7 Reasons to study Etymology ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reason # 1Etymology tells you about the origin of the words. Latin and Greek form the basis of almost 80% of all English words. So if you learn/understand etymology, you can develop an understanding of almost 80% English words. You get a deeper understanding of the meaning of the word, and not only this etymology makes it easier for you to learn new words. Reason # 2Etymology helps you explain things lucidly. If you know long words you can explain everything more clearly. Most of the times a long word is a short way to explain an otherwise too lengthy concept. What would be easier for you, to write the process of photosynthesis or just write photosynthesis?Long words are transparent, and therefore allows you to be lucid. Reason # 3Etymology makes you intelligent. You first understand the logic of the word formed and then you understand how it is associated with the things you already know. And as per the Neuropsychology, the more the associations the easier it is to commit it to your long term memory. And do not be worried if, at time, you sound a bit Shakespearean. Reason # 4Etymology is really very-very-very interesting No exaggeration!!!You know about the origin of a word, the story behind its formation, how was it used, and how is it used, what was it meant earlier and what does it mean now. The word has three parts prefix, root, suffix. The prefix and suffix gives the direction to the meaning of the root. And ROOT is that part of the word that CONTAINS the ORIGINAL MEANING which never changes. It not only feeds you curiosity but it also makes the exercise of vocabulary building intellectually engaging. And because you get to know a lot of stories, you increase your vocabulary PAINLESSLY. Reason # 5Etymology allows you to express succinctly. If you are able to explain a concept using the fewest words possible without being confusing, you will be considered an expert. Understand that you are living in a world where people are interested only and only in reading headlines to understand everything. Reason # 6Etymology is according to the basic principle of learning. If you want to learn something new, you have to associate it with something you already know. You will learn more words, if you learn more ABOUT WORDS. Reason # 7Etymology is the best memory aid. As far as learning new words is concerned, you can boost your vocabulary by leaps and bounds. By etymology you can learn and understand an entire set of words IMMEDIATELY. And not only this, you can break the words into its componets, analyze those components, and even can CORRECTLY make out the meaning even if you are seeing the word for the first time in your life. How much time should you spend every day?

Well. This depends on your present level of vocabulary and what level you want to achieve. 20 minutes a day should be sufficient to increase your vocabulary constantly. There is one thing which I want to tell you, and that is, DO NOT try to learn the words. RELAX. Just go through the list of the words I have selected. Come to it some other time, and read the entire list again, and gradually it will sink into your subconscious.DO NOT read more than one lesson in one go.
