There’s an unexplainable bond that forms when you share a lane with someone, and a trust that
comes with cruising the curves of the Black Hills next to someone with the understand-ing that they’re enjoying the same magi-cal experience of the area’s energy that you are. When the folks you’re riding next to are new friends, famous folk, and legends, it tends to kick the ride into a whole other level of cool. Ergo, the Legends Ride!
For more than a decade, riders of all ilk have stepped up to help gather cash for wor-thy charities in the Black Hills and have a good time rubbing elbows with celebrities at the same time. The celebrity factor has gar-nered attention featured in countless print publications, online and newspapers as well as television shows like CMT, National Geographic Channel, the Tonight Show, FX Network and the Travel Channel. Past stars have included such notables as Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, actor R. Lee Ermey, Paul
Teutul from Orange County Choppers, the Ness family, Neal Schon from Jour-ney and many, many others. Recent-past participants, like actor Tom Berenger and Dee Snider, are both returning again this year because they understand the impor-tance of the fund raising, and, just maybe, because they like riding the Black Hills just as much as the rest of us, too. Twisted Sis-ter’s, Dee Snider, famous for his outgoing
and gregarious personality, will be leading the pack. Actor Tom Berenger, nominated for the Academy Award for Best Support-ing Actor for his portrayal of Staff Sergeant Bob Barnes in Platoon, is most recently known for the movie, American Dresser, a biker flick released last fall. But one of the fun things about the Legends Ride is that

you just never know who might show up, celebrity or otherwise. Those fun guys from History Channel’s, Count’s Kustoms, Shannon, Ryan and Horny Mike, will be in Dead-wood along with legendary moto-cross rider, Ricky Carmichael. Ricky is a former motocross racer known for his successful racing career in the early 2000s, having won the AMA Motocross Championship 450cc class seven times and the AMA
Supercross 450cc class five times. His unrivaled successes in the sport of motocross have given him the nick-name “The GOAT,” an acronym for Greatest of All Time. Together with all these celebrities (past and pres-ent), and with the help of all of you, the Legends Ride has donated nearly $750,000 to local charities. Which proves, once again, that motorcy-clists are generous philanthropists. One could even say, “Legendary.”

The Ives Brothers are motordrome performers who spend their days going round and round in circles for the delight of fans who appre-
ciate the special skill it takes to keep a motorcycle climbing the walls of a vertical board track to the very top edge. They make the laps so fast it’s dizzy-ing for those who watch but are still able to hand of swag and collect tips from those brave enough to reach out and offer the cash.
If you’ve never seen the Ives Brothers perform, then you certainly owe your self the pleasure of climbing the stairs to peer into the cylinder that houses their machines. Kyle, 24, and Cody, 27 have made these sideway rides thou-sands and thousands of times, having started when they were just kids. Friendly and personable, the brothers are genuinely nice guys who are happy to visit with everyone.
The Ives are set up at the CrossRoads and fire up their bikes three times a day to creep their way to the very top of the wooden track. Come check ‘em out!

The Buffalo Chip’s ubiquitous Rod “Woody” Wood-ruff loves to meet campers. He turns up everywhere at the Chip, so keep your eyes peeled for his smiling face and say hello. Also look for Woody in the pages of the Sturgis Rider Daily to win Chip merch. Each day there’s a differ-ent Woody caricature hidden in a photo of an event or loca-tion he especially recommends. The first three readers who report their find to the Chamber of Commerce/Rally Info Center at the Chip CrossRoads win a prize bag. Urban hands over guitar to fan during concert
what a peRFoRMaNce!
Born in New Zealand and reared in Australia, Keith Urban was 16 years old when he entered a talent contest on an Australian TV talent show. He didn’t win, but went on to
put out a self-titled album seven years later. Skip forward to last night at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip and here
stands a seasoned performer playing to an appreciative, biker-packed amphitheater in Sturgis, South Dakota. And he’s never played better!
Last night’s concert has been deemed one of the greatest con-certs to ever play on the Buffalo Chip stage. In addition to the perfection of the show, the 51-year-old consummate performer blew the collective minds of the crowd when, mid-concert, Urban politely wiped off his guitar, signed it, and handed it over to an autograph seeker in the crowd. Then he calmly grabbed another guitar and played on. If you weren’t there, you blew it big time!
Don’t make the same mistake Thursday when Toby Keith takes the stage!

When it comes to motor-s p o r t s ,
there are a lot of cross-over interests and many NASCAR fans are motorcyclists, but it’s fun to realize that your favorite NASCAR driver is a biker, too! Rusty Wallace, a NAS-CAR Hall of Famer and the ultimate nice guy, has joined the Buf-falo Chip to host the first ever Rusty Wal-lace Charity Ride going down this Wednesday and he’s invited you and some of his wild rac-ing buddies to help him kick it off.
Rod Woodruff, presi-dent of the Sturgis Buf-falo Chip, commented about the run after meeting Rusty in per-son. “We hit it off immediately, Rod shared. He’s always so gracious and charismatic. We decided to work together to create a
ride event that would ben-efit our favored charities, so this run will support SD Special Olympics-Rapid City Flame and the NAS-CAR Foundation Chari-ties, both very worthy causes so please ride out and join us.”
Come down to the Main Street Square in Rapid City to meet Rusty and his celebrity NASCAR driver friends and some of the top racing industry executives for a kick off party before riding with them along a scenic route that Rusty himself chose. Riders will arrive to an exclusive recep-tion at the Legendary Buf-falo Chip. This unforget-table, first-time experience supports SD Special Olym-pics-Rapid City Flame and the NASCAR Foundation charities.

Marjorie “Shadow” KleimanShadow-Light Media
Marjorie “Shadow” Kleiman has pride in her antique and not-so antique bikes. In fact, Shadow can talk bikes like no other, and write about them even better.
As the first female editor-in-chief at Thunder Press, Shadow worked hard to rise up in the ranks of moto-journalism and found that pur-suing her passions put her exactly where she needed to be: On the open roads.
She began riding in 1999 and hasn’t let the dust settle since.
She’s authentic, tough as nails, and gives her bikes a mean nickname. Meet Shadow and her bikes Elvira the Black Beauty, Badlands Betty, and so many more!
SRD: How long have you been riding?Shadow: I started in summer of 1999, about
20 years now. Over the years I’ve had friends that rode, and I actually used to have dreams about riding. They were so amazing that I’d wake up, realize it wasn’t reality, and I’d be so bummed out. It became something I really wanted to do! We could go into clichés about the open road and freedom, but basically, I wanted to be able to experience all the joys of motorcycling without having to depend on anyone else.
SRD: Favorite bike, and why?Shadow: Elvira the Black Beauty. She’s my
road monster. My first bike was a Sportster named Ruby, and my newest is a Road King named Badlands Betty. She got her name 2
Living the dreamshadow KLeiMaN
A Word from Assistant Editor Madeline Woodruff
This year, I was inspired to seek out and inter-view several incredible women bikers who’ve been out on the long and winding roads worldwide, kick-ing up dust on the racetracks, making history, and making a name for female bikers wherever they go. I wanted to celebrate them, these fearless women, and what they bring to the epics of motorcycling. I wasn’t disappointed. I’m forever inspired by these ladies on two wheels, and I’m excited to present this year’s Sturgis Rider Daily special, Inspiring Women Riders!
years ago on my way to Sturgis because her paint is the same colors as the sweeping grasslands.
SRD: What challenges have you faced as a woman rider?
Shadow: Being taken seri-ously, I would say. Respect. I walk into a bike shop with a guy and even if he doesn’t ride at all, the staff will still talk to him exclusively even though it’s my bike. A lot of guys don’t believe that women could possi-bly know anything mechanical or technical about bikes. Some-times it’s difficult to find good riding gear; I don’t believe in the pink it and shrink it M.O. As if women don’t need their gear to be as durable as men’s gear.
SRD: You have an interest in antique bikes, tell us about that.
Shadow: It’s like a treasure hunt. You’re basically keep-ing history alive! Everything is a piece of Americana, and there’s a lot of pride in restoring or finding these gems and taking care of them. It’s a whole different world, and one I enjoy very, very much.
SRD: You were the first female editor-in-chief at Thunder Press, can you tell us about that experience?
Shadow: I’ve been in the moto-journalism field for 17 years and I’ve worked with several different magazines, now I’m freelancing. I was the first female editor-in-chief
at Thunder Press. I had been a regional editor for 9 years and for 4 years before that I’d been a bureau chief and col-umnist. I think that my dependabil-ity really got me through. You can be skilled but if you blow deadlines consis-tently, you’re done. Being in moto-jour-nalism was the best vocation I ever had. I was happy and fulfilled, pursuing my passions. It became my whole life, and that was fine with me.
SRD: Do you have anything to say to women reading?
Shadow: You know, all the way through I’ve always sort of been drawn towards worlds that were predomi-
nantly male oriented. I’ve had faith challenges every step of the way, and I’ve had a lot of advocates and detractors. I’ve had to prove myself over and over again; my drive and passion just made me push through. I’m not here so everybody in the world can like me. I’m here so I can do what I choose to do.

Whatever ideas you’ve ever had
about what the Sturgis Rally
is needs to be eradicated and
approached with a clean slate. e Sturgis
experience doesn’t have to be expensive or
corporate or congested. Out past the grid-
lock and city grind where there’s plenty of
room to spread out and enjoy nature lays a
rally oasis established just for a particular
breed of party animal.
Camp Zero is where all the cool kids
congregate to exercise their inner child and
raise a little hell unchecked by judgmen-
tal types. It’s a place where cheapskates
can hang with like-minded dirt bags and
the wild parties are reminiscent of the days
when rally was really raw. ere’s no u y
stu or special treatment. Forget all about
that VIP stu . In other words: Camp Zero isn’t meant
for everyone. Crabby old folks who get their
panties in a wad are speci cally not invited,
but if you’re down with a little debauchery
and like playing in the dirt, then this is
your tribe! is is the o cial fun zone!
#Dumptruck and #Bradytildeath are
both known to loiter around, instigating
spontaneity with their friends.
You can belly up to the bar in an almost-
80-year old barn, take a free shower and
participate in unchecked anarchy. ere’s
plenty of space if you want to crash in a
tent, van or camper if you don’t have room
on the bike to pack a tent.
You can sleep in the dirt like an ani-
mal or rent an authentic, no-frills tipi with
room for you and up to ve of your friends,
or even more if you don’t care how many
pile up on your oor.
Want music in camp? Ya better bring
your own instrument
because nobody’s getting
paid to play, but if you
still wanna participate
in typical rally stu ,
then head right up the
road to the CrossRoads where
you can catch free stu like stunt shows,
concerts, bike shows and more.
We’ll be tearing it up in camp on Tues-
day with a full day of fun stu , kicking o
with the Gambler 500 Mini Bike Enduro-

When cruising around the Sturgis Buffalo Chip and venturing out beyond the beaten path a bit, you’re apt to stumble on a little enclave
that might surprise you. There’s a gathering there of women on wheels who seem to know how to enjoy life. It’s sort of a party within a party, but it’s exclusively for women. An unprecedented arrangement, to say the least.
In it’s third year at the Chip, the Wild Gypsy Tour is a gathering of women riders who come together to celebrate their passion for motorcycling and to bond over the expe-rience of a summer campout curated for women. Yes, a curated campout. There are tours and activities planned with the focus on creating a sort of sisterhood among the women who ride, or maybe just want to. The nearby Bonafide Foodtruck serves the gals from an all-natural menu and the ladies have all the comforts of home at their private little oasis.
On Tuesday morning you can meet these ladies during the bike show they are hosting. The Women & Wheels Bike Show is open to all ladies who want to enter their wheels and the public (yes, everyone) is invited to come check out the exhibition at the CrossRoads. It’s free to enter, free to attend, and free to ask the women more about their Wild Gypsy crew. wildgypsytour.com.
