7 October 2015 Dear Parents and Carers Thanks to all parents who came into school for the consultation meetings this week. Over 60 people came to the meeting on Monday night. Feedback from all the meetings was overwhelmingly positive and we want to hear your views on any aspect of the school please don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to raise any issues. Our next consultation meetings will take place on Tuesday 7 June 2016 at 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm, and you will be reminded nearer the time. Please would you remind your sons about the importance of riding their bicycles safely on the way to and from school, being courteous to pedestrians and other road users. SHOW MY HOMEWORK (SMHW) All pupils and all parents should have their own individual login for SMHW so they can both access and monitor homework set. If you do not have one please contact me and I will issue you with a pin number to set your own details. There have been a number of issues with some pupils or parents not being able to access the correct homework for their classes, particularly Year 8 pupils. If this is the case can you please let your son’s form tutor know so they can pass names through to me as a whole form list to give me an overall picture. I have been in contact with SMHW for a number of boys who have already seen me and there appeared to have been an issue transferring the details across from their classes at their end. They are checking the whole school data transfer for me. However, all form tutors have shown the pupils how to access the homework via the main school calendar in the interim. To hire a locker visit https://locker.rentals/ and select Birkdale High School and follow the instructions. SPORTS REPORT

Year 9 Rugby The Year 9 Rugby team travelled to Ripley St Thomas School, Lancaster in the Lancashire Cup last Thursday. In what was due to be a close contest, the Birkdale players raised their game to a level that Ripley couldn't cope with. The forwards dominated at the break down with exceptional performances from Sol Palmer, Elliot Berisha and Alfie Mutch and the backs provided the attacking flare with tremendous skills from Matthew Cook. Sam Roberts' kicking was perfect with a 100% conversion rate. The game had to be stopped with 15 minutes remaining as the score reached Birkdale 54 - Ripley 7. The Year 9 team now go onto the next round where they play St Peters, Orrell which is due to be played before 1 December. Mr Thorne

Year 10 Rugby The Year 10 Rugby team are back in action tomorrow away against Bolton School in the Natwest National Cup Round 3 with the winners playing away to Merchant Taylor's. The kick off at Bolton is 2.30 pm. Mr Thorne

Year 7 Rugby The Year 7 Rugby team have played 2 friendly fixtures in the past 5 days versus Kirkham Grammar School, Lancaster and Cowley from St Helens. Injuries and illness have had their say in team selection, with 5 players being unavailable over the 2 fixtures, this giving an opportunity to new blood in the form of Mackenzie Morgan, Robinson Rafferty, Tom Selby, Owen McKenzie and Jensen Worsley, all of whom should be proud of their contribution.

The game at Kirkham was very much a training game, played over 3, 15 minute periods, with Kirkham using 2 full teams. This was some of the boys’ first experience of 15 man Rugby, and this inexperience showed at times. Kirkham scored the first and only try of the 1st period, frustratingly due to a poor defensive line discipline and tackling technique, even from more experienced players. The 2nd period showed a much improved performance as the boys spirit and teamwork began to show through, with no points scored by either team. At the start of the 3rd period Kirkham introduced a raft of fresh players, and unsurprisingly as tiredness showed in Birkdale, Kirkham ran in 3 tries on the outside late on to secure the win.

A much improved performance followed at Cowley, despite the rain making conditions difficult, with team Stalwarts Alfie Monaghan and George Brain returning and immediately making their presence felt, tackling ferociously and rucking well. It was only to be expected in a Rugby League homeland that Cowley’s defence would be ferocious and

it was, but as the game went on Birkdale began to win the physical battle, with Ethan Henshaw, and Mackenzie Price starting to show what they can do when committed. Ethan made many tackles and was complemented well by Mackenzie’s ferocious rucking. Jack Dawson did not look out of place in the second row, gaining in confidence as the game progressed. James “Jimbo” Britton was back to his tackling best supported ably by Leon “wrecking ball”

Elliot.

A solid performance came from Benedict Summers-Boyce in his first game at fly half, with equally solid performances coming from Jake Lowther, Mathew Hogan, Fraser Cooke and again Mathew Johnstone. Keenan Parr had a great game under extremely difficult circumstances at scrum half, the result of a very liberal interpretation of the offside law. It was therefore fitting that Keenan scored the game’s first try, with a clever pick up from the ruck diving over under the posts to score, two points being added by George Brain - 0-7. Cowley struck back shortly afterwards with an unconverted try, due to poor line discipline in defence by Birkdale - 5-7 at half time. The game entered a frustrating period, with Fraser Cooke dubiously disallowed a try next to the posts for a knock on. This vein continued when the referee gave the game’s only off-side, as Benedict Summers-Boyce placed a neat kick over Cowley’s defence which Jake Lowther raced onto, looking sure to score. Unfortunately as he came into the referee’s line of vision for the first time in the move, he was adjudged offside. Frustration grew in the boys which led to another lapse in defensive discipline, with a static Birkdale line guaranteeing the breakthrough that led to Cowley’s

2nd try - 10-7. Birkdale, however, came back dominating the game but unfortunately frustrated in the end by factors both within and outside their control. I would encourage all the team to view online rugby matches, drills general information, player positions etc as part of their rugby education. Mr Boyce

Year 9 Football Congratulations to the boys in the Year 9 Football team for continuing on their unbeaten streak yesterday. They faced St. Damien’s High School from Manchester in the second round of the English Schools Cup Competition and performed brilliantly to progress to Round 3. Prior to the match, I was informed by the visiting teacher that the opposition were town league and cup champions in their area last year and that they had won all sixteen of their matches played throughout the season. I knew that our boys would need to produce another strong performance and they did just that, ultimately winning what was a very physically competitive game 5-0! They have now scored an awesome twenty seven goals in just five matches played this season and conceded only one! Kyle Joseph, who was recently selected to represent the Sefton Schoolboys’ Team along with Kev Connell, is currently number one goal scorer with a massive total of thirteen. The boys involved in this emphatic victory were Kyle Joseph, Kev Connell, George Carrington, Owen Highton, Matthew Cook, Seb Mikolajewski, Callum Lee, Brion Monaghan, Al Faiaz De Sousa, Ayomide Ayodele, Nijarden Thevanandan, Connor Wheeler, Matthew Howarth, Dylan Curry, Max Hayward, James O’Keefe and Callum Rigby. Very well done boys! Keep it up! Mr Quirk

Year 10 Football A mixed start to the new season for the Year 10 Football team. Under a new manager in Mr Ascough, a new captain in Liam Keefe and 2 new pupils to the squad, the team has taken its time to gel but the signs are encouraging. A 6-0 home defeat against Christ the King was followed by a 3-0 away loss to Stanley High. Both games were 2-0 at half time and in both games we had chances to make it 2-1 but once we conceded the 3rd goal in both games some lads’ heads dropped. However, in the cup away to Holy Family in Crosby, the boys put in a magnificent second half display to progress to the next round of the cup. Trailing 3-1 with 20 minutes left the boys never gave up and ended up winning 5-3! Rustam Stepans was outstanding, scoring 2 and was a constant threat throughout. Luke Sumner, Jake Graham and Tom Linnaker were the other scorers. Special mention to Jack Blundell and Callum Thornton who have been outstanding so far. Let’s hope the winning run continues tonight in another cup match at home to

Cardinal Heenan. Mr Ascough
