It is with great pride and pleasure that I look forward to the 7th World Ayurveda Congress & AROGYA Expo 2016 being held at the Science Centre, Kolkata. I trust this will turn out to be one of the most significant events in the realm of Indian medicine, poised to make waves at a global level.

I congratulate the World Ayurveda Foundation and the Ministry of AYUSH for organising the event on a grand scale. Over the years we have seen the World Ayurveda Congress emerge as a powerful platform for Ayurveda. Scholars, students, policy makers and practitioners are known to congregate at the Congress for an update on evolving trends in the practice of Indian medicine.

Students, industry representatives and Ayurveda practitioners benefit from the interactive sessions, skill development workshops and symposia organised at the Congress. The Plenary sessions dwell upon the efficacy of traditional life science and discuss the scope of integrating Ayurveda into the realm of mainstream medical practice. Senior faculty and distinguished ‘Gurus’ of Ayurveda impact young minds, encouraging them to explore and experience the vital benefits of Ayurvedic medicine for a safer and the healthier future. The World Ayurveda Congress aims to nurture Ayurveda as a Way of Life and the AROGYA Expo elucidates the viability of Ayurveda and natural medicine as a robust and thriving source of alternate medicine. I wish the upcoming Congress the very best, and invite Ayurveda stakeholders from India and abroad, to take advantage of this mega event. Welcome, all!

Shri Shripad NaikHon’ble Minister for AYUSH Govt. of India

Anticipation soars high, as the 7th edition of the World Ayurveda Congress (WAC), being organized by the World Ayurveda Foundation coming up. Ever since its inception in 2002, the WAC has been one of the largest forums available to the Global Ayurveda fraternity, to converge on a dynamic and interactive platform of knowledge and experiential wisdom. The previous editions were attended by a number of international delegates and I expect an even greater participation this time round. The 6th WAC & AROGYA organised in New Delhi in November 2014 generated unparalleled response from all stakeholders. The presence of Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, at the valedictory function of 6th WAC bears testimony to this fact.

2. The AROGYA Expo, supported by the Ministry of AYUSH as part of WAC, has been a major attraction during every single WAC, with the general public thronging the stalls. Quite obviously, Ayurveda is making a steady foray into mainstream medicine.

3. This year, as Kolkata hosts the prestigious event, I invite Ayurveda enthusiasts from across India and abroad, to participate in large numbers, and benefit from this purposeful event. The Ministry of AYUSH actively supports the 7th WAC & AROGYA towards propagation of Ayurveda, and looks forward to an eminently successful Congress. I wish the Congress all success.

Dr. Soumya SwaminathanDirector-General, ICMR and Chair, National Organising Committee 7th World Ayurveda Congress

The World Ayurveda Foundation proudly presents the 7th edition of World Ayurveda Congress (WAC), a knowledge festival in all its grandeur, thanks to the active support of the Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India and numerous volunteers who make it happen. A mammoth event such as this entails coordinated efforts of the organizers, supporters, facilitators and the public at large.

Ayurveda is not just a system of medicine, but in context of the WAC platform, a scientific update for all concerned with holistic health. WAC seeks to establish Ayurvedic concepts duly validated for the benefit of the scholar and practitioner and facilitate the progressive nuance of Ayurveda as a distinctively recognized discipline of mainstream medicine. WAC provides a forum for initiatives, innovation, research, experiential understanding of basic Ayurveda fundamentals applicable for practice and therapy. WAC brings together – scholars, guides, practitioners, therapists, policy makers, public health officers, industry, the global Ayurved’ist and above all students. A knowledge festival in every way, it facilitates a global movement for progressive studies and dimensions as an Ayurveda update in every way. WAC is a network facilitating new dimensions to the delegates’ quest for a wider scope of study and practice.

In this 7th edition, I take the opportunity to especially invite modern medicine practitioners and biomedical researchers to observe ancient Ayurveda interventions, in the interest of public health and work towards promoting Ayurveda and allied forms of complementary medicine for prevention and the treatment of diseases where applicable. Placing the interest of our patients first, let us together actively participate in the 7th World Ayurveda Congress and contribute towards strengthening a safe and sustainable form of integrated medical practice.

Page 7: 7 th WAC Brochure

Advancement in modern sciences and paradigm shift in assessing the therapeutic value of old and exisitng medical practices often lead to the questioning of traditional approaches. Hence, sustenance of traditional sciences requires strong advocacy. Forums and groups that bring out the continued relevance and nuances of traditional therapies such as Ayurveda create a sure-footed impact over time.

Ayurveda - the ‘science of life’ is the source of most health care systems. However, like all things ancient and traditional, the practice of Ayurveda was beset with challenges, especially at the turn of the 20th century. At this point of time there was a strong felt need for a credible platform that would potentially disseminate authentic, unbiased, comprehensive information to national and global audiences. Acknowledging this need, Vijnana Bharati, as part of its Swadeshi Science Movement organized the first World Ayurveda Congress (WAC) in 2002 at Kochi. WAC was to grow into a potential platform to propagate Ayurveda during the new millennium. It is to be noted that despite the stated challenges, global awareness of Ayurveda was on the rise during this period. Increasingly, people across the world were re-discovering Ayurveda as a panacea for lifestyle-related and chronic diseases. Also, there was new evidence to validate Ayurvedic scriptures, thus piquing interest in this science.

Over 12 years and through six Congresses, the WAC has emerged as a global platform for all stakeholders for networking and engaging in intellectual exchange to strengthen the Ayurveda sector, reaffirm their sense of purpose and envision the future. WAC showcases advances in relevant fields, orients students and facilitates interaction between professionals and consumers, thus boosting Ayurveda commerce.

World Ayurveda Congress

GoAlS of WACHaving established itself as a vital platform for Ayurveda, WAC has set itself the following goals for the future:

• To facilitate acceptance and recognition for Ayurveda as a complete health system adoptable in all countries across the world

• To create appropriate platforms for ‘scientific backing’ of Ayurveda along with suitable infrastructure to popularize the outcomes

• To make Ayurveda an integral part of health-care management

Within the larger objectives, the specific key achievables identified are as follows:

• To create interest groups in 30 countries including those in the European Union, Association of South-East Asian Nations, the United Arab Emirates and North America

• To formulate international peer-review panels in basic and medical sciences for credible guidance and validation of research

• To initiate the creation of a network of medical institutions, laboratories, and universities across the world for aiding joint research and creating a database of management efficacy of Ayurveda

7th World Ayurveda Congress & AROGYA Expo 2016The 7th World Ayurveda Congress and AROGYA Expo, opens yet another window to a healthier future. The previous editions of WAC, held at Cochin, Pune, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Bhopal and Delhi, had witnessed a highly welcoming response. The highest number of delegates, numbering more than 4200 attended the WAC at Bengaluru. The largest number of visitors who participated in the AROGYA Expo was at Pune where more than 500,000 individuals took advantage of the Forum. The highest number of foreign delegates numbering 264 attended the Bengaluru Congress. The 7th WAC, scheduled be held at Science Centre, Kolkata from 1 - 4 December, has further fanned the expectations of stakeholders, Ayurveda practitioners and enthusiasts. Anticipating a huge response, the WAC Secretariat has made a booking for the venue through the Science City authorities.

Well, mere numbers do not make up the whole story, yet they speak volumes about the significance and magnitude of an event. The 7th WAC will hold 5 plenary sessions, 25 parallel sessions and a huge number of paper presentations, complemented by a series of associated events. Welcome, one and all!

Ayurveda, the centuries-old, tried and trusted form of Indian medicine has been growing popular amidst global nations in recent times. The World Ayurveda Congress and AROGYA Expo, held in various Indian cities since the year 2002, brings together an astounding number of Ayurveda practitioners, scientists and researchers from India and abroad, as well as teachers, students and health care professionals seeking safe and efficient treatment for a wide range of ailments and health conditions.

Ayurveda has a unique form of medicine, surgery, pathology and several other disciplines concerned with health care and curative medicine.

9

Page 10: 7 th WAC Brochure

In Charaka Samhita, the sage physician, Charaka illuminates that Ayurveda, the Knowledge of Life shall never attain finality. He advises that therefore, humility and conscientious endeavor should characterize its approach to knowledge. He upholds that the entire world consists of teachers for the wise and therefore, knowledge, conducive to health, longevity, fame and excellence, coming even from an unfamiliar source, should be received, assimilated and utilized with earnestness. With this philosophy of relentless reinvention ingrained, Ayurveda has rejuvenated itself, several times over during its 5000 year history, to keep-up with advances in human knowledge and abreast with changing social necessities, though never digressing from its core philosophies of Panchamahabhoota siddhanta and Tridosha vichar.

Yet another time has come, another dawn and another era, when humans fly to moon and strive to find the God particle, when genes are cut and pasted so that bacteria produce human hormones, when brain implants of silicon drive a car on the road, when the relevance of the time tested knowledge is again questioned, by a society blinded in the brightness of material science. Yet another time has come, for us to contemplate, reinvent and revitalize the Knowledge of Life. This time, it also needs to rejuvenate the environment, so that it can flourish again and bestow greater good for Life. It is a humongous task. From the congregation of intelligent minds and timeless wisdom at the 7th World Ayurveda Congress, we hope, shall evolve the nidus, for such a renaissance movement, which shall form a wave that sweeps and unifies the far corners of human knowledge and social intelligence and create yet another glorious age for Ayurveda and human health.

MINISTRY OF AYUSHGOVERNMENT OF INDIA

Founded in 2011, the World Ayurveda Foundation (WAF) is an initiative by Vijnana Bharati aimed at global propagation of Ayurveda. As part of a larger intellectual movement under the aegis of the Swadeshi Science Movement undertaken by Vijnana Bharati, WAF is a platform that would take Ayurveda to the world for all the benefits mankind can draw from traditional health sciences. The objectives of WAF reflect global scope. Propagation and encouragement of all activities – scientific and Ayurveda-related – are the core principles. Support to research, health-care programmes through camps, clinics and sanatoriums, documentation, organization of study groups, seminars, exhibitions and knowledge initiatives to popularize Ayurveda in the far corners of the world are the broad latitudes of focus at WAF. Ayurveda as a sector requires the kind of stewardship and voice that genuinely bring out the ethos of Ayurveda in matters that govern policy and planning with State and Central government administration in India and the world over. WAF is positioned to provide this much-needed leadership with its wide participation of various stakeholder groups. The impact of WAF encompasses the areas of policy, action, public health, trade, practice, science and, above all, global outreach for the benefit of society and mankind.

Vijnana Bharati or VIBHA is a national movement dedicated to the integrated development of Bharat through the intervention of science, engineering and technology. Launched in 1991 by a group of thinkers and scientists, VIBHA has, today, 29 active units and 6 overseas units. Eminent scientists, academicians, policy makers and social workers are the torch bearers of this movement.

VIBHA takes the spirit of ‘Swadeshi’ along with the ethos of our culture. It emphasizes that science and spirituality should go hand in hand. VIBHA works towards rural development, technology transfer, and social empowerment so as to bring the fruits of advancement of science and technology for the benefit of the society. It has received two national awards for popularizing science and technology: one in 2006 from Dr Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, and the other in 2007 from Mr Kapil Sibal, Hon’ble Minister for Science and Technology, Government of India.

VIBHA works towards national self-reliance and a developed India. Towards this mission, VIBHA adopts, adapts, and assimilates the best from everywhere and associates with the best of universities, R&D organizations and other movements.
