OVERVIEW New English as a Second Language Grades 10–11–12 Resources

This list of English as a Second Language Grades 10–11–12 resources contains resources that have been authorized for use in Alberta schools. Alberta Learning selects and authorizes the best possible instructional materials for the implementation of approved programs of study. The resource authorization categories are student basic, student support or authorized teaching, and the status is noted for each resource.

Student Basic learning resources are those student learning resources authorized by Alberta Learning as the most appropriate for addressing the majority of outcomes of the course(s) or substantial components of the course(s); or the most appropriate for meeting general outcomes across two or more grade levels.

Student Support learning resources are those student learning resources authorized by Alberta Learning to assist in addressing some of the outcomes of the course(s) or components of the course(s); or to assist in meeting the outcomes across two or more grade levels.

Authorized Teaching resources are those teaching resources identified as the best available resources to support the implementation of programs of study and courses; they may be teacher guides to accompany student resources or teacher professional resources. The authorized teaching guides are listed with the student resources.

Note: Alberta Learning strongly recommends that teachers read all selections in the student resources and all activities in the teacher guides prior to using them with students. Careful consideration should be given to the sensitivities of both the student audience and the community.

SENIOR HIGH ESL PROGRAM ORGANIZATION (LEVELS) The Senior High English as a Second Language Program of Studies is organized into five levels. Level 1 is intended for students who are acquiring literacy for the first time or who have had

significant gaps in previous schooling.

Level 2 in intended for students who have little or no experience with English prior to entering Alberta schools.

Level 3 is intended for students who have some competency in English and need a program focused specifically on language development for academic learning.

Level 4 is intended for students who are able to succeed in most high school courses with consistent support in English language development for academic learning.

Level 5 students receive assistance with subject specific language development in a variety of ways, such as in learning centres, from peer coaching and with teacher assistance.

ORGANIZATION OF THE RESOURCE LIST

The list of English as a Second Language (ESL) authorized resources is organized in two parts: Part I: Resource List: Basic, Support, Teaching

Student basic resources followed by student support and authorized teaching resources are listed alphabetically. Each entry provides the following information:

• title of resource • copyright date • type of authorization • levels(s) authorized for • format • summary description of the resource • supplier name, order number and price.

Part II: Annotated Bibliography Listed Alphabetically by Title

Each of the resources in Part I has a corresponding annotation in Part II. Each annotation identifies:

• the ESL level(s) for which the resource is authorized, the category of authorization (student basic, student support or authorized teaching, and if authorized for another curricular area)

• the format of the resource (print, video, CD-ROM) by the use of icon • publisher information and notes where the resource is available. If a resource is a

part of a series, other authorized titles in the series are cross-referenced.

This series of booklets teaches readers about different elements of Canadian geography and culture. For example, All About CanadianAnimals explores the appearance, habitat, diet, predators, offspring, adaptations and special characteristics of Canadian animals, with eachbooklet focusing on a different animal. The booklets use a high-interest, low-vocabulary approach, and each title includes a glossary, a summaryand an index, as well as photographs and maps. This series could be used as a research resource for emerging readers. The content of manyof the titles would also fit in with units on science, social studies or nonfiction reading.

This comprehensive program helps students develop communicative competency across all language strands. The series has three levels, suitable for beginner to low-intermediate students. The student text at each level consists of 16 topically-related units. Each unit introduces newvocabularly and grammar, and provides opportunities for students to practise their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through a varietyof exercises and activities (listening materials are provided on the audiocassettes and CDs). Pair and group work opportunities are embeddedthroughout the text to encourage authentic communicative activities. Each student book has a corresponding workbook to give studentsadditional practice on their own or in the classroom. The workbooks are organized around the same 16 units as the student texts, with each unitin the workbooks divided into the following sections: Working with Words, Looking at Language, Reading and Thinking, and Showing What YouKnow. Each student book also has a corresponding teacher’s annotated edition that provides tape scripts, answer keys, step-by-stepinstructions for each unit, pronunciation tips, extension activities, cultural notes, and assessments.

Jigsaw 289266 42.05Authorized Teaching Resource

This resource is based on the notion of the “jigsaw classroom,” which takes a cooperative approach to learning. The binder contains sixreproducible readings based on contemporary social issues such as pollution, immigration and industrial accidents. Each of the readings istold from four different perspectives. Students are assigned to small “jigsaw” groups. These groups are then rearranged into “expert” groups, with each group receiving a different part of the reading to discuss, interpret and summarize. Students then reconvene with their original jigsawgroups to communicate their findings, come up with a comprehensive understanding of the issue and answer various questions about thereading. The author makes effective use of headings, paragraph markers, captions and diagrams to guide the reader. Cooperative skills sheetsoffer students opportunities to develop both specific reading skills and effective learning strategies for group work. The resource was designedfor adolescent and adult learners who need to develop their reading and discussion skills for application across the curriculum. The readingsand activities are written at three different language levels, making the resource well suited for use in multilevel classes. The binder alsoincludes an extensive rationale for the jigsaw strategy and instructions for use.

My Country, Our History is an introduction to Canadian history for students with little or no knowledge of the country’s past. The text begins withan introductory unit on Canada’s geography, government and people. It then progresses chronologically through the history of Canada fromConfederation through to 2002. These units deal with specific topics related to Canada’s settlement, development, economy and culture atvarious points in time. The final chapter on civics explains the rights and obligations of Canadian citizenship. Pre-reading questions areprovided, and comprehension and extension questions are included after each major section to stimulate discussion and writing. There arenumerous photographs, illustrations and other visuals interspersed throughout the text, and the page layout and font are user friendly. Thereading level of the text is approximately grade 9; however, the language is sequenced so that initial chapters are short and simply written, whilelater chapters use more complex language and sentence patterns. New vocabulary and important phrases are highlighted throughout the text. The teacher’s resource book explains how to use the student text, provides lesson notes for chapters, and offers a variety of reproducible studentmaterials for each chapter (e.g., graphic organizers, cloze activities, vocabulary puzzles, group activities, writing assignments, simulation androle-play activities). This resource would be suitable for teachers working with students at a wide range of levels.
