8C • WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 2014 OMAHA WORLD-HERALD SPORTS BY STU POSPISIL WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER BLAIR, Neb. — Haley Thiele didn’t repeat history Tuesday as a girl winning a boys golf district championship, but the next-best thing was seeing the title go to Wahoo Neumann teammate John Kenney. “I couldn’t be happier for him,” Thiele said. “He’s been waiting for it all year. Finally he put it all together today.” With Thiele taking fourth with an 80 and her freshman sister, Hannah, finishing sixth with an 82, the Cavaliers won the team title by 20 strokes at River Wilds Golf Club and will be the first boys team to take more than one girl to the state tournament. Jameson Hittle, in eighth, was the fourth golfer in the top 10 for the Cavs. Joseph Furasek is their fifth golfer. Neumann does not field a girls golf team, which makes the Thie- les eligible to play on the boys team. Girls play from the same tees as the boys in high school tournaments. Kenney shot a career-best 77, 5 over par, including a 1-over 37 on the front nine. It was the junior’s second top-10 finish in districts in three years. He finished one stroke ahead of Dana Van Ostrand of Lincoln Christian. Kenney said he’s gotten better because of the Thieles. “It’s pretty humbling, getting beat by girls every day,” he said. Neumann coach Pat Sullivan said Hannah Thiele and Kenney “have made a big difference” for the Cavs. The team’s district score was 49 strokes better than last year, when it missed qualify- ing for state by one stroke. “Hannah has surprised me a bit. She’s shooting lower than I thought she would,” Sullivan said. “There’s not been much of a learn- ing curve for her.” Lincoln Christian and Milford also advanced to the Class C state tournament May 28 and 29 at Ma- honey Golf Course in Lincoln. “I think if we shoot as well as we can, everybody be a couple shots better, we can put ourselves in great position at state,” Haley Thiele said. “Our goal is to win the state championship.” Team scoring: Wahoo Neumann 322, Lincoln Christian 342, Milford 348, Lincoln Lutheran 360, Johnson County 378, Fre- mont Bergan 381, Om. BLAIR, Neb. — Haley Thieledidn’t repeat history Tuesday asa girl winning a boys golf districtchampionship, but the next-bestthing was seeing the title go toWahoo Neumann teammate JohnKenney.

“I couldn’t be happier for him,”Thiele said. “He’s been waitingfor it all year. Finally he put it alltogether today.”

With Thiele taking fourth withan 80 and her freshman sister,Hannah, finishing sixth with an 82,the Cavaliers won the team titleby 20 strokes at River Wilds GolfClub and will be the first boysteam to take more than one girl tothe state tournament.

Jameson Hittle, in eighth, wasthe fourth golfer in the top 10 forthe Cavs. Joseph Furasek is theirfifth golfer.

Neumann does not field a girlsgolf team, which makes the Thie-les eligible to play on the boysteam. Girls play from the sametees as the boys in high schooltournaments.

Kenney shot a career-best 77, 5over par, including a 1-over 37 onthe front nine. It was the junior’ssecond top-10 finish in districtsin three years. He finished onestroke ahead of Dana Van Ostrandof Lincoln Christian.

Kenney said he’s gotten betterbecause of the Thieles.

“It’s pretty humbling, gettingbeat by girls every day,” he said.

Neumann coach Pat Sullivansaid Hannah Thiele and Kenney“have made a big difference”for the Cavs. The team’s districtscore was 49 strokes better thanlast year, when it missed qualify-ing for state by one stroke.

“Hannah has surprised me abit. She’s shooting lower than Ithought she would,” Sullivan said.“There’s not been much of a learn-ing curve for her.”

Lincoln Christian and Milfordalso advanced to the Class C statetournament May 28 and 29 at Ma-honey Golf Course in Lincoln.

“I think if we shoot as well aswe can, everybody be a coupleshots better, we can put ourselvesin great position at state,” HaleyThiele said. “Our goal is to win thestate championship.”

Baseball coach Greg Beals says his Buckeyes areconfident heading into a matchup with NU after aHusker sweep in Lincoln earlier this season: “Wehad the lead and we were winning in all three of thoseballgames and all three of them slipped away. Whatwe take away from that is that we’re good enough toplay with Nebraska. The games that we played thereprove that.”
