ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD:

UKRAINIAN VILLAGELocated on the west side of Chicago, Ukrainian Village is a residential area that reflects the German, Polish and Ukrainian immigrants who settled in the area in the 1800s and early 1900s. Offering solid, Victorian-style homes, workers cottages and tidy redbrick two- and three-flats, Ukrainian Village is quickly becoming a popular destination for those seeking an alternative to Bucktown and Wicker Park.

Like much of Chicago, the area was originally farmland, until major settlement began in the area during the 19th century. Despite its name, the neighborhood was first settled by Polish and Slovak immigrants in the 1800s. However, when political refugees began to flee Europe during World War I, the neighborhood took on a distinctly Ukrainian identity, which remains today.

The community is served by the Chicago Public School system, with students attending Christopher Columbus Elementary school, and either Roberto Clemente or Wells Academy for high school. There are a number of private schools in the surrounding area, including: the LaSalle Language Academy, A.N. Pritzker Elementary, and Walter Payton College Prep. Both the Loop and O’Hare Airport are a quick commute from Ukrainian Village on the CTA’s Blue Line.

In addition to a new generation of residents, the neighborhood has also seen a number of trendy eateries, bars and boutiques pop up along Division Street, Chicago Avenue and Damen Avenue. With trendy Wicker Park nearby, residents also have immediate access to dozens of restaurants, eclectic shops and art galleries.
