  • 27700 Series OverviewUnparalleled performance

Both 7700 Series models benefit from improved plasma stabil-ity and tolerance of organic solvents, as a result of a new frequency-matching RF generator.

The 7700 features higher sensitivity and lower random back-ground compared to the 7500, due to a redesigned ion lens.

The new ORS3 provides enhanced interference removal capa-bility in He cell gas mode. This delivers unambiguous and reli-able quantification, even in complex matrices.

    Enhanced ease of use

One-click Plasma Setting is provided on both models, for simpler, more reproducible plasma optimization. Agilent'sunique High Matrix Introduction (HMI) capability is standardon the 7700x model, and pre-set plasma conditions for hotand cool plasma operation are provided with the 7700s.

Expert AutoTuning delivers faster, more consistent tuning, giving reproducible instrument performance, even with multiple operators. Routine maintenance is expedited by one-touch torch positioning and tool-free removal and refitting ofthe sampling cone.

New MassHunter software with Excel 2007 enhances dataanalysis and reporting.

    Reduced operating costs

Lower exhaust flow rate (especially important in clean rooms)reduces installation costs.

The 7700 uses MassHunter based software, which is consis-tent across all Agilent MS platforms, thereby simplifying andcutting the cost of staff training.

    Significantly smaller footprint

At only 730 mm wide and weighing 115 kg, the 7700 is easilythe worlds smallest ICP-MS saving on valuable benchspace, and simplifying lab planning. The footprint of the 7700is >30% smaller than any other ICP-MS, but performance andusability have been improved. Despite the small cabinet size, the ion path length is actually longer than the 7500, and usermaintenance and service access is improved.

    Reduced environmental impact

The 7700 mainframe is extraordinarily light for an ICP-MS(only 138 kg when packed for air-freight), so CO2 emissionsfrom transportation are reduced.

Stainless steel panels are used throughout the cabinet, reducing the amount of paint required.

Agilent is committed to eliminating toxic compounds fromelectronic components, promoting recyclability of plastics, and using recycled packing materials.

Model Selection Guide Agilent 7700x workhorse mainframe for reliable high-throughput analysis of unknown samples.

The 7700x features the ORS3 with a single cell gas line for Hecollision mode, which is the standard mode for most elementsin most sample types. This simplifies method developmentand routine analysis, by using consistent cell conditions for allinterfered elements.

The ORS3 significantly improves He mode performance forproblematic elements such as P, S, Se, and Fe, which meansthat H2 reaction mode is no longer needed for common appli-cations. Eliminating the added complexity and uncertaintyassociated with using H2 (or mixed cell gas) reaction modegreatly simplifies operation and improves data quality.

HMI capability is standard on the 7700x, reducing samplepreparation time and costs by significantly increasing matrixtolerance for the direct analysis of % level total dissolvedsolids (TDS) samples.

Pre-set Plasma Conditions allow consistent setup from day today and between operators, which is essential for reliabledata quality in high throughput labs. Optimum plasma condi-tions are simply selected using the One-click Plasma Setting.

The combination of He mode, HMI and Pre-set tuning condi-tions simplifies operation while delivering consistently accu-rate results and superior performance in routine applications.

    Agilent 7700s unparalleled semiconductor analysis.

The Agilent 7700s mainframe provides ultra-high perfor-mance, and is configured for semiconductor analysis andclean-room operation. It offers the ultimate in detectionpower and interference removal capability, with all industrystandard analytical methods (normal mode, collision, reactioncell operation AND cool plasma), provided in a single instru-ment. This is unique in ICP-MS.

Additional flexibility is provided by the inclusion of a H2 reac-tion gas line for the ORS3, and the addition of a 5th carrier gasline. The extra carrier gas line is used for Ar/O2 gas additionfor organic solvent analysis, or He carrier gas for laser abla-tion. Both additional gas lines are also available as options forthe 7700x.

The 7700s is compatible with methods, tuning and acquisitiontemplates to simplify operation for all typical semiconductorapplications.

  • 3Specifications

Sample Introduction SystemThe standard sample introduction system includes an effi-cient, low-flow concentric nebulizer, a temperature-controlledspray chamber and a high precision, 10-roller peristaltic pump. All components are optimized for high throughput routineanalyses of samples with TDS up to 0.2% (2000 ppm).

    Nebulizer

Concentric nebulizer, made from glass (on the 7700x) or PFA (on the 7700s) with low sample flow rate as standard(~0.2 mL/min).

Spray Chamber: Quartz, low-volume, Scott-type double-passspray chamber, provides improved removal of larger aerosoldroplets, compared to cyclonic or impact-bead designs.Peltier-cooling eliminates the need for a separate externalcooling water supply.

    Controlled temperature range: 5 C to +20 C (with instrument cooling water at 15 to 30 C)

Peristaltic Pump: Low-pulsation, high-precision 10-roller peri-staltic pump, with 3 separate channels, for precise delivery ofsample and internal standard (ISTD), plus spray chamberdrain.

    High Matrix Introduction Capability

Agilent's unique HMI Aerosol Dilution technology, standardon the 7700x, extends the TDS range to percent level, whileeliminating the added costs, time and potential errors of con-ventional liquid dilution.

PlasmaRF generator: High power-transfer efficiency and mainte-nance-free solid state digital drive 27 MHz RF generator withvariable-frequency impedance matching. Provides significantlyimproved tolerance of changes in sample matrix; even highlyvolatile organic solvents can be introduced without affectingplasma stability.

    RF power range: 500 W to 1600 W, in steps of 10 W.

Torch: Easy-mount, one-piece quartz torch with 2.5 mm inter-nal diameter (id) injector. The exceptionally wide torch injec-tor produces a highly robust plasma that efficiently decom-poses the sample matrix, minimizing routine interface cleaning.

Torch position: Stepper-motor controlled in three axes (hori-zontal, vertical and sampling depth) in 0.1 mm steps. ExpertAutoTuning delivers quick and reliable optimization followingmaintenance.

Horizontal and vertical position: 2 mm

Sampling depth: 3 to 28 mm

ShieldTorch System: Agilent's unique Shield Torch System(STS) precisely controls plasma potential and ion energy essential to achieve high performance in He mode and coolplasma operation.

InterfaceSampling cone: 1 mm diameter orifice, Ni-tipped (7700x) orPt-tipped (7700s) with Cu base. Easy access to the interfaceregion for routine maintenance; no tools are required forremoval or refitting of sampling cone. The large cone-retain-ing ring insures reliable thermal contact and reproducible fit-ting, even with different operators, giving dependable long-term performance.

Skimmer cone: 0.4 mm diameter orifice, Ni (7700x) or Pt-tipped (7700s). Precisely controlled skimmer tip temperatureensures minimal matrix condensation, providing good toler-ance to high matrix samples. Small skimmer orifice reducesmatrix contamination of the high vacuum region, reducingmaintenance.

Ion LensThe redesigned extraction and off-axis ion lens of the 7700provides high ion transmission (high sensitivity) and lowbackgrounds, combined with uniform mass response (thesame sensitivity across the mass range).

The lens is in front of the gate valve, and so can be accessedeasily for scheduled cleaning, without venting the vacuumsystem.

Extraction lens: Positioned behind the skimmer cone, theextraction lens focuses the ions as they enter the intermedi-ate vacuum stage, providing high ion transmission across themass range. The lens design gives the characteristic "flat"mass response of the 7700, and operates at fixed voltage forsimple, reliable tuning.

Off-axis Omega lens: Protects the ORS3 cell and high vacuumregion from contamination, by separating neutral species andphotons from the ion beam. This contributes to the minimalmass bias and low background noise.

  • 4Octopole Reaction SystemThe 7700 Series incorporates a new, 3rd generation cell, theORS3, which provides superior interference removal in Hemode. The ORS3 is longer and narrower than the 7500 SeriesORS cell, and operates at higher frequency, higher cell gaspressure and higher kinetic energy discrimination (KED) biasvoltage. This delivers improved performance in He mode, elim-inating the need for reactive cell gases for all applicationsexcept semiconductor.

Octopole: Comprises a thermally stabilized cell with a 12 MHzoctopole ion guide operated with fixed RF amplitude for thefull mass range. Permits fast analysis with uniform conditions, for signal stability and consistent interference removal. Anoctopole provides both high ion transmission and superior ionfocusing, minimizing ion scattering at the high cell pressuresrequired for effective KED.

He cell mode as standard: Only the combination of narrowion energy distribution due to ShieldTorch and the 7700'sunique octopole-based cell enables efficient removal of inter-ferences using an inert cell gas (He) and KED. He mode pro-vides several critical advantages compared to reactive cellgases:

He mode is effective for all polyatomic interferences, notjust reactive polyatomics

Since He is inert, no new interferences are produced, soreliable results are obtained regardless of the matrix

Unlike a reactive cell gas, He does not react with any analytes, so consistent and predictable sensitivity is maintained

He mode is suitable for all analytes (no-gas mode can be usedfor uninterfered analytes) and can be used reliably for com-pletely unknown sample matrices a unique capability of the7700. The use of He cell gas also eliminates safety issuesrelated to reactive gases such as H2, H2 mixes or NH3.

Cell gas control: The 7700x has a single He cell gas con-troller, while the 7700s adds a second (reaction) gas line.Other cell gases are available for research applications, forexample, H2 option (for the 7700x), and Xe or NH3.

If multiple cell gases are used in a method, the cell gas isautomatically changed with minimal switching time (about 5 sec), due to the low internal volume of the octopole-basedcell.

Mass AnalyzerQuadrupole mass spectrometer: The 7700 uses a high-fre-quency (~3 MHz) quadrupole with true hyperbolic rod profile, unique in ICP-MS. A hyperbolic profile quadrupole providessuperior ion transmission, resolution and abundance sensitivi-ty at standard settings, thereby eliminating the need for multi-ple resolution settings to separate adjacent peaks.

    Mass range: 2 260 amu

    Mass scan speed:

Slew rate (Li to U, no intervening peaks): 22,638 amu/s

Scan speed (Li to U, plus data collection at 40 interveningmasses): 2852 amu/s

    Mass resolution:

    Variable from < 0.3 amu to > 1.0 amu

    Typical mass calibration stabililty

    < 0.05 amu per day; < 0.1 amu per 6 months

    Abundance Sensitivity (at Cs):

    Low Mass side: 5 107

    High Mass side: 1 107

Detector: Unique, auto-switching, dual-mode discrete dynodeelectron multiplier detector provides a full 9 orders dynamicrange with standard hardware and operating conditions.

Fast measurement of transient signals is provided, due to theuse of a proprietary analog amplifier, which operates at thesame short integration time (100 s) in both pulse and analogmode.

    Minimum dwell time: 100 s

    Dynamic Range: 9 orders

Vacuum SystemThree-stage differential vacuum system uses a single, split-flow turbo molecular pump and single external rotary pumpfor fast pump-down and simple maintenance. UniqueAutoRecover mode returns the 7700 to standby (pumping)state when electrical power is resumed after a power failure, saving valuable time by automatically restarting the vacuumsystem following an overnight power failure.

The rotary pump is external to the cabinet, and can thereforebe located conveniently in the laboratory. Alternatively, thepump can be placed outside the laboratory, which may requirethe extended 3 m vacuum hose option. The rotary pump hoseon the Agilent 7700s is chemically inert for superior resis-tance to highly corrosive acids.
