplugs should be inspected at frequentintervals, the size of the gap should be care-fully checked and adjusted and the plugsthoroughly cleaned.

All oil, grease, and dirt should frequentlybe wiped off the magnetor lead wires, and sparkplug insulators. Keeping these parbs clean andthe spark plugs properly adjusted will improvethe engine performance and at the same timewill prolong the life of the magneto"

MAGNETO COVERThe magneto cover, X6533, can be removed

by loosening the four screws, 5622, which holdit in place. When replacing the cover be surethat the cover gasket, 5618, is in its properplace.BREAKE R CONTACTS-REPLACEMENTAND ADJUSTMENT

The breaker contacts should be adjusted to.015r! when fully opened" To adjust the con-tacts, loosen the two clamp screws, 5900,enough so that the contact plate can be moved.

hsert the end of a smaLl screw driver inthe adjusting slotand open or close the contactsby moving the plate until the opening is .015?r,measuringwith afeeler gauge of that thickness,tighten the two clamp screws.

To replace the contacts remove the breaker,the spring clamp screw, 6017, the breaker armlock and washer, 3219, and 42L0, then lift the

breaker arm from its pivot.Remove the spacingwasher, 5717, and the two breaker plate clampscrews, 5900. The breaker plate can then beremoved.

If the contacts need replacing it is recom-mendedthat both the fixed contact and the break-er arm be replaced at the same time, using re-placement breaker set X5996.

After assembly the contacts should be ad-justed as described above. The contacts shouldbe kept clean at aLL times. Laequer thinner isan ideal cleaner for this purpose" Use WICOtool 5-5449, to adjust the alignment of the con-tacts so that both surfaces meet squarely.CONDENSER

To remove the condenser, X5614, firstdisconnect the condenser lead by removing thebreaker arm spring screw, 6017, then removethe two condenser clamp screws, 5411, and thecondenser clamp 5532" When replacing the con-denser make sure it is properly placed and thatthe clamp screws are securely tightened.COIL AND COIL CORE

The coil and coil core mustbe removedfrom the magneto housing as a unit. Disconnectthe primary wire from the breaker arm springterminal by removing screw, 6017, take out thetwo coil core clamp screws, 54J-1, and removethe clamps, 5633. The coil and core can thenbe pulled from the housing. When replacingthis group make sure that the bare primary wireis corurected under the core clamp screw and thatthe insulated wire is connected to the breakerarm spring terminal"REMOVAL OF COIL FROM CORE

The coil X5700, is held tight on the core,X5524, by two wedges, 10383. It will be neces-sary to p re s s against the coil core with con-siderable force to remove it from the coil. Thecoil shouldbe supported in such a way that thereis no danger of the primary of the coil beingpushed out of th.e secondary.
