Notes from Nadine It seems as if the weather is having a hard time making up its mind whether it is win-ter or spring. I am hop-ing for spring. I love the springtime because it is the season of new life. The trees and flowers begin bursting with leaves and blos-soms and the birds re-turn with their beautiful colors and sweet songs.

Hopefully, we can see a springtime revival in Delta Kappa Gamma. It seems as if we have gone through a winter season and it is time for a change. I know some chapters have initiated several new members during the last two years. I would encourage those chapters to share what they have done to accomplish this. A good place to do this would be at the state convention which is just around the corner (April 10-12). Please make plans to attend the State Convention. Our keynote speaker at the banquet on Saturday evening is

Dr. Donna-Faye Madhosingh who is our International representative from Cana-da. Our other keynote speakers are Dr. Jen-nifer Webb from Epsilon Chapter (right) and Elinor Etterling (below) from Alpha

Chapter. Jennifer will speak at the birthday luncheon. Elinor will speak at the fel-lowship breakfast on Sunday. If you have never heard these ladies speak, be prepared! For those who have heard them, you know we are definitely in for a treat. Please get your registration form sent

in and make your reservations with the hotel. When you call the Hilton Garden Inn, please use the code DKG to get your convention rate. REMINDER: Long dresses, hats and gloves are the attire for the Saturday night banquet if you would like. This is optional, not mandatory. This would be a good way to help “SPICE UP YOUR LIFE.” -Nadine Horner, Delta State President

You can access the guidelines and the application for the award on the Delta State web site at dkgmis-souri.com. After the committee re-ceives the information, an email will be sent to acknowledge receipt of the application. Receipt of the award is a nice compliment for your chapter, and working toward it just makes your chapter better. We hope every chapter will give it a try!! -Caryl Feiler, Committee Member

Bylaws The Bylaws/Standing Rules Com-mittee has completed work on the proposed Delta State Bylaws/Standing Rules for the upcoming convention. There are currently 20 Chapters with approved Chapter Rules on file with Delta State. WANTED! More Chapter Rules to review prior to June 1, 2015. If you are unsure of your Chapter’s status please forward an electronic version of your Chapter Rules for verifica-tion by the committee to [email protected]. -Sharon Jones, Chair

Professional Affairs The 2015 focus for the Professional Affairs Committee is to encourage each Delta State chapter to submit a member’s name for the Key Woman Educator Recognition Award (formerly known as the Excellence in Education Award). One member from each chapter is eligible to be

recognized at the 2015 state conven-tion. The form was updated last year and can be found on the Delta State website. The absolute due date (no exceptions) will be March 1, 2015. Please recognize one of your worthy members. The committee will provide a work-shop at the State Convention for those who are interested in current legislative issues pertaining to educa-tion. We invite all of you to attend! -Evelyn Burton, Committee Member

Leadership Development Plans are already in motion for the Delta State Convention to be held April 10-12 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Independence. We are looking forward to another successful gather-ing similar to the Area Conferences last year. The President, Nadine Horner, has identified this year’s theme, “Spice Up Your Life”. Begin now to en-courage your members to attend and bring ideas so that each chapter will leave with renewed purpose to “Spice Up” their chapter meetings. Stay tuned for special requests for participation and donations needed for the State Convention. Many chapter presidents have been notified of opportunities to share and have pledged their support. That’s the Delta State Spirit. Another exciting activity that is “in the works” is the Leadership Semi-nar that will be held in the Retired Teachers’ Building in Jefferson City. Please mark your calendars for Sat-urday, June 27, 2015. Spread the word. The presenter is teacher and author, Dr. Lulu Lopez. You don’t want to miss this opportunity. Plan to attend and encourage your fellow chapter members to attend also. REMINDER: “An effective leader has: the drive to achieve results the ability to take the initiative

skills in collaboration and team-work.”- Daniel Coleman

Membership What is a Successful Chapter? Successful chapters have quick-moving, well organized business meetings with relevant programs. They meet for about an hour and a half, excluding any meals. They seem to have more meetings that are not meals, just refreshments. Each meeting incorporates fellowship time. Chapters meet at various times and days so that most members can attend a meeting. They communi-

cate in a variety of ways, such as phone, newsletters, emails, websites, etc. They have a chapter strategic action plan that has a membership component. They have initiation and orientation. They offer benefits that members can’t get elsewhere, such as chapter grants and scholar-ships. Most importantly, they em-phasize the mission and purposes of our society. (Information from “A Model of Successful Chapter Practic-es” from the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Membership Committee Website.) How to Increase and Maintain Membership 1. Invite non-members to a meeting

with an exceptional program. 2. Invite prospective members to a

Christmas Tea 3. Talk about the benefits of DKG

in the workplace. 4. Contact former members and ask

them to come to a meeting. 5. Contact members that miss a

meeting. Let them know they were missed.

6. Recognize Key Women Educa-tors that are members and non-

Committees (cont.) members.

7. Give a Recruitment Grant and check on the progress of recipient.

8. Have service projects. Some projects may be a one-time event, others may be ongoing.

9. Look for members from an environ-ment not currently represented in the chapter.

10. Use S.E.E. (Supporting Early-career Educators) or T.H.A.T. (Teachers Helping Another Teacher) to look for prospective members.

Winter weather can be unbearable for children who lack warm coats, hats and mittens. Each November,

the Theta Chapter collects new and gently used winter wear to distribute to local school districts for children who may not have warm cloth-ing. Approximately 70 items were collected this year. Theta Chapter members pictured are left to right:

The P’s and I’s of Planning Programs and Projects All chapters are involved in planning events, meetings, and projects. Engagement in significant projects and developing interesting programs are all important to attracting and retaining members. New members want to be engaged in activities that provide helpful information or contributions to education and society. So planning programs and projects is essential to the life of a healthy chapter. These

P’s and I’s should help you to develop projects and programs to energize your chapter and provide support for your schools and community.

Plan, Promote, and Participate

Plan ahead! Though it sounds sim-ple in our fast-paced world, this is

often difficult. One task follows an-other and then we wonder where all the time has gone. However, plan-ning ahead allows you to contact speakers, members, and others so they can fit the event into their schedules. It also allows you to ad-vertise events and encourage partici-pation. Planning allows all other things to follow. Meticulous planning will enable every-

thing a man does to appear spontane-

ous. - Mark Caine

Promote your projects and events.

People do not receive information in the same way, some prefer to read, others prefer to hear, some ignore email and some read every message in their in box, so use a variety of formats. Print information in your newsletter. Place on your chapter website. Send out an email to mem-bers. Announce at a meeting or have a program about the project. Also, once is probably not enough to make an announcement.

No true and permanent fame can be

founded except in labors which promote

the happiness of mankind. - Charles Sumner

Participate in as many chapter ac-tivities as you can. While there relax and smile, even if you are the person who is responsible for the event. Not everything will go as planned, but as you smile and enjoy the fellowship, you and others around you will ben-efit. Providing opportunities for members to fellowship and get to know each other may increase reten-tion of members. Allowing for some social time at meetings or other get-to-gethers can develop a feeling of community.

Let each person do his or her part. If

one citizen is unwilling to participate,

all of us are going to suffer. For the

American idea, though it is shared by

all of us, is realized in each one of us. - Barbara Jordan

Inform, Involve, Invite

Inform, inform, inform. In today’s

world with so many competing activ-ities and ever present technology, we have to present information several times. Once in a newsletter may not be enough to notify chapter members of an upcoming special event. You may need to repeat it. Use technolo-gy and social media to gather infor-mation, promote programs, and in-form members of events. Also, try to share activities and events with members after the event. Have someone take photographs, so these can be used on web sites and Face-book to share the work of the chap-ter. I can promise you that women working

together - linked, informed and educat-

ed - can bring peace and prosperity to

this forsaken planet. - Isabell Allende

Involve more people. It is easy to

fall into the trap of working last mi-nute and feeling that you can’t dele-gate work because you don’t want to call at midnight and ask for a volun-teer. So you find yourself working late and finishing everything your-self. There is an old adage, “Many hands make light work.” How true

this is! Involving more members al-lows for others to feel ownership and encourages them to participate in events. Remember, too, that activi-ties and projects do not have to be involved or difficult. Simple and easy helps more members to be in-volved. For example, a food drive where members bring a canned food item to a meeting doesn’t take much time or many volunteers and can be a tremendous help to a local food pantry.

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I

remember. Involve me and I learn. - Benjamin Franklin

Invite members to share ideas, tal-ents, and hobbies. Reach out to chapter members to learn about their talents, interests, and hobbies. You

will be surprised at the diversity. You can use this information as a resource when you need a program, help brainstorming ideas, or simply want a guiding hand. Also, chapter members know others and may be able to link you to a community re-source or the person who can be a speaker for a meeting, another aspect of inviting is to include potential members. They can see firsthand what our society does and feel the genuine fellowship and caring. Who knows they may become members. If you have the opportunity to do amaz-

ing things in your life, I strongly en-

courage you to invite someone to join

you. - Simon Sinek

Any time women come together with a

collective intention, it's a powerful

thing. Whether it's sitting down mak-

ing a quilt, in a kitchen preparing a

meal, in a club reading the same book,

or around the table playing cards, or

planning a birthday party, when wom-

en come together with a collective inten-

tion, magic happens. - Phylicia Rashad
