1 Deep Water: The 8 Extraordinary Vessels What are they and what do they do? There are a multitude of possible answers to these questions because the extraordinary meridians are so… extraordinary! For a start they seem to be in some sense deeper meridians, with a strong connection to the primal energies and structures of the body (Jing, Yuan Qi, the Extraordinary Fu). They seem also to be a kind of pre-meridian group which help in the actual formation of the body’s structure initially in the embryonic stage and then throughout infancy, childhood and puberty and then again at regular intervals when larger shifts need to take place within, for example, the hormone system. They are often portrayed as being fairly simple in structure. This seems to be deceptive however, for when we begin to look closer and, even more so, when we begin to investigate them in practice, we find that their pathways are by no means simple. However, what seems to mark them out is the difficulty that has been experienced in achieving a standard and accepted picture of their pathways and zones of influence. Depending on whom you talk to and what you read, you will be confronted with radically different versions. To generalise, we could say that most authorities seem to be able to agree on a kind of minimum pattern. This is then more or less embellished by those practitioners and theorists who tend to use them and/or think about them a lot. An astounding experience during one intensive weekend of teaching provides my strongest personal sense of the Extraordinary Vessels to this day. As my partner slowly and methodically traced out the pathways and points of the vessels, they revealed themselves in the form of what I can only describe as “energetic clothing”. The clothing was in no way reminiscent of our familiar, modern, western styles. Instead it reminded me of the kind of garments one might see in a science fiction movie with strong influences from Samurai films and paintings. This clothing took the form of loose, comfortably fitting layers with a very strongly, almost dramatically defined cut. In this sense the extraordinary meridians revealed themselves not as lines on the surface of the body. Very far from that, they seemed instead to form a set of layered, energetic garments covering, protecting and energizing every part of me, overlapping at key, central areas such as head, neck, waist, abdomen, back and legs. Conversely my arms, face and chest were left relatively free and only lightly covered. Several years later my girlfriend, Marina happened to find an interesting book in Paris with some very exciting pictures portraying various aspects of the Extraordinary Vessels. The author himself seems to have either dreamed or envisioned these images and set them
