By the time you read this, we'll be well into the Lenten season. In February's newsletter and again beginning on Ash Wednesday and each Sunday following, you've heard a challenge. A challenge to "take up" our Bibles and read the stories of Jesus' life, death and resurrection for ourselves, rather than "give up" something for Lent. The confirmation class has been challenged to read a Gospel too. We talked about the challenges of reading our Bibles. Sometimes we get hung up on names, genealogy or even the translation of Scripture we're using. Sometimes we just don't understand what we're reading. Here are some tips for beginning: 1. Pray before you begin. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand. 2. Set aside some time for reading. Start small, don't force yourself to read multiple chapters at once. It takes time to digest and reflect on what you've read. 3. Use the table of contents in the front of your Bible to help you find Matthew, Mark, Luke & John, if you're not sure where to look. 4. Use a simple translation such as Common English, New Living Translation or even a paraphrase version such as The Message. (These are translations we use in worship) 5. Skip the genealogies (for now) and focus on the stories, words of Jesus. 6. Be gentle with yourself, we all start somewhere. Focus on what you're learning, rather than what you don't understand. Matthew, Mark and Luke tell the same story from different perspectives, intended to reach different audiences. Matthew's Gospel is known as the "Jewish Gospel". It was written with many references to the Torah's prophecy of the coming Messiah. Mark is thought to be the first Gospel written and is the shortest. Mark's author races through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. In Mark's Gospel, the disciples are often depicted as somewhat dense. Luke's Gospel was written to speak to the Gentiles (you & me). Luke's focus was detail, historical connections and the promise that the Messiah, Jesus was for all people. The Gospel of John is different, somewhat "otherworldly" as the writer of John speaks of the Christ who always was, is and will be. In John's Gospel, Jesus is always in control, always in authority, even as he was tortured and died on the cross. Each Gospel ends the same. Jesus is alive!! His resurrected body, no longer the same. So, which perspective of Jesus' life, death and resurrection catches your attention? A new transformed way of living is the outcome of the Gospels. Resurrection is the focus of the Jesus who teaches how to live fully through the Gospel stories. Resurrection that didn't stop with Jesus, but available for everyone transformed by HIS story. I can't wait to hear YOUR story! Agape, PG March 2016 Volume 32 Issue 3 Circuit Rider Richmond United Methodist Church A Note From Pastor Georgette
