WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: Training and development opportunities that meet the workforce needs of business.

In 2015, a record number of nominations, 1040, were received for 329 different teachers in the school districts of Auburndale, Columbus Catholic, Granton, Greenwood, Marshfield, Pittsville, Spencer, Immanuel Lutheran, and St. Joseph School-Stratford.

The purpose of the Crystal Apple Program is to improve community awareness of the quality of education in the Central Wisconsin area. It accomplishes this by recognizing and rewarding educators who use innovative teaching methods that meet today’s challenges.

2015 celebrated the 13th annual event, in which 24 Teachers of Distinction were recognized for their excellence in education. Four of those educators were selected as Crystal Apple recipients.

Over 600 middle school students from Marshfield and Pittsville participated in the 4th Annual North Central WI “Heavy Metal Tour.” These students and educators toured several businesses to learn more about the companies located in the Marshfield area. This partnership between educators and the business community gave businesses the chance to showcase their facilities and workforce opportunities while exposing students to a variety of industry career options.

The Reality StoreOver 500 middle school students from Auburndale, Columbus Catholic, Greenwood, Loyal, Pittsville, Marshfield Spencer, Immanuel Lutheran, St. Joseph’s Catholic, and Trinity Lutheran schools were presented with the challenge of balancing a monthly budget during the 2015 Reality Stores.

Students were assigned an income and family scenario and learned to calculate their net monthly income from a gross salary. With their budget in hand, they visited the store to arrange for housing, utilities, transportation, childcare, and groceries – basically, all the monthly expenses a household faces. The students learned how quickly expenses add up, and students began to understand the importance of education and career choices. Thanks to the 60 business volunteers who helped bring this hands-on-learning experience to area eighth graders.

Marshfield Young ProfessionalsThe Marshfield Young Professionals (MYP) is a personal and professional development program of MACCI that encourages young business people to interact socially, exchange ideas, share common interests, learn more about the area’s business community, and engage in the community’s future. The mission of MYP is to engage and empower young professionals through community, professional, and social opportunities; creating and promoting an environment to attract and retain professionals. In 2015, this group’s membership grew significantly through awareness, business and community involvement.

Youth ApprenticeshipWisconsin’s Youth Apprenticeship program is a part of a statewide School-to-Career initiative. In 2015, nearly 40 area high school students received hands-on learning, along with related classroom instruction, in the following occupational areas of interest: Agriculture, Engineering, Finance, Health Science, Hospitality & Tourism, Information Technology, Manufacturing, Transportation, and Welding.

Nine high school seniors from Marshfield and Spencer schools explored a variety of health care career options through Health Career Connections. These students were able to make informed career decisions thanks to these participating businesses: Bents Chiropractic, Bethel Center, Companion Day Services, Dental Clinic of Marshfield, Golden LivingCenter-Three Oaks, Mabeus Dental Office, Marshfield YMCA, Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital, PreventionGenetics, ShopKo Pharmacy, Stoney River Assisted Living & Memory Care, and Walgreen’s Pharmacy.

ADVOCACY: Communications, issue education and government relations.

During the past 70 years, this organization has focused on being the voice and policy advocate for its business members. This has been accomplished by communicating with and educating members on local, state, and federal issues impacting their businesses, utilizing regular communications to create an effective relationship between government and business, and when necessary, taking action to support pro-business policies in creating a business-friendly environment.

MACCI has several resources at its disposal to accomplish its advocacy mission. Throughout the year MACCI made good uses of these resources to identify issues and maintain a legislative agenda to protect and promote businesses on a proactive basis, thereby monitoring issues and influencing policy makers at local, state, and federal levels.

MACCI provided membership with direct access to federal and state officials to discuss policy concerns. Visits included:

• Senators Johnson and Baldwin’s representatives

• Congressman Duffy’s representatives

• State Representatives Kulp and Spiros

• Wisconsin Department Secretaries Gottlieb, Maxwell and Stepp

Access to the following special events provided membership with the opportunity to learn about critical international, national and state issues from noted experts.

• Business Day

• State of Wisconsin Business

• Future Wisconsin Economic Summit

Educational forums held focused on important topics such as:

• Affordable Care Act Policy Update

• State Budget Review
