A preliminary Study of the Historic Buildings in Makkah and Jeddah
The Holy City of Makkah which lies inland 37 kilometers east of Jeddah, is situated on the
eastern shore of the Red Sea. Makkah is the place where the Prophet Muhammad, peace be
upon him, was born - the place where God's message was first revealed to him and the city
to which he returned after the migration to Madinah in 266 AD.
Makkah is the holiest city on earth to Muslims. Five times each day, the world's one billion
Muslims, wherever they may be, turn to the Holy City of Makkah to pray. And at least once
in their lives, all Muslims who are not prevented by personal circumstance perform
the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Makkah. Thus each year the Holy City of Makkah is host to
some two million hajjis (pilgrims) from all over the world.
In the holy city of Makkah are preserved many valuable historic buildings including
mosques, forts and palaces. There are a few historical palaces located in Jarwal area of
Makkah which are worth study from the conservation point of view. These palaces
represent a composite type of cultural heritage which is a unique in its own. Some of these
palaces represent a specific style found only in coral stone buildings of the western coast of
Jeddah and Yanbu where wooden mashrabiyas and AL-Arbta-ELkhashbiya (Timber ties) is
an essential part of the buildings. A preliminary study was conducted by Al-Turath to study
some of these historic monuments from the conservation point.
Hamed EL-Suliman Palace and Quwair Palace is among these historic moments.

Methodology:
Conservation is a process of understanding, interpreting and managing of the architectural
heritage in order to protect it for the future generation.
During this training program participants will go through complete process of conservation
of the historic buildings, to be a precise delineation of what survives in terms of buildings
and urban plan, as a basis for integrity, and also for future protection and conservation,
and a clear understanding of the threshold beyond which integrity would no longer be
intact if further buildings were lost.
A Restoration Manual will be used as an integral part of any restoration process in historic
cities. The manual is a compilation of different technical process for the restoration of
buildings which includes static and preservation problems and its solution in a most
technical manner.
First part of this process includes following components:
collection of historical data
survey of the building using traditional and computer-laser technology(traditional
survey method with technical amenities which include survey with hand devices, total
station and laser scanning survey and photography)
analyses of buildings' state: construction (foundation, external and internal bearing
walls, wall plaster, beams, joist and all the internal details), used materials included all
types of doors, windows, mashrabiyas, rawashin and even(Timber ties)Arbta -
hkhasbiyah, connecting wooden line, which are placed generally in between the coral
stone walls, level of deterioration pathologies and causes of deterioration, etc.) and to
give a diagnose the specific problem of the building for the conservation purpose.
Second part of the process includes following components:
to restitute original state of the buildings, and finally,
prepare conceptual design for rehabilitation and reuse of buildings.
These studies will be carried out under the supervision of experts in this field:
Dr. Osamah El Gohari, Dr. Amir Pasic, Eng. Sami Saleh Mahmoud Nawar, Dr. Syed Anis
Hashim, Dr. Sameh Abdusalam Abbas, Alija Botic, Dr. Motasim Kasasbekh and Dr.
