IMPORTANT INFORMATION Inclement weather cancellations: If the Fort Osage School District is closed due to weather, all
Community and Adult Education classes will also be cancelled and/or rescheduled. Reports of
school closings will be broadcast by 3:15 pm on local TV and radio stations and on the district’s
website. Do not expect phone calls.
Schedule Change: Class minimums must be met before the class will be held. Tuition must be
paid two weeks before the start date.
Refunds: Refunds will not be given after the first night of class. See page 14 of the brochure for
more detailed refund policies.

These credentials are the basic requirements for employment or membership in most urban and rural paid or volunteer fire service organizations.
Our program has been preparing students to enter these career fields since 1994. Our qualified instructors are all career firefighters, paramedics or EMT’s. Prerequisites: Students must be 18 years of age. Students must provide a high school diploma or GED, valid Missouri drivers license and current TB test before the start of class. Students will be required to have a clean background check.

Medical Coding
Take your first step toward a career as a medical coder! In this course you'll learn how to use the CPT manual and the ICD-10-CM to find medical codes for any disease, condition, treatment, or surgical procedure. This knowledge will prepare you to work almost anywhere in the medical field—doctors' offices, clinics, public health facilities, hospitals, or even the comfort of your own home.

This course is designed to meet the state requirements for becoming a CNA. The course includes 75 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of clinical instruction*. Clinical times may vary. Textbook and CPR testing fee included in tuition. Students are responsible for a small supply list, including uniform scrubs in solid colors.
Prerequisites:
Students must be 18 years of age.
A clean background check and registration with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Family Care Safety. This will be completed the first night of class, student must bring a credit/debit card to pay the $13.25 fee online.
A Tuberculosis (TB) skin test within the last 12 months.

Gardening Courses Art in the Garden Almost anything can be art…it’s in the eye of the beholder! You will learn that art could consist of discarded tools, lumber, iron, water, stone, a butterfly feeding station. Mass plantings in arches, circles, or other shapes can provide fun, beauty, and character to your garden.

Butterfly Gardening Butterflies are pollinators and play an incredibly vital role in the food industry; however, their populations are declining. We need to learn how to sustain their populations. Let’s start with recognizing their needs, and identifying what plants attract them.

Container Gardening Space does not have to limit your gardening. Containers of all sizes, sorts, and shapes can be used anywhere for your foliage and flowering plants, and vegetables. We will learn various plant requirements that are a must for success.

Lu Tarr became a Master Gardener in 2010. Her volunteer efforts include Speakers Bureau, Kansas City FL&G Show, Garden ‘n Grow, the Master Gardener Hotline, and various children’s education programs. Lu enjoys the outdoors as much as she can while working several part-time jobs as a floral designer, a farm tour guide, orchard supervisor, and a plant specialist at a garden center. She also enjoys working with the public while incorporating nature and gardening into everyone’s lives. She is always working in her yard and is constantly updating her landscaping. Lu also enjoys volunteering in the local 4-H program teaching Horticulture.

Language Courses Beginning Sign Language
Learn all about the art of sign language. You will learn vocabulary, practice signing, and reception skills with sentences, questions, dialogues, and games. You will also learn about American Sign Language features, finger spelling, and facts about deaf culture.

Advanced Sign Language
Now that you have mastered beginning sign language, it’s time to build your skills! This class is for anyone who has taken Beginning Sign Language with us or those who have a basic knowledge. There will be a different topic each week based on signs you’d find in everyday life, each lesson will be filled with vocabulary, sentences, narratives, and dialogues. You’ll have tons of practice to learn the language!

Couples Wellness Massage
Bring your significant other to safely and comfortably learn how to use massage techniques to help improve your health! Couples will learn therapeutic touch and how to massage stress away using techniques to melt muscle tension. Students will also learn full body massage and ways to adapt their homes into a convenient “get-away”! Please wear comfortable clothes.

Discovering Essential Oils
We have designed this introductory class as a fun and educational look into the history, products, and benefits of oils as well as how to use them topically, aromatically, and internally. Students will learn what carrier oils to use, how the vitaflex techniques are used, and the most popular everyday oils and uses for each. Students will also have the opportunity to get a zyto-scan to learn what oils would benefit them most. ($20 payable to instructor for scan).

Scrapbooking Basics Students in this class will learn basic scrapbooking design and techniques. A two-page layout will be made during each class session and each session will build upon skill previously learned. Stamping techniques will also be incorporated into this class. Students will need to bring a 12 inch paper cutter and the adhesive of their choice.

Special Interest Courses Cardmaking 101 The price of purchasing retail greeting cards has become outrageous! Come to this class and learn how to create beautiful greeting cards at a fraction of the price. Students will create 10 cards using a variety of techniques and need to bring their adhesive of choice.

The Joy of Outdoor Cooking
This class explores the world of outdoor cooking with friends and family. The art of old fashioned outdoor cooking including open fire, wood coals, charcoal, and modern technology is discussed. Methods taught will include dutch ovens, natural husks, foil dinners and more! Everyone is encouraged to share their experiences and recipes!

Intermediate Crochet
Do you already know how to crochet? This class picks up where Crochet Made Easy ends! Skills such as working in the round, foundation row special stitches, and advanced stitches will be taught along with a project of your choosing. Required materials for this class are: one skein of yarn in a solid, light color and a crochet hook size I-9 or J-10 for practice and those suitable for a project of your choosing.

THINGS TO KNOW
Enrollment Policy: Each class needs a minimum enrollment. If this minimum is not met one week prior to the start date, the class may be cancelled and you will be eligible for a full refund. All students will be notified by phone if a cancellation is made due to enrollment. The Fire/EMT Academy courses are subject to a background screening and admittance will be based on a clean background check. Completion Certificate: Completion certificates will be awarded for those students maintaining an 80% attendance record. FERPA Disclosure to Parents: When a student turns 18 years old or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, all rights afforded to parents under FERPA transfer to the student. Fort Osage Adult Education allows students to sign a waiver authorizing parents access to their progress and payment history. Otherwise, all student information MUST be obtained by the parent from the student as it is our legal obligation under FERPA to protect this information. Discounts: Discounts accepted only after class has met minimum enrollment requirements. Free tuition for Fort Osage employees taking job related/approved courses, 15% discount for Fort Osage employees, 5% discount for immediate family members of Fort Osage Employees, 15% discount for senior citizens. Discounts DO NOT apply to online courses.
REFUND POLICY In all situations where a class has been cancelled due to lack of adequate enrollment, a student will receive a full refund. If a student contacts the Adult Education office by the deadline: two weeks prior to the first session of the certification courses (below) or one week prior to the non-certified courses, a full refund will be granted. Students are responsible for the risk of changes in personal affairs or health. If you are unable to attend, you may send a friend or family member. Just call the office with their name prior to the start of the class. If a refund is requested following the deadline of a certification course only, the registration fees will not be refunded including days of attendance. See additional information regarding certification course refunds below. POLICIES No tobacco products are allowed in the CTC building – Smoking outside will ONLY be allowed a minimum of 50 feet away from the front entrances/doorways. Smoking areas should be in the student’s/staff member’s vehicle or the north end of the building by the sidewalk/gravel area. Violation of this rule will result in a written warning the first time followed by dismissal on a second occurrence. Students will be removed IMMEDIATELY from the course if caught smoking inside the CTC building. No refunds will be given if removed due to rules violations or disciplinary matters. Alcohol and drug use is strictly prohibited on district property and will result in immediate dismissal with no refund. Disruptive/demeaning, obscene, vulgar or threatening language or conduct is prohibited. This includes the use of hate language to demean other persons due to race, gender, disability, natural origin or religious beliefs. This provision also includes conduct, verbal, written or symbolic speech which materially and substantially disrupts class. Theft or Vandalism - Actions will result in legal consequences in addition to removal from course without refund of tuition or certification. Inappropriate Use of Technology/Equipment Use of any technology or equipment in an inappropriate way may result in immediate dismissal from the course. All students are encouraged to share ANY of their concerns in regards to the course, classroom/lab areas, instructor(s), adult education staff or building in general with Susie Gouldsmith. Mrs. Gouldsmith may request the concern in writing. All concerns will be investigated and dealt with in a prompt manner. Please note, this is an adult education course and the adult education staff can/will only discuss class or student matters with the student and not the parent (s), grandparent (s), spouse, girlfriend/boyfriend, cousin, aunt/uncle, etc. The student’s records and participation in the course are protected by the law and will not be discussed without the presence and permission of the student. No refunds will be given if removed due to rules violations or disciplinary matters.
