To meet the need for more suitable evaluation procedures, this system ofassessment provides a means of looking at the whole child. A parent or themost knowledgeable adult responsible for the child is interviewed about thechild's nonacademic behavior and ability to function in everyday life.Information about significant health problems since the child's birth isrecorded and scored, as well as basic facts about family characteristicsand family influence on the child. Additionally, the child takes a mental .

ability test, a test of perceptual maturity, a vision examination, a

hearing test, and a special test of physical dexterity. SOMPA thereforegives a measure of cognitive abilities, sensory -motor abilities* andadaptive behavior, yielding an estimate of the child's learning pottntial.SOMPA provides the school or agency with a basis for reaching soundedudiational decisions which take sociocultural and health and physicalfactors into account.
