Essential Question:
What determines the reactivity of an element?
Questions Notes
The number of electrons in the outside orbital are Valence electrons. These determine how reactive anelement is. (reactive-reacts a lot with other elements).
-Elements in group 1 are VERY REACTIVE because they easily lose 1 valence electron.-Elements in group 18 don’t react, because their outer orbital is full of electrons. They are called Noble Gases.
The atom to the right has ___ valence electrons, because…

Brainpop – Atomic ModelIons- This is why chemical reactions happen.
YouTube- Valence Electrons. They don’t have to know about electron configuration, but it will let them know where they are headed with this in high school.
Watch the Brainpop videos if you have time at the end.

Fill in your Bingo card with element names from the left. In a random order.
Element Bingo
8th Grade Science
1. Students will work in groups of 4.2. The group will decide who will be in charge of the bingo
call list. They will keep track of which cards are called.3. Stack the Bingo cards face down in the center of the
table.4. The person at the red seat will begin by reading the top Bingo card to the group.5. The group will use their Periodic Table to answer the question. 6. Each student will mark their answer on their Bingo card.7. The first person in the group to get 4 in a row wins.
