ST. JOSEPH’S PAGE TWO

My Dear Brothers and Sisters, Over the past few weeks a number of you have asked me about our saying the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel at the end of our Sunday celebrations of Holy Mass. “Why,” and “What is it about?” seem to be the main questions. So, here’s the deal. In a conversation with a good friend of mine in a different diocese, we were sharing our reflections on parish ministry and what is going on in our parishes. We spoke of the growing crisis of suicides and overdoses and the attendant pain with them. Our state and our county prosecutor have done much to raise aware-ness of addiction and help that is available. In the course of our conversation, my friend told me that his parish has been pray-ing the St. Michael prayer for a number of years. I thought that, in light of the challenges we face in our world today, imple-menting this prayer would be beneficial. Since 1884, during Pope Leo XIII’s reign, the reciting of this prayer and other ‘Leonine” prayers was instituted and contin-ued until September 1964 when the obligation to say these prayers after Low Mass on Sundays was lifted. Some thirty years later, Pope St. John Paul II recommended its use, saying: "May prayer strengthen us for the spiritual battle that the Letter to the Ephesians speaks of: 'Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might' [Eph:6:10]. The Book of Revelation re-fers to this same battle, recalling before our eyes the image of St Michael the Archangel (cf.Rev 12:7). Pope Leo XIII certain-ly had this picture in mind when, at the end of the last century, he brought in, throughout the Church, a special prayer to St Michael: 'Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil...' Although this prayer is no longer recited at the end of Mass, I ask everyone not to forget it and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world.” I hope this sheds some light in answering your concerns. May God bless you all. Fr. Scott July 29/30

MENSAJE DEL PARROCO

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,

Padre Scott
