The next meeting of the G.R.E.A.T. Group will be on Monday, February 3, at 12:00 noon in the Parish Hall. This month, Rick and Sharon Farr will talk about their trip to the Holy Land and the amazingly wonderful experiences they had. Please bring a dish to add to our pot luck luncheon that will be shared by all.

SOUPER

BOWL

SUNDAY

On Sunday, Feb. 2, millions of Americans will tune in to the Super Bowl football game. There will be parties with abundant food, friendship and fellowship. At the same time, there will be people worrying about stay-ing warm, finding shelter and a warm meal. Please join young people around the country as they demon-strate God’s love by loving their neighbors through the Souper Bowl of Caring. Just bring your canned or packaged food donation to the church on Super Bowl Sunday and place them in the hutch in the entryway. The food will be taken to the food bank and distribut-ed to those in need. It’s a simple, yet significant act of caring for others.

Cards for Kara Kara Uhrich, Good Shepherd’s Children Ministry Leader for more than two decades, is re-tiring. Please consider writing Kara a personal letter/card re-garding some of your favorite memories with her in the church. Events she has coordinated, reli-gious education she has shared with your children or your God blessed friendship that you both share. Children are encouraged to write as well and/or draw Kara a picture. All will be collected in a box in the narthex titled, “Cards for Kara”. Let’s come together to give Kara our love, thank-fulness and blessings as she embarks on a brand new adventure with the Lord. Cards will be deliv-ered to Kara on Feb. 2. For questions, please feel free to contact Dana Shrock at [email protected]. Thank you.

Sunday March 15 to Sunday March 22 NEEDS YOU

Church of the Good Shepherd’s volunteer coverage of the Winter Hospitality Overflow (WHO) shelter at Saint Andrew Lutheran Church, 5607 NE Gehr Road this year will be during the week of March 15th, start-ing on Sunday evening thru Sunday morning, on March 22nd. This is Good Shepherd’s 17th year of volunteering with the WHO program. In recent years, the shelters have experienced a steady increase of guests with children. The consistently high number of guests compels a need for maximum volunteer support, especially shifts with meals, chore duties, guest social time and bed as-signment or storage. It will be extremely important that both the 6-10 pm evening and 6-9 am morning shifts are fully staffed with 5 volunteers each. There is also a requirement of at least one adult male per shift. There are some changes in shifts available for us from past years as the Share organization has some paid staff now working the overnight shifts during the weekdays. The volunteer staffing sign-up sheet will reflect these changes. The sheet will be on a clipboard in the church entry in the coming weeks. The toughest shift to fill is the last shift in the morning since many people have to work. So if you can, please volunteer for this shift. Re-member, this is not necessarily a week long commitment. You need only volunteer for one day/shift or as many as you wish. Along with the sign-up sheet is a brief description of responsibilities for each shift as well as small self reminder slips for days and times you’ve scheduled yourself for. We also need you to fill out a criminal back-ground form found at the back of the clipboard. This requirement started a few years ago, is confidential and if you already have one on file with the church, no need to fill out another. WHO Lead is Dan Benge and for any questions can be contacted at [email protected] or 918-605-3000.

Lent Begins Wednesday, February 26 Lent is a time for reflection, quiet prayer and consider-ation of how to live out God’s plan in our lives. It is a time when we look at the past and consider the future. For many of us, individually, Lent means subtraction and addition. We try to subtract some of the distrac-tions in our life and we try to add disciplines that help us become more centered in Christ. If you are in need of assistance in preparing for a Lenten discipline, Please speak with Father Tom. Two Ash Wednesday Services - February 26

At noon and at 7:00 pm on Ash Wednesday there will be Holy Eucharist and the imposition of ashes, special music of the season and a sermon. Childcare will be offered at the 7:00 pm service. Begin your Lenten jour-ney and commit yourself to a holy and reflective Lent. “Ashes to Go” will be offered from 4 to 5pm on Ells-

worth Road in front of the church. If you don’t have the time to spare but want to observe Lent, this quick way of getting ashes is about bringing spirit, belief and belonging out from behind church doors and into the places where we go everyday. Although the “to go” way is simple, there is a deeper meaning, drawing on centuries of tradition and worship to provide busy peo-ple a contemporary moment of grace.

The Great Vigil of Easter

Baptisms

Holy Baptism will be celebrated on Holy Sat-urday, April 11. Baptism preparation classes will be held at 10:00 am on March 15, 22 and 29. If you are interested in baptism for yourself or a

child, please sign up on the sheet in the entryway or talk to Fr. Tom.

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER

The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 25 (from 5:00PM to 7:00PM in the parish hall), is fast approaching and the Good Shepherd men and acolytes, under Frank Lopez’s leadership, are mobilizing for this annual tradition in the life of our parish. If you would like to help Frank and his team out, please see Frank or contact him at 314-4898, [email protected], or the church office or sign up on the sheet in the church entry. We could really use the extra help in order to make this a special occasion.

WHY ARE WE EATING PANCAKES FOR DINNER ON FEBRUARY 5 FROM 5-7? Shrove Tuesday is the name for the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the first day of Lent. It was originally named for the “shriving,” or con-fession and absolution of the faithful on that day, but over time it also became associ-ated with Fat Tuesday and the celebration of the Mardi Gras and other carnivals. The tradition of pancakes, bacon, and sausages was started as a way of using up all of the tempting ingredients in one’s pantry prior to the beginning of Lenten fasting and oth-er disciplines. Today it continues to be a day set aside for great celebration, feasting and carnivals.

So, don your carnival attire and plan to join us as we feast on pancakes and sausages, celebrate, and enjoy the fellowship of one another prior to the beginning of our Len-ten Journey. The all-you-can-eat menu includes pancakes and syrup, sausage, apple sauce, juice, coffee, tea and milk. Gluten free pancakes and sugar free syrup will be available. The cost for adults is $2, the cost for children 6-12 is $1 and children under 5 are Free. The maximum cost for any family is $7.

January Montessori School Ministry News

Christmas Appeal Update Once again, the good people of Good Shepherd put their school ministry on their Christmas list. This year’s appeal raised $4,632. This is an amazing blessing for the families who will be awarded scholarships next year. On behalf of the school board, school staff and 2020-2021 future scholarship recipients, thank you. Our minis-try is very grateful to the Church of the Good Shepherd patrons who consider early childhood education a vital outreach ministry. The children who are able to attend the school are better prepared to face the next journey into elementary and beyond. As we look ahead to the future of our school there are endless possibilities to reach out to our Clark County families who are looking for a special place for their child. It is our prayer that in the future we can expand in order to offer more families hope and an opportunity for their children to expe-rience quality education and spiritual formation. Annual Public School Open House Our annual open house for the community is planned for Saturday, Feb. 1st, from 11:00-1:00. This is an opportunity for interested parents and grand-parents to visit our school; wander through the classrooms to see the beauti-fully prepared learning environments, visit with our wonderful staff and speak with the school director. If you have family, neighbors, mom’s group

or co-workers who are looking for an amazing place for their young child 2½ - 6 years old, please let them know about our open house. They can call 360-892-7770 for additional information. Thank you.

Newcomers Class

This winter, the Newcomers class, “Making Inquiries,” will be held during the regular 10 a.m. Adult Education hour, on Sundays, March 15 to 29, from 10-11 am, in the Youth Bldg. This class is an excel-lent way, not only to learn about Good Shepherd and the Episcopal Church but also to get acquainted with other parishioners. Topics include our faith journey, a history of the Episcopal-Anglican Church, our liturgy and theology, and how to get connected at Good Shepherd. Feel free to attend any or all of the sessions. Childcare is available in the nursery for infants and toddlers, and Sunday School for preschool children and above is available during that hour in the Children’s Educational and Youth Buildings.

Please sign up in the church entry or contact the church office, 360-892-7770, or Rick Farr, 360-600-9237.

Income Tax Assistance It is income tax time and once again Ken Voss and Rick Farr will be of-fering assistance with your taxes. Appointments are available on March 22 and 29. Each appointment will last approximately one hour and when finished your tax return will be completed and filed. There is no charge for this service. The Church of the Good Shepherd Renovation Update We are having our construction/remodel begin the week after Easter, which means that April 19, 2020 will be our FIRST Sunday worshiping up the street in the gymnasium of Ellsworth Elementary School. We’ve been informed by our builder and architects that we need to continue to worship on Sunday mornings up the street until January 31, 2021 (at the latest), or until right before Christmas 2020 (at the very earliest). The reason for being out of our Sanctuary for several months is quite simply this: Our church campus will be deemed a construction site and as such, safety is and will be priority number one for all our parishioners. Best case scenario is that we’ll be back in our church right before Christmas time 2020. And least case scenar-io is that we’ll return to our beloved church by the end of January 2021. That’s all we have to go with right now. Of course, prayers are appreciated from everyone who calls Good Shepherd their Church home. Remember, as the saying goes from our British brothers and sisters, ”Keep calm and Carry on”. Our much needed renovations to our beloved Church are only a temporary inconvenience for our long-term goal of providing up-to-date, safe and compliant buildings. That will ensure generations to come, will benefit like we do today, from the good stewardship of Her people, as well as, to continue God’s Kingdom-Building-Work. Finally, it’s important to remember, especially when we get a little anxious about being “out of our Church home” for several months is to remind ourselves that the ancient Israelites were “wanderers” for 40 years; and that our “wanderings” will only be about 40 weeks. Perspective is everything in our spiritual journeying with God and with each other and so we keep our eyes and hearts firmly fixed on the PRIZE –Jesus Christ, Our LORD and Savior-throughout all of this. “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen” (Romans 11:36, NRSV) Love in Christ, Fr. Tom Warne
