BY CATHY ASPLIN Te Awamutu rower Graham Oberlin-Brown wrote his name in the his- tory books on Sunday — he was the first competitor to cross the finish line at the 2010 Rowing World Cham- pionships. The Kiwi lightweight men’s pair of Oberlin- Brown and James Lassche put in an impressive row in difficult conditions on Lake Karapiro. They had the added pres- sure of being the first New Zealand team in action, in the first race of the first day, and taking on the current world champions, France. But after New Zealand pushed past Fabien Tilliet and Jean-Christophe Bette, they left nothing to chance. They showed their class and knowledge of Lake Karapiro on a windy day to take the win in 6:33:35. This earned them a spot in Friday’s final and now makes them favourites with the fastest qualifying time. Oberlin-Brown and Lassche certainly took some pressure off them- selves by performing so well. They avoid the repechages and have the luxury of several days break before racing again. ‘‘We just tried to stay as relaxed as we could. We were just thinking about our race and getting in the best position. ‘‘We came into the regatta with a plan. Obvi- ously we wanted to race well in the heat, but we want to get stronger as the regatta goes on. Hopefully come Friday we’ll be in even better shape,’’ says Oberlin-Brown. He enjoyed racing in front of family, friends and former coaches from Te Awamutu. Unfortunately after just two events (five heats) on Sunday FISA put racing on hold and eventually can- celled it due to the strong winds. Tom Mayo, CEO of the organising committee, says it was a disappointment that things did not run smoothly but he reminded people that ‘‘we are in the weather’s hands’’. OPENING CEREMONY Te Awamutu people were part of the large crowd that helped celebrate the opening of the 2010 World Rowing Championships. The event began with Rob Hamill rowing his ocean boat and transporting Kiwi comedian Dai Henwood (wearing a rowing one-piece from the 1978 World Rowing Champion- ships) to the stage. Performances by pop opera group Lyrica and acrobatic sensation Zach Washer kept the crowd happy between Henwood’s jokes and some highlights from 1978 Championships. Local school children were flag bearers for the 49 competing countries. Of course the host nation, New Zealand, scored the loudest cheer from the crowd as rowers Mahe ´Drysdale and Eric Murray crossed the stage. To page 5. Computer recyclingday this Saturday

Te Awamutu joins more than 40towns and cities across New Zealandparticipating in New Zealand’s freecomputer recycling event, eDay, thisSaturday from 9am-3pm.

Minister for the Environment, NickSmith announced the nationwideevent in early October.

Led locally by Waipa District Coun-cil with support from local wasteexpert company Red Bins, the aim is todivert as much as 12 tonnes of elec-tronic waste from landfills, doublinglast year’s amount of six tonnes.

Council’s team leader corporateand community planning ShelleyMonrad says electronic waste is nowone of the fastest growing wastestreams in the world. She says eDay isbeing made possible in Waipa becauseof fantastic local support.

“Red Bins has generously come onboard, and is letting us use their depotand staff to collect, sort and pack thee-waste. This event would be muchmore difficult to run without them,

and we’re very grateful for theirsupport,” Mrs Monrad says.

Material that can be disposed of ateDay includes all computer-relatedequipment, game consoles, faxmachines and digital cameras. Mobilephones can also be dropped off and willbe donated to Starship Hospital’sMobile Phone Recycling Appeal.

“TV sets and home hi-fi equipmentcannot be accepted this year becausethe channels for recycling these itemsare not sufficiently well developed.”

Mrs Monrad says the eDay team isexpecting a big turnout in Te Awa-mutu.

On-site volunteers will be askingpeople to participate in a quick surveyabout e-waste when they drop off theirequipment.

eDay: Saturday, November 6, 9am-3pm, Red Bins, 547 Paterangi Road, TeAwamutu and EnviroWaste, 27 MatosSegedin Drive, Cambridge. For moreinformation visit Council’s websitewww.waipadc.govt.nz.

Water saving criticalSummer water restrictions began

in Waipa District yesterday, with theuse of sprinklers limited to alternativedates.

Waipa District Council’s managerwater services Bob Shaw says thecoming New Zealand summer will beinfluenced by the La Nina weatherpattern, bringing warm, dry andsunny conditions. That puts pressureon the district’s water reserves.

Mr Shaw says that at peak times, onaverage the district uses 36.9 millionlitres of water every day. Last year, reserves got down to concerning levelsand Council was forced to extendsprinkler restrictions to May 2010.

“For our water reserves to last thesummer, everyone needs to reducetheir water use now. Ideally, we’d liketo see this figure down to 31.3 millionlitres per day,” Mr Shaw says.

To reduce water use, Council hasinitiated a water alert level one whichrestricts the use of sprinkler systemsto alternative dates on the odds andevens system.

People living at addresses with anodd street number can use sprinklerson dates ending in an odd number, andpeople living at addresses with an evenstreet number can use sprinklers ondates ending in an even number.

Council’s water alerts run fromlevel one to three with restrictionsranging from sprinkler and hoserestrictions to full bans on all externalwater use for urban, rural, non-residential and commercial proper-ties.

Mr Shaw says while Council will doeverything it can to ensure thedistrict’s water supply lasts the sum-mer, everyone needs to get behind theeffort. Ultimately it is up to individ-uals to use their household and busi-ness water effectively, he says.

A water conservation campaignusing local newspapers and Council’swebsite will run from November toFebruary 2011, to ensure residentsknow what water alerts are in placeand what they can do to help reducetheir water usage.

Claydon family take chance topay respects to brother, uncle

TC021110SP10MIKE CLAYDON, flanked by sons James (left) and Mark, at ‘Centaur Park’, Colandra, alongside the large monument on the coast looking out to sea towards where theAHS Centaur sunk.

Final chapter of the ill-fated AustralianHospital ship Centaur was enacted latelast month 50km off the coast of Brisbane, and Mike Claydon of Te Awamutu andsons James and Mark were there to bepart of it.

They were among 320 relatives of thoselost in the tragic sinking of the AHSCentaur 67 years ago, who were trans-ported to the site of the sinking by theHMAS Manoora. Also in attendance wereMartin Pash, the last remaining survivor, and military and political dignitaries.

Mr Claydon was there to lay a wreathinto the Coral Sea in honour of his olderbrother Jack who was killed as an 18-year-old on the ship.

AHS Centaur was torpedoed by aJapanese submarine on 14 May 1943. Ofthe 332 people on board, including mer-chant seamen, hospital staff and armynurses, only 64 survived.

The shipwreck of AHS Centaur, discov-ered on December 20 last year, is underprotection of the Historic Shipwrecks Act.

The trip to Brisbane did not start wellfor Mr Claydon and his sons. Relaxing intheir hotel rooms watching television, they heard that there had been a fire in theengine room of the HMAS Kanimbla, which was meant to take them out to thesite.

Fortunately, sister ship Manoora wasrushed into service.

On the morning of the sailing therelatives met in the city centre at 5am andwere transported to the ship in eight largebuses.

As each person walked up the gang-plank, they were escorted by a male orfemale sailor, and made welcome onboard. They were soon fed a hearty cookedbreakfast — the first of three superb mealsprepared throughout the day by the eightchefs on board.

‘‘The boat was accompanied by orcas aswe made our way out to the sinking site, asthough they were guiding us,’’ MrClaydon says.

‘‘We finally arrived at that tragic site

where so many young lives were lost.‘‘The service was conducted by the

army and navy and after a few hymnswere sung and prayers said, the peoplewho had brought ashes of loved ones putthem over the stern and then those of uswho had brought wreaths lined up andthrew them into the bright blue sea, with atear and a prayer.

On the homeward journey, relatives ofthose lost on the Centaur were invited torecount life stories of their loved ones.

‘‘There were some very emotionalstories. I was asked to give my story aboutmy Jack but I declined. Later, I wished Ihad.

‘‘Jack was born in England and thefamily moved to New Zealand where I wasborn. Then we all sailed to Sydney in the30s where dad was killed in an accident.

‘‘It was the depression years, Jack and Iended up in an orphanage 80 miles fromSydney at Kincumber. When Jack was 15he was allowed to go and live with mum inpaddington.

‘‘When he was 16 and a half he put hisage up and joined the Australian LightHorse, but the army decided horsesagainst tanks wouldn’t work, so Jackjoined the Australian Infantry Forces.

‘‘He went up to Darwin and wentthrough the bombing without so much asa scratch.

‘‘He came back to Sydney and joinedthe Medical Corps and that’s when hesailed on the ill-fated voyage on theCentaur.

‘‘Like millions of other young men, henever had much of a life.’’

Sports boxers bag four NZ titlesFarrelly brothers make great fist of first nationals

TC021110SP14BOXING BROTHERS: Callum (left) and Sean Farrelly, both national champions.

Nine boxers from Te Awamutu SportsClub represented Waikato with distinctionat the national championships in Christ-church, claiming four national titles.

This is the ultimate goal of the year forthe fighters, who have been training full onfor eight months — four nights a week atthe gym, plus their own schedule outsidethe Boxing Club training and competing atmany weekend tournaments.

Fighting in their first national cham-pionship, brothers Callum and SeanFarrelly were both in career best form andfought sensationally.

Callum (12) qualified for the 38kg finalby beating Zac Brown of East Coastconvincingly.

He met a hard hitting opponent in thefinal in Nico Nicolson, but the Te Awa-mutu Intermediate School boxer’ssuperior speed and fitness won the day.

Callum was completely dominant in thethird and final round, landing an array ofwell directed shots to win 15-5.

Brother Sean (15) met a very experi-enced fighter in his 43kg final, but nevertook a backward step against ChristopherMooney of Hawkes Bay.

While it was a close fight, Sean landed aseries of telling shots in the first roundthat his opponent never recovered from.Sean’s superior fitness shone throughwhen his rival tried to pour it on in the lastround. The Te Awamutu College boxerkept fighting back and took the win 9-7.

Luke Jeffries (15), also from Te Awa-mutu College, was all class in winning hissecond national title in a row.

He recorded two decisive wins on hisway to the 50kg title, including stoppingConnaire Sullivan from Canterbury in thefirst round of their scheduled three roundfinal.

Aryk Whalley (17) was Te Awamutu’sfourth title winner. Ayrk recently movedto Perth with father and longstandingcoach Don Whalley.

They both returned home for the cham-pionship and Aryk Whalley was againmuch too good in his division.

He won the 60kg class decisively,

defeating Harrison Scaife of Wellington inthe final.

Tyler Jeffries recorded a good win inthe preliminary bouts but lost his final tobe national runner-up, while TysonWhalley, Sheldon Whalley, ReycheneWhalley and Kyrhowe Onehi all foughtwell and lost close matches.

Te Awamutu and Waikato coach RodJeffries commented that the town shouldbe very proud of their boxers. It was a

tough and testing tournament with theteam away in Christchurch for five days.

‘‘These fighters train as hard as anysport I know and the Te Awamutu Club isregarded as having among the fittest andbest prepared fighters in New Zealand,’’says the Farrelly brothers’ father, Ian.

‘‘We have been training four nights perweek at the gym since the start of Februaryand it showed with a fine haul of resultsagain.’’

Scholarship Programmes IncludingInnovative New Leadership AwardSt Mary’s Diocesan School Principal Lynley Rawston announced the addition of a new

Leadership Scholarship to its Scholarship Programme earlier this week.

“Our school encourages students to develop in all aspects, academic, sporting, the

arts and in particular to build in confi dence and ability as courageous leaders in society.

We are unashamedly proud that 70% of our senior students have taken advantage of

opportunities and training in leadership,” Ms Rawston said.

The Leadership Scholarship, aimed to attract young women entering Year 9 who have all

round academic ability and excellence in roles either in the community or their school,

will provide a fee subsidy for two years as well as offer access to mentors; opportunities

to join and assume leadership roles in student organisations at the school, participate

in annual service projects and learn more about civic responsibility. Ms Rawston

continued “As these students leave St Mary’s towards their future, they will be better

prepared to become leaders in the workforce, their community and beyond.”

These days, our young people are sought to volunteer in numerous positions even before

they begin their career. Student groups, sports’ associations, community volunteer

groups all need offi ce holders, and people who have skills in encouraging and working

with others. “It’s sad to see worthwhile groups going into recess for lack of leadership,

at St Mary’s we believe these volunteer roles are vitally important and an ideal place

for students to learn and extend life skills essential for their future, no matter what role

or occupation they take on. We have a duty to support worthy volunteer organisations

and this is one way we can contribute to the community while building our students’

leadership abilities”.

“St Mary’s continues to offer four other scholarships as in the past. Music, Sports,

Boarding and Academic awards are also available to Year 9 students.” Competition

for these scholarships has always been very high, with selection made by interview or

exam. “Applicants need to complete the appropriate form, attend an interview before

a selection panel and those applying for the Academic Scholarship will of course need

to sit an exam.”

Applications close on Monday 8 November and interviews and the exam will be held at

10 am on Saturday 13 November – parents and family will be shown through the school

and are invited to participate in a light lunch at 12 noon. “Scholarship application forms

are available from St Mary’s School Offi ce or by downloading them from our website at

www.stmarysstratford.school.nz.”

TA siblings among NZ’s top snowboarders

TC021110SP17RUAPEHU freestyle snowboarding team member Dakota Craig.

Dakota and Fletcher Craig took to snow sports like ducks to waterBY COLIN THORSEN

TC021110SP17BHIGH FLYER: Fletcher Craig, winner of three silver and one bronzemedal at junior national snowboarding championships in Wanaka.

The Craig siblings of Te Awa-mutu are hugely committed to theirlove of snow boarding — makingthe long trek to Ohakune everyweekend to train.

If the weather is bad enough toprevent them getting on the snow, they train in a gym on a trampol-ine.

The dedication shown byDakota (15) and Fletcher (9) paid offbig time at the Junior NationalSnowboarding Championships inWanaka.

Competing in the half pipe, slopestyle, boarder cross and giantslalom, Fletcher gained three silvermedals and one bronze.

Dakota’s best placing in hersame four events was fifth overalland third in New Zealand.

In her three other events, sheplaced ninth overall and fifth inNew Zealand.

The Craigs are members of theRuapehu Freestyle snowboardingteam and have trained every week-end since June.

Dakota is one of two girls in theteam and Fletcher is one of theyoungest.

‘‘The bigger boys push us alongto try new jumps and tricks,’’ saysFletcher.

Their mother Symone says herchildren’s love of snow boardingstemmed from her taking them toSnowPlanet one day as a fun hol-iday activity as she used to ski.

‘‘They got on a pair of skis andthey were like little ducks in water— they took to it instantly.

‘‘We then went down to themountain the following winter andgot them on snowboards and theywere away.’’

Mrs Craig says one lesson andthey were hooked and haven’tlooked back.

‘‘My husband and I both took upsnowboarding to support the kids.’’

The kids train at Ruapehu and

travel to the South Island duringthe season for further training.

Dakota is a former Te AwamutuPrimary School student, nowattending Waikato Diocesan Schoolfor girls, while Fletcher currentlyattends Puahue Primary School.

This year they have had a rangeof sponsors that contributed togetting them to Wanaka — Glennand Jodie Tervit (Fleet Image) Pamand Ken Osborne, HydroFlowChristchurch, Pete and JoanneScheres, Rocky Mountain Chaletsand Craig Sylvester (Total Auto-

motive).Fletcher also plays rugby (his

coach David Fox let him leave theteam early to begin his training atRuapehu). Dakota is an avid netballplayer for her school but wasunable to play this year due to hercommitment to the snowboardingteam.

The Craigs have been invited toCanada (by their coaches, RyanEnfield of USA and Andrew Manuelof Canada) to train for a season, which is currently in the planningstages.
