hectares of predominately rural countryside with five urban centres. Port Hope and Cobourg are located in the west, Colborne and Brighton are located in the east, and Trent Hills is located in the north. The County is roughly rectangular, following the north shore of Lake Ontario as its southerly border and Rice Lake as its northerly border. It is 62 kilometres long, 20 kilometres wide at the west and 42 kilometres wide at the east. The County is divided into three maintenance areas, the west end, the north end, and the south end. In the winter there are four areas created for winter control, to accommodate the increase with the inclusion of the downloaded highways. The west end is based from the Cobourg depot and the north and south areas are based from the Morganston Depot.A complement of 15 tandem trucks is used in maintaining the road system to meet the requirements of providing a well-maintained transportation system.

Lone Pine Marsh Sanctuary Land TrustLone Pine Marsh is a small land trust started in the mid-1990s by local resident Murial Braham, who was very fond of a marshland property she would pass by often. In 1991, she decided to purchase the property with the intention of stewarding it for its biological value. In 1996, she helped to form a not-for-profit land trust, which became the owner of the property. For the next 20 years she made and sold jam at countless local events to help pay for the property and in doing so became a well-known and well-loved local figure.Today the Lone Pine Marsh land trust owns four properties in the Cold Creek and Marsh Creek watersheds, stewarding a total of 148 hectares.www.lonepinemarsh.ca • [email protected]
Nawautin Nature Sanctuary & WetlandThis 5.3-hectare sanctuary shelters a wide variety of wildlife including deer, fox, beaver, rabbits and birds. Discover a small covered bridge, several ponds, waterfront parks and a pebbly beach that slopes gradually to Lake Ontario. Accessible from the
Estate of Nawautin Shores, Lakeshore Road, south of Grafton. 905.349.2822
Northumberland County ForestSituated on the Oak Ridges Moraine, this forest is an ecological oasis for flora and fauna and offers an excellent opportunity to connect with nature with more than 50 km of hiking trails including the single largest and continuous stretch of off road trail established on the Oak Ridges Moraine Trail. At Morris Road, 14 km north of Hwy. 401 on County Road 45. Follow the Oak Ridges Moraine Trail blazes to a 310 m elevation for a wonderful view atop an abandoned ski hill. It takes about 25 minutes one way. In the forest there are also plenty of technical mountain biking trails, horseback riding trails on soft sandy soils, cross country skiing and snowshoeing over varied terrain and regional connections for snowmobiles and ATVs, with some dirt bike riding mixed in. And, fitting to the rolling hills of Northumberland, a spectacular view.1.866.401.3278
