Summer is flying by, but of course it always does!
The big event of this month is the Airshow of the
Cascades. With the addition of the Erickson’s Air
Museum the Air Show has grown by leaps and
bounds. With this growth is the calling of
volunteers to help run the show to keep it flowing
smoothly. Take a look around you when you are attending this
year and ask yourself where is an area that I would like
volunteering in. It is greatly appreciated by the staff that manages
the Air Show and by all the spectators that attend.
It is time for school shopping for clothes and school supplies. The
businesses ask that you shop local for these items!
Have a great the rest of the summer! Please be safe in whatever
you do.
Jefferson County Library Film Center The Film Center will not be showing films during the summer months.
“Screen on the Green” Movie will be at

WATER. We drink it, play in it, make Kool Aid with it and it is the life blood of our number
one industry in Jefferson County. Our local farmers, ranchers and seed processors depend on
efficient distribution of water sourced eighty miles south of Madras from Wickiup Reservoir.
This year is the 70th Anniversary of the North Unit Irrigation District. The Chamber’s Annual
Awards Banquet is theming and recognizing the value of water, the distribution of it and the
economic impact the agriculture industry has on our communities.
We are excited in incorporating NUID’s presentation that will be showcased during the
Awards presentations recognizing individuals that assist our communities grow, the
instrumental members who make things happen within our area and the unsung-unknown heroes who make our
communities complete.
You are encouraged to fill out a NOMINATION form, included in this newsletter, of a person that you believe
deserves their appropriate recognition by the Chamber for the following awards: Community Champion of the
Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Business of the Year, and Public Servant of the Year.
All of the above awards have been extended to many distinguished community members in the past, as well
to community members who have run well under the radar of many of us. Your Chamber believes recognition is
important and is proud of highlighting the depth and quality of the people who enhance the value of living in our
community.
We failed to include Brandon Searcy, with Rip Q Graphics, in our Thank You ad in the Madras Pioneer.
Brandon cordially chauffeured our Parade Honorees in the Chamber Annual Fourth of July Parade and supplied
the Honoree Banners. Volunteers and local business are key to our events and the vitality of our area. Thank you
Brandon.

“Chamber’s Wandering Mystery Camera Clip”… See last month’s Clip on Page 7 in Member Spotlight.
Congratulations to Bruce Hoyt with Air Show of the Cascades for the lucky draw of the Mystery Camera Clip in the July Newsletter. Good Luck to you in your quest of finding the Mystery Clip in this month’s issue. The “Wandering Mystery Camera Clip” will be a picture of part of a member’s business, or a place, which will be locat-ed somewhere in or close to Jefferson County. We may or may not, give a hint each time, where the business or place is located. Our purpose is that you are more aware of what and where our member businesses are located. When you
look at the photo in the newsletter and recognize the place of business, call us with the name and location of the business or place featured. The first 10 caller’s names will be put in a pot & the winner will be drawn from those names for the free business card ad in next month’s Newsletter. We will announce the winner in our next month’s newsletter. Our “Wandering Mystery Camera Clip” business this month is a place to get items to work with and to send or receive or have custom work done ...hmmm???

In December 1973, Ralph & Darlene Casady opened their doors as Round Butte
TV Service where Busy Bee Market is located. Shortly thereafter, they purchased
a home on “D” ST, where they continued to operate their business.
The Casadys were able to pick up a Zenith franchise in 1975. This necessitated
having a showroom, so they built one adjacent to their shop. There they sold
television and stereos. Jay & Jeanette Macy of Madras bought the first stereo
system sold by the Casadys.
Radio Shack approached the Casadys in 1976 about buying into their franchise,
which they did. After almost losing their shirt that first couple of years, they
moved to downtown Madras, where the Art Adventure Gallery building is now
located. The 1979 flood almost destroyed their new showroom, except for Ralph’s
all night effort in creating a dike against the back door with bath towels.
In 1985 Wiley Compton, manager of Erickson’s Sentry Market invited the Casadys to move
into a portion of Sentry’s newly expanded space, where Roger’s Drug Store used to be. They
opened their doors as Ralph’s TV & Radio Shack. Parking was excellent and business picked
up. According to Darlene, “Guys would come to see us, while their wives shopped (next door).”
Shortly thereafter, Casadys added large appliances to their line-up, “It became an easy one-stop
shopping for everyone,” said Darlene.
Two years later, they began a “Rent-To-Own” program in electronics, appliance and furniture.
Ralph was the first retailer in Central Oregon to offer a six month same as cash program. “Talk
about a scary proposition,” recalls Darlene. “However, it was one of the best business decisions
we ever made.
In 1993, the Casadys dropped the Radio Shack franchise. Darlene remembers their son, Chad,
home from college for a weekend helping Ralph take down the Radio Shack sign. About a year
later, someone came into the store wanting to buy a TV cable. “We said we weren’t a Radio
Shack anymore.” Laughing, Darlene shared that the customer replied, “Well the sign’s still up
outside!”
Needing more space for business expansion, Ralph & Darlene purchased the Violette building
across from Erickson's and moved RALPH’S Furniture & TV to its current location at 525 SE
5th Street in Madras.
Ed & Donna Hagedorn purchased the business in September 1977, when Ralph and Darlene
decided to retire. In 2005-06, the building went through an extensive facelift renovation with
showroom and storage space added. This was accomplished with the help of a Madras
Community Redevelopment Grant in partnership with the Hagedorns.
RALPH’S Furniture & TV still offers “a 6 month same as cash” Rent-To-Own program to
qualified buyers interested in purchasing home electronics, major appliances and furniture plus
a retail cash and carry business. Ed & Donna state, “We love our new showroom and extra
storage space. It gives us a greater opportunity to have just what our customer needs.”
“Come enjoy our month long Anniversary Sale, starting September 1st,” Donna invites. It’s
our way of saying thank you, as we proudly celebrate 42 years of service to Central Oregon!”
