“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky.
Conscious breathing is my anchor.” ~ Thích Nhất Hạnh
Is your breath shallow? Do you hold your breath? This causes physical exhaustion and
anxiety. Pay attention to your breath today. Each time you catch yourself holding your
breath or breathing shallowly, stop and intentionally take 3 deep breaths. Just three
deep breaths! You will be astonished by the improvement this mindful breathing
creates in your day. Intentional breathing creates significant reduction in blood
pressure, the reduction of complaints related to anxiety, physical benefits and an
improvement in your quality-of-life. So, breathe well!
Here’s How: Focus on inhaling and exhaling through your nose with a closed mouth
for 3 or more breaths. You can do this quietly and undetected in public, or go some-
where private like a bathroom or car to breathe. Be sure you are breathing from your
lungs (behind your rib cage), not your chest or belly. When you inhale, you are taking
air in, so your lungs should expand to fill with air. When you exhale, you are releasing it
all, so your lungs should contract, squeezing out the carbon dioxide. Some people find
they do the reverse, which is incorrect.
Your breath is your life force. Breathe your spirit to life.

“There is a muscular energy in sunlight corresponding to
the spiritual energy of wind.” ~ Annie Dillard
While we need shelter for protection, being outside is also a natural habitat. When is
the last time you spent the day (or just the morning) outside? Only you know what
you like to do outdoors. You do not have to be outdoorsy to enjoy the outdoors. You
only need to step outside! Your goal is to see, hear, feel and smell the sunshine, fresh
air and plants.
Here’s How: If a hike in the woods or a day at the beach isn’t possible, improvise.
You can do simple things like sit on a bench on the sidewalk while sending some texts
on your phone, park at the end of the parking lot and walk to the front doors of the
store, or open a window in your apartment. Like to people watch? Go sit outside a
coffee shop or café. Love sports? Go watch a local game or join the team yourself!
Have a dog? Start walking it. Live close to work (or the store)? Walk or take a bike
when weather permits. Have a yard or porch? Use that space to have your meal, cof-
fee, talk on the phone or read a book.
Fresh air and Vitamin D will set you free.

“Every thought we think is creating our future.” ~ Louise L. Hay
No matter where you are or what you are doing, you can create a whole other world in
your imagination. Imagine who you want to be and how you want to feel. We are who
we think we are. Are you as kind to yourself as you are to other people? Do you choose
to use your mind to support and transform yourself? Our mind should be a tool we use,
not the dictator of our life.
Here’s How: We can speak or write affirmations anytime, anywhere. It is best to
choose 1 short sentence of only a few words. Think of an affirmation as a mantra you
can repeat easily over and over again. Keep it simple! Visualization does require you
close your eyes. 1-3 minutes of uninterrupted visualization can be more powerful than
you imagine! Try this: Visualize a burst of sunlight cleansing you of negative energy
from head to toe, while repeating this affirmation silently in your mind, “I choose life
and love”.
What you think, you become.

“To keep the body in good health is a duty...
otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”
~ Buddha
Walking, dancing, swimming and yoga are proven to be the most spiritually supportive
types of movement. Doing any of these activities for as little as 1 minute will
chemically change your mood and ignite your energy. Physical activity is not just about
losing weight or building muscle. It is also about cleansing the lymphatic system,
detoxing organs, balancing hormones and supporting a good night’s sleep.
Here’s How: It does not need to be complicated or expensive. Walk around your
neighborhood. Drive to a nearby park to walk. Dance in your living room to your
favorite song. Go outside for 5 minutes and play with your kids or a pet. Buy a DVD with
easy 15 minute yoga workouts and use it a few times a week. Feel like getting out? Go
to one yoga class a week. Other options: trampolines, jump ropes, treadmills, bikes,
hand weights, hula hoops, resistance bands… You can even find a way to work out while
watching TV! With so many options, there are no excuses.
If you want to feel alive and strong, turn your body systems on.

“If there is magic on this planet,
it is contained in water.” ~ Loran Eisley
Water is a conduit for cleansing, healing, energy and purification. It is the only liquid
that we must drink. Hating water or finding it boring is an illness caused by addiction to
other unnatural substances you consume. Water must be a part of your daily life. Drink
it, bathe in it, and feel gratitude for it. It is a sacred element with tremendous power
and value. If you have access to clean water, you are more fortunate that millions on
this planet who lack access to clean water. Want to feel gratitude? Be grateful for the
abundance of water in your home, community and country. Bringing more water into
your life will help you thrive and flourish.
Here’s How: Try any of the following--a hot bath, a quick shower, a walk on the beach,
sit near a fountain or stream or drink an entire glass of water. If you can, go for a swim.
Some towns have free pool memberships at certain times of the year. Even listening to
a recording of rainfall or water on your iPod will help your energy flow. Hearing, seeing,
feeling, tasting, and consuming water will cleanse and nourish you.
Get water in your body, on your body, or near your body.

“Invisible threads are the strongest ties.” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Connecting with others is not about a busy social calendar or large quantities of friends.
We all know you can be in a crowd and feel all alone. Connection is a mindful and
intimate experience. You can connect with people, animals and nature. Connection is
a natural human need. Even if you are naturally an introvert, you still need to connect
with others. And if you are a social butterfly, you need to make sure you have a certain
degree of meaningful connection in your life. What about texting or social media? It can
feel better than no connection at all, but just keep in mind that the positive effects don’t
last very long, and it can actually make you feel worse (according to recent research).
So, try not to connect in this way if you want to truly feel connected. True connection
with others validates our life experience and feeds our energy. Be sure you enjoy the
uplifting power surge of connecting with another.
Here’s How: Take the focus off of you. Chat with a stranger about the weather, ask the
cashier at the store a question, call a friend to see how he or she is doing, compliment
your plants while you water them, hug a tree in secret or play with a pet. You can also
volunteer, make time for your partner or children, go to a workout class, or work in a
garden.
Connecting with another living being will give your life meaning.

“Change your plate. Change your fate.” ~ Kris Carr
Green veggies have vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and disease-fighting
phytochemicals. Green veggies not only nourish, they also cleanse, repair and heal our
bodies. Even if you are a meat and carb lover, green veggies should still be a
predominant part of each meal. Green veggies are not just for juicers or vegetarians.
They are for everyone. You may think that the best way to recover from too much junk
food, fast food or alcohol is cutting calories or skipping meals. However, a big bowl
of salad, plate of steamed veggies or glass of green juice might be the best option to
cleanse out your over indulgence and reduce inflammation in your body. So, no matter
how or what you eat, make the decision to add more than enough green veggies to
your daily meals.
Here’s How: Raw, steamed or juiced –Eating green veggies will clear out liver toxins,
which will give your body more energy. This will chemically elevate your mood. Decide
which veggies you like the most. Figure out which way you like them prepared. Then
go with what you enjoy. Note: do not overcook or smother your veggies. Overcooking
veggies or smothering them in unhealthy ingredients defeats the purpose.
The chlorophyll in all green foods strengthens your immune system and uplifts
your mood.

“Our own brain, our own heart is our temple;
the philosophy is kindness.” ~ Dalai Lama
We spend our lives sitting, standing and lying down. It is rare we are ever inverted—
other than bending over to put on shoes or pick something up. Many of us only know of
yoga practitioners who go upside down in headstands and the like. However, any of us
can invert in as little as 3 minutes a day. No yoga class involved! Get the blood flowing
to your head! Why? Inverting allows the blood to flow to your brain and flush out the
stagnation. It improves circulation in our entire body. Inversions increase immunity.
They also energize and relax us. All you need to do is get your head below your heart.
Here’s How: Simply bending forward to try to touch your toes will work. Just do it
slowly, and stay there for 2-10 intentional breaths. Even better: lie on the floor with
your legs up the wall. It is so easy to do this when watching TV. 5 minutes in the
morning and then again in the evening can transform the way you feel.
Bring your brain and body back to life.
