THE 1956 S1A TE C. I. F. TRACK MEET
STATE C. I. F. FEDERATED COUNCIL
CaJ.ifornia's 1%6 state CIF Track and Field championships wi!i write the thirty-eighth· chapter in the historyof the finest high school track program in the nation, this afternoon and evening here at the Chico state College field.
Year after year the boys who wear the colors of theirhigh schools make outstanding achievement and new stateand nationa,l records something to be taken for granted, rather than looked upon as a rare occurrence. California'strack and field program is looked upon by the rest of thenation as being tops. A brief review of the achievementsof the high school boys throughout the nation shows whythis is a fact.
On the 1954 high school Noa,tional Honor Roll therewere 159 names listed. Seventy-three of the 159 nameswere boys from California high schools. In the 16 eventswhich are recognized by the National Honor Roll, California high s::hool boys were the top performers in 11events. Not only did California boys give the top pertormances in 1954, in 11 events, but they were second in10 events. The brilliance of the all-around competitive

achievement of today's Californi,a, high school performeris demonstrated by the marks in 1954 in the 440-yarddash, in the 180-yard low hurdles, in the broad jump, theshot put, the 120-yard high hurdles and the 880-yard relayevents; in all of which California had three performancesbetter than the best mark made by any boy in the other47 states.
On the 1955 National Honor Roll 140 boys were listed.Forty-three California names and schools were included.Of the 16 events recognized, California was the top performer in 6 events.
When the 1956 National Honor Roll is compiled, manyof the boys competing here at Chico state College today, will have earned themselves the highest recognition innational high school track and field circles. Certainly theexcellent coa, ching provided by the high school teachers, the fine facilities of the California public schools, thespirited competition which is conducted under responsiblehigh school athletic administrators, and the famed California climate have much to do with this outstandingrecord.
