1. Provide each group of students with three different sizes of unopened cans (canned food works well).

2. Provide each group of students with rulers and/or metersticks and a blank data chart.

Instructions for Students

• Record all data on the chart provided.

• You may use the back of the chart or other blank paper to figure answers.

• Using the metric side of a ruler or a meterstick, in millimeters find the diameter and radius of one end of each can.

• Find the circumference and area of that same end of the can.

• Figure the surface area and volume of each can.

• Convert all answers from millimeters to centimeters.

Circumference = πd or π(2r) Area = πr² Surface area = 2(πr²) + 2(πr) · h Volume = πr² · h
