CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Classroom managements relates to controlling the learning situation, directing the learning for the students and coping with uncertainties. It can be defined as “managing the classroom situation to ensure that an atmosphere is generated where the most effective learning takes place from all of the students”

Five main areas of importance in classroom management

1. Arousal : to ensure that students are motivated and ready to learn

2. Expectancy:making sure that students know what is required of them and what they will be able to do after learning

3. Incentive:ensuring students know how achievements will be rewarded

4. Disciplinary:ensuring that the work of a group is not disrupted

5. Employment:ensuring that students are gainfully employed in a variety of activities

Suggestions for class-room management

Arousal

• Use novel strategies for a change and to break up any monotony

• Create interest through relevance• Change the stimulus frequently between verbal,

whiteboard, OHP and charts• Have frequent breaks and change of activity to combat

fatigue. Ensure that individuals do not become overexcited.

• Get to know the personality characteristics of your students (extroverts and introverts) as soon as possible

• Tell students the objectives of what is to be learned

• Always praise student achievement

• Have high expectations of your students

• Avoid the use of “punishment”
