ACTIVITIES: This area accommodates popular and current magazines and newspapers displayed on shelving in a manner that is easy and interesting to browse and to user. Shelving will provide space for storage under display shelves for back issues from 1-12 months depending on frequency. Shelving displays also display current government (state and federal) documents and government document periodicals. Seating in this area should be comfortable lounge and table seating for users (see reader seating section.) This area is located in proximity to or with Current Newspapers.

ACTIVITIES: This area is nearby but distinct form current periodicals and is a study area for use of periodicals and newspapers in print and other formats. A limited back periodicals collection will also be accommodated in storage. Princeton-type, storage boxes can be used and flat storage is provided for back newspapers. Electronic database stations will be available to access full-text, on-line and CD based databases in adjacent areas Microform storage and viewing equipment will be located in adjacent areas Seating for users is interspersed (see reader seating section) Shelving for periodicals, newspapers and in print and micro formats. This area provides storage for six months of back issues for newspapers. In addition this area contains reader seating and a mix of map, index, and reader tables. Computer workstations are provided along with microfilm reader/printers and storage for microfilm and microfiche. ACTIVITIES: This area accommodates the multipurpose PC and OPAC stations available to access, search, and print listings from the libraries catalogs. Multipurpose PC stations are available to access full-text, on-line and CD based databases. The area needs to be organized so that staff can see the electronic workstations from the desk, however in this area staff is expected to be proactive in assisting patrons on the floor. OPAC terminals should be easily accessible from all of the stack areas in this section.

ACTIVITIES: Seating should be interspersed through out the colletion. Casual seating, work space (table) seating, and study (Carrel) seating should be provided if possible Space should facilitate the varying range of activities (from casual reading to strenuous research Some work areas (tables) should be designed as to allow for a large enough work area to accommodate the usage of bulky materials such as newspapers or multiple documents Consider providing as many electrical drops as possible for patrons with laptops; network drops at the same locations, where patrons could gain internet access as well as access to library printers and online databases, would not only provide a useful service to patrons, but also free up computers for patrons without laptops. Spaces should take advantage of indirect daylight when possible. OPAC and computer stations as well as the photocopy area should be interspersed throughout the M/N/G collections to accommodate patrons performing research from multiple sources.
