Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise Page | 1 Hi All, well Tuesdays meeting was an interesting one in that it was all over the shop, but we got through it in the end and it was an amazing morning. We started a bit out of sequence due to the efficiency of our chefs who had brekky ready at the start of the meeting so we got straight into that while the food was warm and proceeded with the meeting as per normal. This threw me a bit as I had an AGM to squeeze into the hour as well as a speaker. So we got the AGM underway, and I do believe I set a club record in getting through it in 2 minutes. Minutes were approved, financials were approved and the Board announced….congratulations to all who are on the Board for next year (some new and some recycled). It was then our guest speaker’s turn so Milton Lewis from the Rotary Club of Campbelltown took us through a presentation on RAM (Rotarians Against Malaria) a program for which he is District 9520’s representative. It is an interesting program which we have supported in the past and likely to support in the not too distant future. Milton took us through the disease and informed us that it is caused by a parasite that is transferred from human to human by the bite of an Anopheles mosquito. We then heard how he had unknowingly contracted malaria in Papua New Guinea, how the disease which had remained dormant in his liver only to activate on two occasions back in Adelaide, at most inconvenient times: 1. During his honeymoon 2. During an exam (he still passed without answering a question??) We heard how the disease affects communities such as in PNG and how the program has benefited these regions by donating treated bed nets, distributing the nets, supplying boats and insecticide spray equipment by paid employees. This approach has reduced the incident rate in New Guinea by 80% since its inception by the Brookvale Rotary club in 1990. An amazing program, so thank you Milton for your presentation. Stand in Sergeant Mina conducted our game of heads and tails at short notice which was won by Bronny and duly fined all of us for being a rowdy bunch…..not us…..hehehehe!! We have a busy weekend this week with the Shed BBQ and our voluntary help at the YAC skating events on Saturday. Thanks to all those helping out and I will see you next Tuesday. GREG

Hi All, well Tuesdays meeting was an interesting one in that it was all over the shop, but we got through it in

the end and it was an amazing morning. We started a bit out of sequence due to the efficiency of our chefs

who had brekky ready at the start of the meeting so we got straight into that while the food was warm and

proceeded with the meeting as per normal. This threw me a bit as I had an AGM to squeeze into the hour as

well as a speaker. So we got the AGM underway, and I do believe I set a club record in getting through it in 2

minutes. Minutes were approved, financials were approved and the Board announced….congratulations to

all who are on the Board for next year (some new and some recycled).

It was then our guest speaker’s turn so Milton Lewis from the Rotary Club of Campbelltown took us through

a presentation on RAM (Rotarians Against Malaria) a program for which he is District 9520’s representative.

It is an interesting program which we have supported in the past and likely to support in the not too distant

future. Milton took us through the disease and informed us that it is caused by a parasite that is transferred

from human to human by the bite of an Anopheles mosquito. We then heard how he had unknowingly

contracted malaria in Papua New Guinea, how the disease which had remained dormant in his liver only to

activate on two occasions back in Adelaide, at most inconvenient times:

1. During his honeymoon

2. During an exam (he still passed without answering a question??)

We heard how the disease affects communities such as in PNG and how the program has benefited these

regions by donating treated bed nets, distributing the nets, supplying boats and insecticide spray equipment

by paid employees. This approach has reduced the incident rate in New Guinea by 80% since its inception by

the Brookvale Rotary club in 1990. An amazing program, so thank you Milton for your presentation.

Stand in Sergeant Mina conducted our game of heads and tails at short notice which was won by Bronny

and duly fined all of us for being a rowdy bunch…..not us…..hehehehe!!

Wayne Ng (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards [RYLA] 2012) has been awarded a scholarship for

research into employment trends in the manufacturing sector as part of a Bachelor of Business

(Honours) study through UniSA.

Rachael Ings (RYLA 2011) couldn’t make it to the recent ‘youth’ breakfast meeting but

dropped us the following note:

RYLA was a great experience. I was invited to this year's RYLA camp to assist with the supper

following the orienteering events. I also visited the awardees the following day and participated

in an ethics discussion. I look forward to applying to be a leader for RYPEN 2013, and possibly

RYLA 2013 and 2014. It is a great opportunity for anyone that goes.

Caitlin Gleeson-Pongrac (National Youth Science Forum [NYSF] & Health of the River Forum)

received her year 12 results with an ATAR of 96.45, including a Merit award in Biology, and so

will get to attend Government House to receive her award.

From Caitlin – “I would like to thank Magill Sunrise for their support in my attendance at the

NYSF which provided me with many tips for surviving year 12 and contributed to

me receiving this score.”

From Tracey (Caitlin’s Mum) – “Many thanks to Magill Rotary, for all of their support during her

secondary schooling & the opportunity to attend both the River Health Conference & the NYSF.

These have helped her to pursue and develop her passion for science.”

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of a worthy enterprise and in particular to encourage and foster

The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by every Rotarian of their occupation as an opportunity to serve

society.

The application of the ideal service by every Rotarian to their personal, business and community life.

The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

The Four Way Test of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth? Is it Fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

For good food, good fellowship And the opportunity to serve through Rotary

…we give thanks.
