We reached our monetary goal of $125,000 at just before 6 pm on the Friday night of the drive, and our 1,000th member on Saturday morning, one hour before the official end of the campaign.

All in all, we raised a little over $133,000 – more than $8,000 over our goal – with the help of 1,007 members, 70 of whom were new members. We are really pleased with those numbers!

Our congratulations to the winners of the Grand Prize, a trip to Spain with the WYSU tour group in May of 2019 – longtime supporters and friends Nancy and Richard Patnode of Lake Milton, Ohio!

Of course, we couldn’t have done any of this without the help of so many volunteers, staff, sponsors, and listeners who contributed their time, money and talents. We are proud that so many who enjoy and believe in public radio came together in support of one of this community’s most valuable assets, and we sincerely thank you for participating!

Exploring the world on your own can be exciting, but daunting. I’ve been traveling with groups for almost 20 years, and I’m convinced it provides many benefits! Here are some: You get to enjoy the experience with other intelligent, outgoing, and motivated

people just like yourself. Your flights, hotels, tour guides and itineraries are all expertly managed for

you, so that all you need to do is relax and enjoy your vacation. Because you don’t have to waste time and money figuring out how to get from one place to another, you see more on a tour, and usually hit all the highlights.

If something goes wrong – if you get sick, lose a credit card or your passport, for example – you’re not stranded. Others are always nearby to help.

There is always someone there who can understand the language and the customs. When you’re on your own, you’re REALLY on your own!

Traveling in a group gives you the best value for your money. Special flight rates and hotel rates given to groups provide significant savings.

There is a lot of flexibility with a group. You can have as much structured or individual time as you want.

The WYSU trip to Spain is filling up quickly for May 2 through May 15, 2019. The trip includes seven guided sightseeing tours with expert tour directors and local guides in a private deluxe Go Ahead motor coach. Highlights include Prado Museum, the Royal Palace, Seville Cathedral, the Alhambra, Costa del Sol, Barcelona, and much more.

88.5 WYSU Public File Now Online

A Public File is one of the ways public broadcasters maintain transparency and demonstrate their commitment to their listeners. It can contain dozens or even hundreds of documents that disclose a station’s political activity, fund raising efforts, broadcasting licenses, hiring activity, and a variety of other FCC-mandated materials. Until recently, only a hard copy was available to the public, but on March 1, the FCC mandated that public files must also be available online – not an easy task!

We are happy to report that after several months of reviewing, verifying, and reorganizing, WYSU was one of the first Ohio broadcasters to successfully upload its public file to the FCC repository at publicfiles.fcc.gov. This rich and accessible resource is a great way for interested members of the community to delve deeply into the “public” side of public radio, as well as make sure WYSU, or any public broadcaster, is maintaining a meaningful commitment to the public. You don’t have to take our word for it, though. Check it out yourself!

MAD ABOUT THE ARTS 2018 was a success and here

are a few reasons:

Broadcast technology has changed a great deal since the first radio stations of the 20th Century. From experimental AM broadcasts in the early 1900s to personalized audio delivery on smartphones today, no matter what technology is involved, radio remains one of the most ubiquitous and essential communication technologies ever devised. Earlier this year, WYSU took its next step in broadcast technology with the addition of Opus01 – a new tool to help improve service and maintain flexibility in an ever-changing and demanding industry.

So, what is Opus01? In “geek-speak,” Opus01 is a fully redundant, highly available virtualization cluster designed to run the majority of WYSU’s technology infrastructure. In plain English, Opus01 is a pair of really powerful computers that will house most of WYSU’s servers and software.

A couple of new computers might not seem like a big deal, but to WYSU, Opus01 represents the future of the station. There is no short list of benefits that it provides: it never needs to be turned off; it’s more energy efficient; maintenance is rare and less expensive; capacity is many magnitudes larger; performance is several magnitudes better; and the list goes on.

For WYSU, Opus01 is a giant step into the future – a future where we will continue to further our mission of providing always-on, world-class content to the public.
