Dear friendsThe sitting room was silent, little girls gone, dragging their overnight bags and awistful backwards glance at Ned, Perfect and Tippy. The horse, pony and dog linedup in size order. Ned being the only one who could see the Green, but would alwayspass the news of a happening outside, to the other two. Maggie Atkins the doll withred hair, sitting comfortably on Tippys back. Ned wearing a bright red ribbon in hismane, a pretty ribbon tied on by a little girl excited that it was Grandmas birthday, hanging round his neck a silver medallion, made at childrens Church denoting thatwe are all precious to God. The two little cousins should have two gold medals. Godwill make sure of that.

The fire was burning in the grate and Grandma was sitting enjoying the peace, whenshe heard the first crack. She wouldn’t have heard it if the little girls were still playing‘snap,’ ‘snap,’ made her jump. There it was again, a louder crack rising up throughthe chimney breast, then much cracking along the floors upstairs and into the ceilingbelow, her beloved polished floors, only last month she had been clearing up waterthat had come through the damaged chimney stack, pools of water lay in droplets onthe polished surfaces, running away between the floorboards. They looked likejewels. The noise in the chimney confirmed her worst fears, it was a chimney fire. The firefighters were wonderful, kind and helpful, one was in the middle of movingwhen he got the call, one was a personal trainer and the ski instructor was a girl, allretained firefighters, we have every right to be proud of our emergency services and Ihope they enjoyed the remainder of a tin of chocolate biscuits. Then they were goneand apart from the smell of soot, there was nothing to indicate they had been at theRectory.

It made us think what we would have rescued if we had a real life-threatening fire?Grandma knew she should answer ‘her Bible’, but you know the answer, it wouldhave been two rocking horses and a stuffed dog, because in them she sees hope, hope for the little girls, a resting place where they can dream, a refuge and a hug thatsays I can’t make it go away, but I can make it feel better.

That is what God offers us. Hope. In the midst of despair, hope.In the Bible it says: Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my saviour and my God. Psalm 42:5.As we look forward to Easter here lies our most important promises of hope.Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ we have freedom, freedom fromsin, fear, and death. Through his death we have life, in the Gospel of John chapter 10verse 10 it says, ’I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.’ He diedto save us, that all who believe in him will have eternal life, HE DIED FOR YOU.

The eldest grand daughter asked last week. ’Why do grandmas have the biggestand wettest face cloths,’ quickly followed by ‘how come they make the second bestroast potatoes.’ Second best we asked? ”First place goes to the Middle House inMayfield.” If you get a chance do go!

NOTICE OF MOTION – RETENTION OF OUR RURAL VILLAGES ANDCOUNTRYSIDE

On the 16th February, I submitted a Notice of Motion asking the Council to support anew Access Policy to be included in the Local Development Framework Core Strategy.Currently, the Council does not have a specific access policy in place. We have theopportunity of learning from mistakes made in the past and reinforcing from the outsetthe need to up-date key policies for access, particularly, on major developments.Such a policy would make a stronger case for resisting unacceptable, unrealisticproposals that compromise the quality and residential amenities of existingneighbourhoods and in particular, the retention of the existing character of rural villagesand our countryside.

The move toward localism will mean that communities can get far more involved indecisions on which they wish to see in their own neighbourhoods.Currently, the Inspector can change decisions made locally very easily, but hopefully, the new system will make it more difficult for an Inspector to over rule local decisions.

In the past, developers have gained planning permission on appeal. I t is mysubmission that the issue of access needs to be resolved ahead of any decision toselect housing land allocations and not when the planning permission is applied for. There are greenfield sites within the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessmentthat do not have reasonable access and I believe should not be allocated for majordevelopment. The town of Lewes has sustainable, brownfield sites that are appropriatefor future development and offer good access.

Many people in Chailey wish to retain the existing character of their village and do notwant mass over-development, but prefer small housing projects. We are consideringthe next 20 – 25 years. Now is the right time to put forward your thoughts andcomments to Lewes District Council: Edward Sheath, Planning Policy [email protected] Telephone: 01273 484410

As I write, I do not know whether fellow Councillors will support my Notice of Motion.I shall report the outcome.

Cllr. Sharon [email protected]: 01444 831336

We would like to thank our neighbours who all rallied around tohelp in every way, and a Special thanks to Matthew and his brother in law becausewithout them it would have been a lot worse.

Art Nouveau was a breath of fresh air after the solidstaidness of the Victorian age. Heavy ornate decorationsgave way to simplicity and purity of line. Artists worked oneverything from architecture to furniture design in the beliefthat art should be a part of everyday life. The lecturerAnthea Streeter is an expert on the subject and her talkentitled ‘Art Nouveau Architecture and Design’ will be wellillustrated by a digital representation. Come and enjoy!

Entrance £5 on the door for non-members with tea and biscuits afterwards. As weare half way through our programme it is now possible to become a member for halfprice. Over the last few weeks we have been looking atSuperheroes and Princesses. The children have usedfiction storybooks to develop their knowledge of how asuperhero helps others and how princesses live. Wespent many days dressing in various costumes; we created a bat cave and princesscastle with them to support their role-play giving them many hours of enjoyment.

We would like to thank everyone who came to our Open Day; it was lovely to see somany people. We took the opportunity to formally open the preschool’s new buildingand despite the weather were able to hold a small opening ceremony with thechildren indoors. Throughout the afternoon the children enjoyed creative activitieswhilst parents and carers chatted to staff, committee and existing parents, sharingtheir experiences.

If you were unable to visit us at our Open Day and would like to come and see us,please call Diane on 07852 986024 to arrange an appointment.

Chailey and District Horticultural SocietyWell here we are again, another gardening year on itsway. As I write, I have just walked the commons in glorioussunshine, with Rosie, my old Labrador. For the first timethis year I think I might be tempted to clear out therabbits, tackle the moles and venture into the jungle thatis my garden!Hopefully, other members are more dedicated and will have been working andpreparing their own plot, so that they will have plenty of entries for the show bench. The Spring Show is always a good time for those who are considering entering theshow for the first time, because all you need are narcissi (daffodils) growing in yourgarden......we have novice classes especially for you.....come and meet us, we arevery friendly and can help you if you are unsure of what to do.

Message from the Chairman

2010 was one of the best years for the Society in recent times. The Spring Show was surprisingly successful considering what a difficult winter wehad been through. In May we had a hugely successful plant sale outside the Horn’s Lodge and this willbe repeated in 2011.The Summer Show went very well with the introduction of a fun dog show, whichproved a great attraction and will become a permanent feature of the Summer Show. The Autumn Show was the least well attended but the number of entries held and thestandard was very high. The new committee members have proved to be of great benefit to the society ,withplenty of new ideas and lots of enthusiasm. We now have an excellent website full ofuseful information. We would like to encourage other local Societies to put up a stall at our shows tohelp make them real village events. Now is the time to plan for the new year so order your plants and seeds and goodgardening in 2011.

Please note the Horticultural Spring Show will be on 19th March 2011 at 2.30pm

Phew!

As Quizmaster, I would like to thank everyone for coming, and also thank all of ourhard-working committee members who ran the bar, prepared and served the food, and generally contributed to making it a successful event.

Four children, all ‘cellists attended a ‘County’ event at Wivelsfieldfor gifted and talented pupils. A feature of the school is the readi-ness to support charities and this year we are preparing to supportRed Nose Day. The infants have planned a history lesson whichwill take place at Lewes Castle.

I’ve lived in Chailey for only thirty five years but I do have a slightconnection with Lewes Castle. I don’t remember which centenary itwas but at the last one the council organised a photographiccompetition which I won. The transparency from which the print

was made was buried in a time capsule in the castle grounds to be dug up in ahundred years time. I don’t think the chairman of the council was much impressed byme when I volunteered to be the one who dug it up.

One of my responsibilities as a governor is to monitor literacy at the school. RecentlyI spoke to Dolphin class about story writing and told them one of my stories. Theyhave to write a piece, before half term, entitled ‘Myths’. I will see the work later. Notonly will this be a good English exercise but will be a test of the pupils’ imagination.

The threat to close public libraries is depressing. Children will have to rely on filmand television for their literary intake with all the distortions they turn out. Look at thehash the B.B.C. has made of “Lark Rise to Candleford” and not just with the storylines. In last Sunday’s episode, the delivery of 1880’s Oxfordshire country folks’dialogue was so unreal I half expected Elizabeth Bennet to walk into to Post Office.Thank goodness there is not to be another series.

We need to recruit another Community governor, if you think you might like to join usplease ‘phone the head teacher, Mrs. Morrow.
