Building upon the philosophy of our Rites of Passage exhibits for undergrads, each year Manifestoffers a similar opportunity to current or recent graduate students.

This seventh installment of the Master Pieces project continues to reveal the intensity and professionalism ofstudents working towards their terminal academic degree in the field of art or design. This is our 7th annualall-gallery feature of work by current or recent graduate students. Master Pieces is one of our most excitingannual exhibits because the effort of folks pursuing or just having attained their Master's Degree usuallyrepresents the highest level of artistic production at one end of a professional career as an artist. This makesfor a particularly interesting exhibition experience.

Often the most exceptional artwork comes from these artists’ immersion in their culture of studyand intellectual pursuit. Manifest’s goal year after year is to select and document works that in thetruest sense of the word are contemporary masterpieces – works that set the standard of quality thatthe artist is expected to maintain throughout his or her professional career. This catalog will serve asa visual documentation of these artists’ own benchmarks for years to come.

For this incarnation of the project 162 artists representing 78 different academic graduate programssubmitted 411 works for consideration by Manifest's multi-member jury process. Twenty-one worksby these 14 artists from 11 states representing 14 different academic programs were selected forpresentation in the gallery and this catalog.

Why is this project important?

Passing through an accredited college art program is one wayamong many to become an artist. While it does not guaranteesuccess, it does serve as a measurable achievement, and if thedegree granting institution is holding up its end of the bargain,each artist who attains a degree through such a program hasmet or surpassed certain standards. For graduate programs thismeans they have attained the level of Master. For programswhich are appropriately rigorous, designating someone as aMaster is seriously meaningful business. As with its Rites ofPassage project Manifest's Master Pieces is meant to serve asan external view into this process, across a broader scope thanjust one institution, and is offered as a bridge between aca-demic pursuit and the general public. The exhibit catalogs forMaster Pieces will, over time, become a compelling documentframing a view into the state of art in academia, and quitepossibly the launching place for future notable artists of theworld.

Manifest was founded by students and professors...

To this day it continues to be operated by artists, teachers,professors, and students, most of whom are volunteers.MASTER PIECES is one of the significant ways we honor the origins of Manifest, and the creative vibrancy of artists-becoming-artists, and the importance of the study andteaching of art in the academic institutions of today.

Our production of this project, year after year, is heartfelt.Everyone here has been there, as art students ourselves at onetime. Our regular staff have been or are currently teachers andprofessors outside of Manifest. Most of us have also been grad-uate students. Manifest believes people need more exposure toexcellent visual art, and that society cannot be whole withoutcreativity. Where else better to provide this need than with thenew Master artists of today?

About Manifest

Founded in 2004 by professors and students fromarea Universities, Manifest Creative Research Gallery andDrawing Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organiza-tion headquartered in the historic urban neighborhoodof East Walnut Hills in Cincinnati, Ohio. The 1000 squarefoot museum-quality street level gallery offers three dis-tinct exhibition spaces, and is minutes away fromdowntown Cincinnati, and the numerous academicinstitutions of higher learning in the region. Its centrallocation in the Woodburn Avenue district and DeSalesCorner places it within an energetic, creative, and revi-talizing community that includes other galleries, shops,restaurants and artists’ studios.

The gallery benefits from its location within easy walkingdistance of a historic neighborhood populated by resi-dents from all walks of life. The galleries are free andopen to the public five hours a day, five days a week,presenting works of all kinds by student and profession-al artists from around the world. The Manifest DrawingCenter Studio is located in nearby Madisonville.

Manifest is supported by grants and public donationsand has the goal to support student professionalism,integrate the arts into the urban residential communityand raise the bar on artistic standards. The mission alsoincludes the exploration of the relationship between artand design, as well as the ongoing support and displayof drawing in all its various forms.
