SPORT
THE Hume Veterans Cy-cling Club celebrated its birth-day with its annual “Anniver-sary Handicap” last weekend.
Held at Dookie over the arduous 52km open race cir-cuit, taking in Mt Major, only a few keen riders were willing to tackle the difficult three lap circuit.
The club, which was set up in 1996, held its inaugu-ral race at Tatong in 1997 and moved to Dookie after a few years.
This year five groups set off with all riders hoping to take home the trophy.
First away was the lone limit rider, starting 10 minutes ahead of the chasing bunch and 22 minutes from the scratch boys.
Middle markers Fletcher, Grealy and Wohlers (9min) combined well together but it took them two and a half laps to reel in the 12 minute group.
The limit rider lost the race lead a kilometre later and seven riders headed for home with block in the rear view
mirror and scratch closing the gap at a fast pace of knots.
The final rise in the eleva-tion came with 3km to go and Stokes took the initiative and bolted to the front on the as-cent, catching the other riders by surprise.
They expected him to fall back to the bunch with some distance still to travel, but Stokes kept the pace on.
While the other riders were looking at each other as to who was going to chase the leader down, Stokes was clos-ing in on the finish line.
The rail line approached and the pace picked up with six riders in the sprint, but it was to be for the minor plac-ings as Stokes crossed the line for his first ever win and one that he’d been chasing since his commencement with the club more than 10 years ago.
O’Brien won the bunch sprint for second place with Grealy a very close third.
Davison took the fourth plac-ing with Wohlers and Fletcher coming home just a few metres
back for fifth and sixth.Scratch never got to block,
which left them to have their own sprint with Washington getting home in eighth.
Less than 30 seconds back scratch was led home by Strang to give him 11th and fastest time honors.
Results: 1 – Colin Stokes (12) 1.37.32 (31.99 kph); 2 – Stephen O’Brien (12); 3 – Bernie Grealy (9); 4 – Gra-ham Davison (12); 5 – Dave Wohlers (9); 6 – Max Fletcher (9); 7 – Chris Wilkins (22); 8 – Michael Washington (4); 9 – Simon Hall (4); 10 – Grant Pol-lard (4). Fastest time: Ian Strang (scr) 1.27.27 (35.68 kph).
Next club race is Sunday, March 16 – Glenrowan 61km handicap.
Race entries close on Fri-day, March 14 at 9pm with Bernie Grealy - phone (03) 5721 3799.
For membership details or information phone Simon Hall on 0448 533 322 or visit www.humeveterans.com.au for details.

WITH the local football seasons only weeks away, AFL North East Border is gearing up to launch Auskick participation with Footy Fren-zy events planned across the region.
Kicking off at the Wanga-ratta Indoor Sports and Aquat-ic Centre on Friday, March 14, the two-hour Footy Frenzy program includes an inflatable football playground for kids, music, footy giveaways and the opportunity for parents to register online for Auskick on the night.
AFL NEB football devel-opment manager Zac Guil-foyle said the program had everything young footballers could hope for.
“The Footy Frenzy events are interactive and engaging football activities where kids can take a specky, kick a goal, run the obstacle tunnel and take the vertical leap test,” he said.
The Footy Frenzy events run from 4-6pm and roll into the Benalla Basketball Stadium on Friday, March 21, and in the courtyard of The Cube in Wodonga on Friday, March 28.
“The Footy Frenzy events are free and our development staff will be on hand to dis-cuss entry points into Auskick and junior football across the region,” Guilfoyle said.
“This is a great opportu-nity for families to learn more about AFL participation pro-grams while the kids can play in a safe, supervised environ-ment.”
More information on the Footy Frenzy events is avail-able at www.aflneb.com.au or by contacting AFL NEB on 5722 1993.
