The College provides high quality, academically rigorous curriculum, developed in line with the Victorian Curriculum. It is structured to ensure students study a comprehensive range of both year long and semester long subjects in order to develop their skills in all areas of the curriculum.
The curriculum is delivered over a 5 day timetable with 5 teaching periods each day.
Curriculum Learning Opportunities at UYSC
Reporting on Learning and AchievementWe as a College give very specific advice to students and parents about what students are achieving in their learning.
Year 7 - 8 students receive:
• 4 Reports
• All subjects are divided into units.
• A unit is a semester length section of a subject.
• If it is a year long subject, students will study two units of this subject.
PromotionStudents who achieve ‘S’ results will be automatically promoted to the next year level.
Students who do not achieve the ‘S’ result will be subject to a promotion interview and a process designed to support each student to achieve success.
National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)Students in year 7 complete tests in Language Conventions, Writing, Reading, and Numeracy (with and without a calculator) in May.
Examinations Examinations for all year levels are now a part of the College operations. Years 7- 8 students complete exams in selected subjects, at the end of each semester.
The exam process is designed to prepare students for VCE and act as an assessment of their learning throughout the semester.

The Domain of English covers three strands:
7
English Year 8
At year 8, students learn to understand how the selection of text structures is influenced by the selection of language mode and how this varies for different purposes and audiences. Students explain how language features, images and vocabulary are used to represent different ideas and issues in texts.
They continue to consolidate their knowledge, selection and application of the strategies readers use to comprehend what they read. Year 8 students learn to be critical readers, questioning and analysing ideas and sources.
Students will practise the selection of language features for particular purposes, audiences and effects in their own writing. They make presentations and contribute actively to class and group discussions, using language techniques for effect.
They demonstrate their understanding of grammar, their ability to select vocabulary for effect and their use of accurate spelling and punctuation.
English Year 7
8English
At year 7 students explore text structures and the effect of audience, purpose and context. They develop their ability to understand, select and utilise the strategies good readers use to comprehend texts.
Year 7 students write structured and coherent texts for a range of purposes and audiences. They will respond to set topics, as well as writing about topics of their own choice.
Students make presentations and contribute actively to class and group discussions, using language features to engage the audience. They demonstrate their understanding of grammar, their ability to select vocabulary for effect and their use of accurate spelling and punctuation.

Japanese By the end of year 7, students will show an awareness of the language and cultural requirements related to a given topic, use vocabulary and grammar relevant to the topic, and adapt tones and gestures appropriately for the role, audience and purpose of the discourse.
Students will also gain an awareness and appreciation of another culture.
Students are introduced to:
• Japanese greetings
• starting and finishing a class
• how to use appropriate formal and informal greetings
• introducing themselves
• numbers
• Hiragana script
The UYSC Languages department encourages students to take their Language studies to VCE or VCE Baccalaureate level for advanced placement in a tertiary institution.
8Languages: Japanese Year 7 and 8
Japanese Students in year 8 will be introduced to the topics of family, likes and dislikes, telling the time, daily routine and date.
They also learn about some aspects of Japanese culture, traditions and geography.
In the area of language studies students learn how to discuss their family members and express their likes and dislikes.
Students will also be able to tell the time and learn new Kanji characters.
At the end of year 8, students will show awareness of the language and cultural requirements related to a given topic, adapt language and gesture appropriately for the role, audience and purpose of the discourse.
Literacy Literacy is a subject aimed at students requiring extra support with the development of their literacy skills.
In these smaller classes, students focus on improving their skills in reading, writing and comprehension.
A large focus is placed on improving the reading techniques of students. They learn to use and apply a variety of strategies, enabling them to access and understand different text types.
Students complete a variety of writing and vocabulary activities, designed to improve their ability to write for all subject areas.
The subject aims to incorporate students’ personal interests, as a way of engaging students while improving their skills in literacy.
Literacy and Numeracy Year 7Numeracy The UYSC Numeracy Program provides individualised programs to improve basic numeracy skills. It hopes to provide students with an understanding of the importance of numeracy in everyday life, success in the hope that their interest in mathematics increases and scaffolding for their regular mathematics classes.
Students discover new ways and ‘‘tricks’’ for dealing with basic numeracy. They learn to explain concepts to their peers and in turn reinforce their own knowledge.
The program “Studyladder” is used to assess each student’s numeracy skills, to provide individual learning programs and to give students personalised feedback on their progress. Students work through topics in Studyladder including regular assessment of learning. ‘‘Manga High’’ is used to reinforce their knowledge and provide individualised programs and game-based learning.
Learning a second language supports students’ literacy and skills in their first and
subsequent language(s) by focusing on structures,
systems and patterns of language generally. Japanese

ScienceMathematicsThe Science curriculum provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of important scientific concepts and processes, the practices used to develop scientific knowledge, the contribution of science to our culture and society, and its applications in our lives. The curriculum supports students to develop the scientific knowledge, understandings and skills to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues and to participate, if they so wish, in science-related careers.
In Semester One year 8 students study:
Chemistry : Differences between elements, compounds and mixtures can be described by using a particle model.
Biology: Cells are the basic units of living things and have specialised structures and functions.
Physics: Energy appears in different forms including movement (kinetic energy), heat, light, chemical energy and potential energy; devices can change energy from one form to another.
Light can form images using the reflective feature of curved mirrors and the refractive feature of lenses, and can disperse to produce a spectrum which is part of a larger spectrum of radiation.
In Semester Two students study:
Chemistry: The properties of the different states of matter can be explained in terms of the motion and arrangement of particles.
Chemical change involves substances reacting to form new substances.
Biology: Multicellular organisms contain systems of organs that carry out specialised functions that enable them to survive and reproduce.
Earth and Space: Sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks contain minerals and are formed by processes that occur within Earth over a variety of time scales.
Semester One is an introduction to the science laboratory, its equipment and working safely. Year 7 students study:
Chemistry: Mixtures, including solutions, contain a combination of pure substances that can be separated using a range of techniques
Biology: There are differences within and between groups of organisms; classification helps organise this diversity.
Interactions between organisms can be described in terms of food chains and food webs and can be affected by human activity.
Semester Two students study:
Physics: Change to an object’s motion is caused by unbalanced forces acting on the object ; Earth’s gravity pulls objects towards the centre of Earth.
Simple machines: devices can change energy from one form to another.
Earth and Space: Predictable phenomena on Earth, including seasons and eclipses, are caused by the relative positions of the Sun, Earth and the Moon.
Some of Earth’s resources are renewable, but others are non-renewable.
Water is an important resource that cycles through the environment.
