A special thank you to Demetri’s Restaurant in Deerfield for hosting monthly lunch outings for our Residents.

Welcome to the May issue of the Greek American Times. The Easter Season was filled with tradition, family and friends. We thank our spiritual leaders for coming and holding services for our Residents this Easter season. We would especially like to thank Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago for presiding over Holy Thursday Liturgy for our Residents, staff and volunteers. Another special thank you to Father Treantafeles for Saturday of Lazarus, Holy Unction, Service of the Unnailing (Apokathilosis) and Easter Sunday Vespers of Agape. Thank you to the Residents, volunteers and staff who helped in the preparation of the Epitafio and to Nick Pishos for donating all the beautiful flowers. It was a beautiful Easter Celebration. Another special thank you to Pamela Papakanelou for donating individual “tsourekia” for each of the Residents, and to Sweet Connection for donating tsourekia for our gift shop. We enjoyed visits from several different groups, including St.Haralambos, St.Constantine and Helen Parish, the Pan-Laconian Society, St.Demetrios of Elmhurst, and Ladies of Ahladokampos who came bearing sweets, and fruits for our Residents. The time we spent with you all was very memorable and we look forward to your future visits. We would also like to thank the Orphaeus Dance Troupe and the Cretan Youth of Chicago Dance Troupe that came and performed some Greek folklore dancing for our Residents. Keep up the great work! In May, we have many fun activities planned for our Residents and Families. First and foremost, we would like to invite everyone to join us at our Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon which is hosted by the Women’s Auxiliary. The luncheon will be held on Saturday, May, 10th 2014 at 11am. This event will be a time to spend with all the wonderful women in our lives and honor them and all the amazing things that they do for us year round. We hope to see everyone there! Some of the fun that we look forward to in May include, live entertainment with Noreen Delgado, a walk to Walgreens, an outing to the Dollar Tree and our 3rd Annual wine tasting outing at Lynfred Winery. We also have some indoor fun planned including a pizza party, and a apple pie social, as well as, a Cinco De Mayo party and a dog therapy visit. Make sure to check out the Life Enrichment Calendar so you can join in on some of the fun with your loved one! We hope that May will bring sunny skies and good weather so we can all start spending a little more time out on our beautiful patio. Happy May Everyone!! -The Life Enrichment Department

A Note From Therapy… Krystyna Orthwein’s Success Story Congratulations to our therapy patient of the month, Krystyna Orthwein! Ms. Orthwein started therapy as an inpatient at GARCC after a stroke left her unable to walk and care for herself. In fact, Ms. Orthwein initially was unable to move her left side at all. By the time she reached GARCC, she had regained some movement, but still could not control where she was moving her arm and leg. After 3 weeks of inpatient therapy at GARCC, Ms. Orthwein returned home able to walk with a cane and care for herself. She was so pleased with the progress she made as an inpatient that she returned to us for outpatient therapy the following week. She remained with the same therapists and continued to improve. Now she is doing housework and making meals – activities that would have been impossible just one month ago. And she is able to accomplish all these tasks at home safely without the use of her cane. We wish Ms. Orthwein continued success and good health for many years to come.

Hi Everyone! I am Ngosa Lumbwe Babaletskos and I have been with the Greek American for over 7 years as a nurse. I am very happy and honored to take over the role of the Assisted Director of Nursing and Clinical Manager. My work experience includes working as an aid many years ago in long term nursing then making my way up and becoming a cardiac nurse in the hospital setting. I plan on using my experience to help create an environment that is warm, welcoming, and fair for all. I also plan to do my absolute best to ensure that our wonderful Residents get nothing but the best and safest care they deserve. I am excited to be back here full time and look forward to continuing to grow with this great institution, and make the Greek American an even better place to be. FUN FACTS: Mother of 2 wonderful children, Theodosios (2yrs+) and Nerantzoula (1yr), who I cherish. Biggest BULLS fan out there Married for 4 1/2 years

Hello, My name is Mark Murphey. I am the new guy; your new Administrator. As I like to be out and about assessing the care and services of your loved one, I hope to continue to meet you and your Resident. All leadership and staff are here to serve you and the Residents who call the Greek American Rehabilitation and Care Centre “Home”. It’s a calling, and a privilege to serve; I like what I see specifically in terms of the daily interactions of Residents and staff! I have been facilitating the delivery of services in skilled and sub-acute care since 1979 working from a frame-work of having performed every job, in every department. I don't believe that organizations and the costumers they serve, like you, can actually communicate too much; share with me your concerns and compliments, and they will be promptly addressed, communicated and brought to closure. Together, we can move this great Greek American Rehabilitation and Care Centre in the direction of her true potential! Looking forward to seeing you; call me Mark, and take care. Mark Murphey

Happy spring! I am delighted to announce that April was an exciting month for us on the Memory Care Unit. We decorated the unit with flowers, Easter decorations, painted flower pots and flowers in which we will take a photo of each resident and place it in their room. We had live entertainment from John Boda and Jeannette Crosby which the residents enjoy very much. St. Haralambos Philoptochos joins us on the 1st Thursday of every month with their delicious homemade sweets. The Ascension of Our Lord visited us on the 28th for an afternoon Easter Social which was a lot of fun. Our theme for the monthly party this April was “Let’s Celebrate Spring,” where we sang along to live entertainment and as usual had some fantastic desserts. Our next Dementia Support Group is Saturday, May 17th at 10:30-12pm and everyone is welcome. I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday!

Memorial Day is approaching which will kick off the start of cookout season! Some alternative grilling options are Portobello mushroom burgers, vegetable

skewers, or even barbeque tofu sandwiches. Here is a recipe for grilled Portobello Mushrooms from www.allrecipes.com:

Ingredients: -3 Portobello mushrooms -1/4 cup canola oil -4 minced garlic cloves -4 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar -3 Tablespoons chopped onion Directions (Serves 3) 1. Clean mushrooms and remove stems and place mushroom caps on a plate with gills facing up. 2. Place on bun with cheese if desired. Enjoy
