Task•
MODULE 1
Module 1:
Reading Closely and Writing to Learn:
Journeys and Survival
Module 1Unit 1
In Unit 1, students begin the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. Students will read closely to practice citing evidence and drawing inferences from this compelling text as they begin to analyze and contrast the points of view of the two central characters, Salva and Nya.
Module 1Unit 2
In Unit 2, students will read the remainder of the novel, focusing on the commonalities between Salva and Nya in relation to the novel’s theme: how individuals survive in challenging environments. Students will read this literature closely alongside complex informational texts. Unit 2 culminates with a literary analysis essay about the theme of survival.
Module 1Unit 3
Unit 3 brings students back to a deep exploration of character and point of view: students will combine their research about Sudan with specific quotes from A Long Walk to Water as they craft a research-based two voice poem, comparing and contrasting the points of view of the two main characters, Salva and Nya. The two-voice poem gives students an opportunity to use both their analysis of the characters and theme in the novel and their research about the experiences of the people of Southern Sudan during the Second Sudanese Civil War.
• Module 2
Module 2: Working with Evidence-
Working Conditions
Module 2Unit 1
The first unit focuses on Lyddie, a novel that tells the story of a young girl who goes to work in the Lowell mills, and explores the issue of working conditions in industrializing America. This unit builds students’ background knowledge about working conditions and how they affect workers. As an end of unit assessment, students write an argument essay about Lyddie’s choices regarding her participation in the protest over working conditions.
Module 2Unit 2
The second unit moves to more recent history and considers the role that workers, the government, and consumers all play in improving working conditions. The central text in Unit 2 is a speech by César Chávez, in which he explains how the United Farm Workers empowered farmworkers. In the End of Unit 2 Assessment, students apply their understanding of text structure to a new speech.
Module 2Unit 3
Unit 3 focuses on research through an investigation of working conditions in the modern day garment industry, students explore how businesses can affect working conditions, both positively and negatively. As a final performance task, students create a consumer’s guide to working conditions in the garment industry.
Module 3
Module 3:Understanding Perspectives-Slavery- The
People Could Fly
Module 3 Unit 1
In Unit 1, The People Could Fly introduces the topic and the question that connects all three units in the module: What gives stories and poems their enduring power? Through the Narrative of Frederick Douglas they explore slavery, Douglass’s life, and the debate over slavery in the United States before the Civil War. In Unit 1 students build their capacity for making sense of this complex text and learning the routines that will guide their work for the remainder of the module. Then students study poetry.
Module 3Unit 2
Unit 2 centers on the analysis of excerpts from Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. The End of Unit 2 Assessment is an essay in which students explain how the Narrative conveyed Douglass’s purpose and distinguished his position from that of others
Module 3Unit 3
In Unit 3, students write their own powerful story, using Frederick Douglass: The Last Day of Slavery as a mentor text. They select one event from the Narrative and rewrite it as a picture book for younger students, making sure that the story they create is powerful, just as the stories they have been reading are powerful.
Assessment
–Ongoing Formative Assessment from Daily Work
–Comprehension Assessments within Each Unit
–Daily Writing and Final Written Drafts across all genres (narrative, informative, opinion)
–One Cumulative, Theme-Based, Technology-Embedded Performance Task in each Module
Module 1: Research Based Two-Voice Poem Module 2: Writing a Research Synthesis-Working

Advisory
Advisory enriches and enhances our time here at ESM.
Advisory is your second family and your advisory becomes your "go to" person if you need help, advice, or just someone to talk to.
Advisory is a time to reflect on how the school year is going, talk about academic goals, and learn about the future (high school, college, career, and beyond)!
College
One of our 7th grade advisory themes is college.
Mr. Caldwell (along with many other adults including parents) want to know what students want to be when they grow up and where do they want to go to college.
This year in 7th grade we will learn about why we should go to college, what is college like, and what colleges might be right for us!
Service Learning
Middle School students are required to complete 20 hours of SERVICE LEARNING in order to attend 8th grade promotion.
Service Learning is any type of community service or time you volunteer to help others. This is a great opportunity to get involved with the school or in your hometown. Not only will students be helping the world become a better place, but they become a better person :)
Students can do it all in one year or spread it out. But hours need to get started soon!
Babysitting sisters or cousins for free is not service learning. Volunteering in the library, going to a food pantry, or cleaning a park is what service learning looks like!
More abut advisory…
Sometimes 7th grade can be a little dramatic ...but that's what advisory can help with!
We'll be talking about: Time Management
How to get involved in school and be a leader
Being a good friend
Being a good student
Safe internet and technology use
... and many, many other things
