Mackenzie College, this week, hosted a visit and speech by former student and motivational speaker, Korrin Barrett.

It was a sudden and devastating attack of septicaemia that claimed Korrin Barrett’s limbs back in 2012. But since that life or death decision, the vibrant 38-year-old Brisbane woman, has made sure that her limbs are the only thing she’s lost.

Third International Starlight Festival at Aoraki/Mount Cook, 13-15 October 2017

The Third International Starlight Festival will be held at the Hermitage, Mount Cook over three days in 2017, 13-15 October. The Festival will celebrate the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve (www.darkskyreserve.org.nz) whose mission is to encourage and protect dark skies free of light pollution in the Mackenzie, and to promote star gazing and astro-tourism. We do this by organizing a Starlight Festival every second year for the benefit of the public and international tourists. Astro-tourism in the Mackenzie at Tekapo and Mt Cook is now one of New Zealand’s biggest tourist attractions, with about 200,000 people coming to Tekapo annually, many from Asia and Europe, to see the stars.

The 2017 Festival will be our third, after very successful events in 2013 in Tekapo and 2015 at Twizel. The Festival will be a mixture of events including lectures, workshops, exhibitions, videos and documentaries, planetarium shows and of course, star-gazing.

We have engaged three world-class speakers to come to Mount Cook for the Festival. They are:

Dr Natalie Batalha NASA Ames space scientist, Moffett Field (near San Francisco), California. (Time Magazine in April 2017 named her as one of the 100 most influential people on the planet). She will talk about ‘A Planet for Goldilocks’ and the search for habitable Earth-like planets

Kevin Govender, Director of the Office of Astronomy for Development of the International Astronomical Union, based in Cape Town, South Africa. He will talk about ‘Astronomy for Humankind’.

Sze-leung Cheung, Director of the Office of Astronomy Outreach of the International Astronomical Union, based in Tokyo, Japan. He will talk about ‘The threat of LEDs to astronomy and how to build a dark-sky-friendly future’.

All three are outstanding speakers, and Sze-leung Cheung is fluent in Chinese as well as English, so can give his talk in both languages to attract overseas tourists.

More details on the Third Starlight Festival and our keynote speakers are at www.starlightfestival.org.nz. On-line ticket sales are now open from the website. The website also has all accommodation options in and near Mount Cook.

Mark Gee from Wellington will show some of his stunning night-sky time-lapse animations and on the morning of October 14 will conduct an astro-photography workshop for everyone wanting to learn these techniques. Steve Chadwick from Palmerston North will show his amazing night sky animations and photography, as will also the renowned Fairlie and Tekapo astrophotographer, Fraser Gunn. There is also an astro-photography exhibition with nine of New Zealand’s top astro-photographers exhibiting their images.

The Festival features videos, exhibitions, workshops, planetarium shows and stargazing (at the new Mt Cook Observatory) over three days, 13-15 October.

Pukaki Observatory at the Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat (at the southern end of Lake Pukaki) will host a special stargazing and wine-tasting evening on Sunday October 15 with hosts Kaye and Like Paardekooper and astrophotographer Mark Gee.

MACKENZIE OLD GIRLS NETBALL

The Mackenzie Old Girls Netball team would like to thank all the amazing supporters we have had during the season and all those that came to cheer us on during the final in Timaru. It was an intense game that resulted in a draw, then went into extra time and unfortunately we lost by two.

Once again it has been an outstanding effort from this team who were nominated in the South Canterbury Sports Awards 2016 and this year were awarded trophies for Runner-Up in the South Canterbury Premier Netball competition for the second year in a row; best goal differential; and Stacey Grant received the Senior Player of the Year for 2017. Stacey Grant, Aleisha Chitty and Cindy Robertson (player/coach) also represented the 2017 South Canterbury team.

We appreciate the commitment and dedication from all the team throughout the year and their friends and family who support them.

The Mackenzie St John Area Committee were pleased to hold a dinner for Trevor Edmonston last Saturday, where they acknowledged and thanked him for over 50 years' service to the local community.

Trevor is one of our quiet ‘get things done’ people in our community with never a word said. Over the years he has been an Ambulance Officer, Events Volunteer, an Area Committee Member and in 2009 was admitted to the Order as a Member. He will be sorely missed on our committee and we wish him all the best.

We were joined by family, friends and fellow volunteers. Trevor was presented with a small gift and Joanne flowers. We can never forget the partners of our volunteers, as while the volunteer is out helping others, those at home are left eating dinner by themselves or attending functions alone. We acknowledge their support too.

Farewell Fairlie After 10 years of sharing your community, we have decided to move on to our next adventure.

We would like to thank the Fairlie folk for all your support over those years and for making us very welcome. It has been a pleasure to have been part of your community and to have made some fantastic friends and neighbours.

We will endeavour to pop by from time to time for a coffee and a pie !!

Thank you everyone, Gary & Christina Boulton

We had a fun finish to the netball season for our Year 5-6 and 7-8 teams when they competed in Netball South Canterbury’s Jellybean Tournament a couple of weeks ago.

With four short games during the day, the chance to dress up, have shooting competitions and a ‘dance off’ - the kids had a fantastic day! Molli O’Neill won the Year 7-8 shooting competition and the Year 5-6 team won the dance off (we think the Year 7-8 team should have won too but they couldn’t let Mackenzie have a clean sweep!). The Year 7-8 team also competed in the Christchurch Jellybean Tournament during the season and had a great night away together (despite the horrible Christchurch weather!). We hope to compete in more of these tournaments next

year as they are great fun and a great team bonding

experience.

Faster Internet Fantastic for Fairlie!

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says faster internet will bring wide-ranging benefits for Fairlie.

The Government is to invest a further $270 million to roll out Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) to 190 more small towns, including Fairlie.

Ms Dean says its a welcome boost for the community. “Many local businesses are reliant on the internet for the day-to-day running of their business - having UFB will allow them to operate more effectively and efficiently.”

“Access to faster and more reliable internet helps develop a productive and competitive economy, improves health and educational outcomes and creates more jobs.”

The Government investment will also see mobile coverage extended to Albury, The Limestone Valley and around the Tasman Glacier walks, under the Mobile Black Spot Fund.

“The main benefit here is around public safety - if an accident occurs, it becomes far easier to alert emergency services. These areas are well known for extreme weather conditions and people need to be able to contact authorities should a situation arise,” says Ms Dean.

“I have long championed the need for towns in this region to have access to faster internet and more comprehensive mobile coverage - I look forward to seeing the roll-out take place."

The completion date of the UFB network has also been brought forward two years. By the end of 2022, the UFB programme will provide more than four million New Zealanders with access to world-class internet.

Freemasonry - The Beginning

Freemasonry is the oldest and largest fraternal organisation in the world. There are 6 million Freemasons in the world 4,800 in Great Britain, 2 million in United States of America and 6,700 in New Zealand in 224 Lodges. Numbers peaked in the 1970’s at 50,000. 454 members have been initiated into The Mackenzie Lodge since its inception 123 years ago. At the end of the first decade there were 87 members and at present there are 60 brethren, living in various parts of New Zealand.

While the origins of Freemasonry are lost in the course of time, the movement started in Europe with the stone masons who built the castles and cathedrals in medieval times. They formed Lodges to protect their craft. The first written information of Freemasonry was found in the 14

th

century in England. The Grand Lodge of England was formed in London by four lodges in 1717, later in Ireland and Scotland and from there spread around the British Empire and the rest of the world.

Freemasonry came to New Zealand with the early settlers. The first Lodge was formed in 1842 in Auckland and was known as The Ara Lodge No 1. Freemasonry soon spread throughout New Zealand and most towns have a lodge room. In 1890 the Grand Lodge of New Zealand was formed. Prior to that lodges had English, Irish or Scottish constitutions. There are still some Lodges run under these constitutions.

Freemasonry in Fairlie was started in July 1894 with the formation of The Mackenzie Lodge No 93. It was sponsored by the Caledonian Lodge No 16 in Timaru. The meetings were held in the school house for the first 12 months. Then an offer of $5.00 a year for hire was received from the Fairlie Hall Committee. It proved to be not very satisfactory through firewood not being available and the difficulty of getting the key.

The first lodge rooms were built in Fairlie in 1898 at the cost of £219/17/3. In 1906 the refectory was added at the cost of £180.00, £150.00 of which was borrowed from the Bank of New Zealand. In 1914 water was piped to the hall and gas lighting was installed. Other improvements included putting a ceiling in the Lodge rooms and renovating the toilet and kitchen. During 1960 the roof was repainted and the exterior walls were plastered. Several attempts were made to heat this very cold building without much success.

In February 2012, the building at 24 Gall Street was sold

and with money from other South Canterbury lodges

which had closed, a new modern building costing

$212,200 was built at 44 Gall Street. It was opened

31st August 2013.

36.5% increase (up 12,000 to 43,436 guest nights) compared to

June 2016. For the last five years the region has seen a steady

growth of guest nights with an average of 13% increase year on

year. (Commercial Accommodation Monitor, StatisticsNZ)

South Island Journeys Campaign

A joint venture with Christchurch Airport and Tourism New Zealand,

this campaign highlights various road trip itineraries throughout the

South Island targeting the Australian market with a $1.4million media spend. Tourism operators have had the opportunity to be involved by

loading incentive or value-added packages to the campaign pages on

newzealand.com. This is in market from 11 September to 5 November and we look forward to seeing more Australians exploring the

region.

I wonder if you can help me?

Do you know anyone in the region who operates a wonderful B&B in a

rural setting? Farmstay accommodation has huge business growth

opportunities throughout Canterbury.

So what is a farmstay? Guests seek hosted bed and breakfast style accommodation in a rural setting with animals that can be fed,

nurtured and photographed. If you know of a property that sounds like this description, please pass on my details to the hosts or

contact me, I would be so excited!

If you have any questions related to tourism in the Mackenzie region, please feel free to contact myself either by phone or email. Annabelle Bray

Catherine Rose - Mackenzie Physio and Pilates: It’s that time of year… Spring is in the air, we are emerging from a full on winter and keen to enjoy what the season has to offer. Before you get out there walking, gardening, etc, it is advisable to do a quick personal WOF! Start slow, gradually build up to the fitness level you hope to enjoy through the warmer months.

Easy to say, but where do you start?

Any aches and pains from before are unlikely to go away if ignored and actually may multiply as your body tries to do what is requested of it and adapts. Please do not ignore! Try a few gentle stretches. If that doesn’t sort it, seek professional advice so that the problem can be dealt with before it gets too big.

Warning - all of the simple stretches that follow are to be done with caution. If in doubt, please seek advice from your healthcare professional before trying.

Backs: they need the core muscles. The easiest way to engage these is to try to stop the water works ... not actually while passing water, but “think it’. Not a buttock tightening … tricky to do. If any issues, seek advice. Engage these while bending your back forwards and back. Repeat a few times, then side to side.

Necks: turn side to side. Take as far as you can each way. Do not push into pain, but a good stretch.

Shoulders: arm circles. Give the arms and shoulder blades a good stretch as you reach your hands as far away from you as you can in a big circle. Again, do not push into pain, but feel the stretch. Sitting, twist round each way as far as you can. If sitting on a hardback chair try to hold the back of the chair for a few seconds. This will stretch the mid back.

Hips: Holding the bench top or back of a chair, bend at the hip to lift your knee in front of you. Roll the hip out and back in. A couple of times each hip.

Ankles: A few rotations of the ankles each way, easiest in sitting.

Knees: must not be forgotten. Please use a kneeler to make a soft surface when weeding! It is a good practice to not focus on one area for any length of time when in the garden. For example, if you are pruning, move from one plant to another every few minutes so that you are not in one position for too long. If there is digging to be done, pace yourself. Take regular breaks and stretch as described at the start of this article. It is always best to seek professional help before the problem gets too big. Physical issues are often easy to settle with a few simple exercises. Physiotherapists are available in Fairlie, Tekapo and surrounding areas.

Remember, prevention is better than cure.

Failed Inspections Cost $180

A reminder to builders, plumbers or anybody responsible for carrying out building work that requires Council to inspect - when Building Inspectors fail an inspection an additional fee of $180 may be charged for the inspector to revisit the job.

This and other outstanding fees are to be paid prior to issuing the Code Compliance Certificate. So to minimize the risk of inspections failing, here are some common issues to be aware of:

Approved plans not onsite.

The Licenced Building Practitioner or Certified Plumber/Drainlayer is not onsite.

Work not ready to inspect.

Work not carried out as per the approved plans.

To avoid additional fees, please contact the Inspector well before the inspection date to discuss matters that may cause the inspection to fail.

MACKENZIE COLLEGE

This is an invitational ski race designed for Primary

School Skiers to have a go! Those students attending

our local Primary Schools are encouraged to enter at

www.fairlie.school.nz. Suitable for those skiing at a

high Level 2 ability and able to handle the Pommer.

Late entries accepted.

The Aoraki Secondary Schools Snowsports Championships were held at Mt Dobson Ski Area on August 27th. Great weather conditions and good snow meant that some good results were produced. Mackenzie College were represented by 11 skiers in the skiing categories and had five snowboarders also competing.

An excellent performance was delivered by Gregor Staley, who won the Senior Boys division with convincing times against some strong opposition. Philip Knubley finished 13th. Amber Gallagher finished 2nd in the Senior Girls division and Caitlin Holmes 7th. The team of Gregor, Philip, Amber and Caitlin finished 2nd in the Mixed Teams category.

The Junior Team had a number of Year 7 students who were racing for Mackenzie College for the first time. The boys finished in 1st place in the Junior Boys team category with Talen Hignett placed 5th, Jamie Wansbrough 6th, Luke Jordan 11th and Lochie Foote 13th. Conner Stevens also raced for the first time and was placed 12th.

In the snowboarding, Joel Adams had some great runs to take out the Senior Boys title. Hamish Clarke was placed 13th equal with Willie Mould, and Alex Holmes came 18th. This team of boys came 2nd equal in the Senior Boys Snowboarding team. Also racing on the day was Angus Clarke who came 8th in the snowboarding, racing against seniors.

Once again we are sending 10 students on the week long Spirit of Adventure voyage as part of developing their leadership, resilience and team-work skills. The students: Cassie Anderson, Gemma Anderson, Hamish Clarke, Sam Hay, Arthur Holden, Willie Mould, Conner Potter, Sam Roy, Haley Scully and Chelsea Sheehan have worked hard, along with their families, to fundraise as much of the costs as possible.

The fundraising activities have included raffling a ride on mower, organising a quiz night, running a movie evening, rock picking paddocks, cleaning woolsheds, clearing flood debris and stacking firewood. The team have also received funding from the Len Smith fund.

MACKENZIE COLLEGE

Fairlie Primary School has a specialist Science

Teacher for one day per week to enhance our

teaching programme around this important

curriculum area. We have an EnviroSchool’s team

consisting of students and parents.

Our vege gardens are in the process of being

planted. Keep an eye out at Heartlands Resource

Centre when the veges become ready. We love

being able to share what we grow with our

community.

Takahe pupils below, enjoyed getting their hands

dirty, building the schools new 'bug garden'. A bug

garden is an area of decomposing logs and stumps

that becomes home to all kinds of wood boring

insects. It is a great place for kids to explore and

catch bugs that they can observe and study. It is

also a very useful 'hands on' teaching facility.
