Name: Dave JonesJob: Director, CavernCity Tours

For most people August is atime to take a break and goon holiday. But Dave Jones is notmost people. For Dave, August meansInternational Beatles Week, thousands of tourists making apilgrimage to The Cavern, taking a trip on the MagicalMystery Tour and of course,co-organising the MathewStreet Music Festival. So it goes without saying thatDave, and his team, areconstantly working around theclock – 8 days a week youcould say – in preparation.Of course, they’re use toworking many a Hard DaysNight now!It is 20 years since Dave andbusiness partner Bill Hecklere-opened The Cavern and18 years since they set up whatis now Europe’s largest annual, free, city centre music festival.Just five years ago they also setthe wheels in motion for what isnow The Hard Days Nighthotel and along the way havebeen major players in helpingto turn The Beatles into a£600m a year industry forthe local economy.Dave, whose Beatlesconnection began whenworking at the council’s touristoffice in the 1980s, says henever tires of booking acts, dealing with Apple, arrangingtravel arrangements fromacross the globe and handlinginternational media inquiries. He added: “I feel privilegedthat we’re in this amazingposition to give somethingback to our city.“It’s very demanding, so muchso we’ll start planning for nextyear’s Beatles week andMathew Street Music Festivalimmediately after thisyear’s event finishes. But therewards are fabulous. Thefact we’re able to employabout 100 people gives usimmense satisfaction.”

A school traders market, set up by Land Securitiesand City Central BID, hasproved such a big hit, talkshave already begun tomake it an annual event.Liverpool’s Big Go and Growcampaign saw 10 schoolsgrow and sell their ownproduce in Williamson Square– with the winning schoolselling more than £200worth of fruit, veg andflowers in just over an hour!Pupils at Blessed Sacramentwon various prizes includinga school disco from Juice FM,with the Big Go and Growmarket attracting more than2,000 people to the square.

Having received gardeningequipment and seeds frombusinesses such as Rapidand Aldi, as well asprofessional mentoring insetting up an allotment intheir schools’ grounds, thechildren dressed for the daywith special aprons and hatsand Liverpool's street tradersoffered helpful support andadvice on how to sell goodsto the public.Lord Mayor of Liverpool,Councillor Frank Prendergast, also paid the children a visitto see the results of theirhard work and to presenta number of prizes fortheir efforts.

A very special prize wasawarded to Jasmine Robertsfrom Barlows RC primarywho thought about howtravelling by public transportcan help the environment bydesigning some greenthemed artwork. Her winningdesign will be adapted to fiton the back of an Arriva Busand will be seen travellingaround Merseyside.Ian Ward, centre director forSt Johns and Clayton Square, said: “The aim of thecampaign was to helpchildren learn about theenvironment and how to growtheir own fresh and tastyproduce. We were all veryimpressed with their effortsand the square lookedfabulous, so much sothat talks have alreadystarted about doing it againnext year.”

It’s often said, you don’t get asecond chance at making agood first impression. When it comes to Bernard Neary,it’s a good bet he’s never beenreminded of this saying. For exactly 20 years, this July,he’s been welcoming hundredsof people everyday with his warmsmile and friendly nature, firstwith Dillons and for the past 12years at Rapid.Indeed for many people he is theface of Rapid, ensuring they findwhat they’re looking for and whoto speak to.Considering ‘Bernie’ started outdrilling countless car panels atFords, his customer servicespeaks volumes for his naturalway with people.Carolyn Ford, Director of Sales atRapid, said: “Bernie is brilliant atdoing the little things, things thatlargely go unnoticed but go along way to making ourcustomers feel at home. I’m surethere’ll be countless peopledelighted to know he’s beenrecognised as City Central’sEmployee of the Month.”The 55-year-old from Anfield, said: “I’m very humbled. I enjoymy job, speaking to so manydifferent people every day. I wasbrought up that good mannersare important and if you smile atpeople they generally smile back.If that makes a difference to theirday, then I’m happy.”

The Mathew Street MusicFestival is due to takeplace in the next fewweeks, and I thoughtI would share a factabout The Cavern notgenerally known.Bob Wooler, its resident DJin the 1960s would greetthe audience with “Hi there, cave dwellers!”The audience and Bob werenot aware that The Cavernhad a secret that wouldremain hidden until the1980s – and still remainsunexplained today.During the excavation ofThe Cavern site in 1982,

a shaft was discovered andon looking down, thebuilders could see water atthe bottom.

In due course the siteagent and the architectdecided to take torches anda rubber dingy andinvestigate further.

Much to everyone’samazement they came backwith the information thatthe shaft opened up into acellar, 36.57 meters long by21.33 meters wide filledwith water 2.43 metersdeep and was man made; acave under a cave youcould say.

To this day nobody hasgiven a satisfactoryexplanation for whom, whyor what the cellar wasmade or used for or howthe water got there. There could be a hint inGore’s Liverpool Directoryfor 1766.Mathew Street was thenknown as Pluckington’sAlley and the directoryreveals that at various timesthere has been a TallowChandler and Soap Boiler,Sugar Bakers and after the1850’s, fruit warehouses. The cellar could have beenas a form of cold storage for

fruit such as apples.Of course the appleconnection would come fullcircle over a century latercourtesy of four young ladswho would shake the world.

To compensate for thenot so great BritishSummer, Urban Calm atMetquarter kindlyprovide tips for theperfect safe tan!

ExfoliateWe’re sure you’ve heard thisone many times before, butwe can’t stress enough justhow important it is to gentlyscrub skin before you tan, to

lift all those dead skin cellsand reveal revitalised, ready-to-tan skin beneath.MoisturiseWrists, elbows, ankles, kneesand feet – any areas that canget dry and need extramoisture as these areas cango darker than the rest andcan be quite unsightly.Latex gloves/Applicator mittThe tell-tale sign you’ve beencheating is so often theorange-tinted palms which, unless you want to don glovesin summer, are impossible to

hide. To avoid that beaconglow and grubby fingernails, get into the habit of applyingtan wearing latex gloves.Wear loose, dark clothingafterwardsSelf-tan RemoverIf it all goes horribly wrongand you are left with distinctlyorange palms, don’t panic, there is a solution available inmost shops.Moisturise to maintainTo keep the tan lookingglowing, keep it moisturisedand hydrated.
